So I got really impatient and bought a 6+ from ebay, advertised on the listing as being new. The seller is obviously not just an individual (they have a company site and email address) and have 100% positive feedback.

The phone got here today. Box and accessories look brand new, and the phone looks new, with the exception of a scuff/scrape on the top left corner.

I emailed the seller and they responded quickly, were very apologetic and assured me that the phone was indeed new, only taken out of the box to activate it and remove the sim. They said it was possible that the phone came from Apple like that and they just didn't notice (and I've seen several threads on here about that very issue, so it is at least plausible).

They offered either a full refund with return shipping paid, or a $50 refund if I'm willing to deal with the scrape.

It seems to work perfectly fine, has a perfect screen, no bend (hah), etc... But it does have a really loud vibrate motor that I'm worried was caused by whatever caused the scrape (which could have been a drop), but again, that seems to be a hit-and miss issue currently plaguing iPhone 6+es, so it could have just been luck of the draw with that one.

Just looking for input from y'all. I think I'm ok with the scrape but I'm worried about warranty issues down the line - though maybe that worry is unfounded.

What do you guys think?

I don't know what you paid for this, but a $50 refund to deal with it seems like an insult. Have some patience and return it for a full refund, and leave feedback.

Also, how long has this seller been on eBay, and how many feedback ratings do they have? I've seen plenty of eBay sellers with 100%, but the reviews look like bogus. Best way to know if a seller is legit is if they've got over 100 ratings, and have been selling on eBay for at least a few years (2+). Not saying I wouldn't buy from someone with less (you have to start somewhere), but for bigger purchases like this it's much safer.

Return it! Follow your instincts. How much was the savings had you bought it from Apple?

true..but going through all that process....yeah.....

Some people would rather go through that process than wait, and it's a perfectly reasonable choice. Ultimately, the OP is out time, but not money. And if the seller had truly sold him a new phone, he'd have the phone in hand before many people did who've been waiting for Apple or their carrier to get more stock.

That phone is not new. Big pet peeve of mine is sellers who say its "brand new, but I opened the box to check if it works". No people, when you break that seal it's used, period.

Return that phone, have the seller foot the shipping, and leave him a negative feedback.

I absolutely HATE sellers who do that. eBay, craigslist, Swappa, whatever.

If I open the box to take my sim out but leave the stickers on and never turn the phone on, that makes it used?!. Maybe not brand new but definitely new.

When you open a cereal box to yank the toy out, does that make it new? I mean, you didn't eat the cereal.

"open box never used" would be fair, but selling an opened box as new is a no-go.

Try to get a full refund or at the very least try to get a few hundred back if you'd be happier accepting a discount on the phone.

I wouldn't accept a phone in such a condition and the seller should feel bad for lying about the condition.

I can't see how they would miss that!! I sell stuff every now and then on eBay and one thing I make sure I always do is inspect the item for any visible marks/scratches and make sure I am as transparent as possible on the listing.

Return it.

I would give them the benefit of doubt especially since they apologized, but I would still get a refund.

Alright, I just emailed the seller and told them I'd like a refund. I've never had to do this on ebay before, anyone know how this works? I'm just curious how it'll be set up so that neither of us are really at risk (i.e do I send the item and they refund when it arrives? Do I get a refund and send the item when that happens?). Seems like they should assume the risk since I'm the buyer...

Make sure you send it back with a tracking number and signature confirmation. If you paid via PayPal (assuming you did), you would basically just be dealing with them. You would have to open a case (I believe) and document the tracking number within the open case. Once PayPal sees that the phone has been returned to the seller (and the seller confirms they received the phone), they should refund your money.

I'm not sure how the return process works with eBay. You might be able to print a label from within eBay ... just make sure you add signature confirmation. Anything valued over $250 needs to have signature confirmation in order to be covered under eBay protection.

Also on a side note, if the seller is offering you a hassle free return I don't think negative (or even neutral) feedback is in order. Personally, in this case, I just wouldn't leave any.

Bs.

I take my SIM card out so it doesn't activate over my line. Most of the time it's just something that's NECESSARY depending on how the phone is bought. This is standard, and buyers are used to it.

Yup, agreed. I wasn't planning on leaving any feedback, negative of positive.

Yeah, I was actually expecting it to be opened with the sim removed. If someone bought it on an upgrade, wouldn't the phone have to be activated before they could resell it? I was perfectly fine with the phone being opened, just wasn't expecting a big gash on the side. ಠ_ಠ
