OMG who the hell is Apple to want to make money.

If you don't want to pay #20 then don't and leave it at that.

Is Apple forcing you to pay the money?

Why should we leave it? We have been disappointed when those apps were not included when iPod touch was released. Apple did not explain why. Jobs lied about "unable to edit calendar event" is a "bug" when you can simply edit plist to enable it. People are so forgetful.

Why are customers mad at other customers when some customers are ripped off? How about next time when you are ripped off nobody wants to support you?

Ok let me say this this was a ipod at first with the same os as the iphone but it was intended to be a IPOD second the webrowser and itunes store. now the only way we found out out about the email being on there and was hacking and stealing the iphone's rep source. which if im not mistaking modifying software like this is Against Apples ELUA so the only way steve i belived did this was to stop hacking on the ipod.

I'm sorry, but I honestly fail to see where you or anyone else, for that matter, have been 'ripped off'.

Firstly, when you bought the iPod touch, you bought it with it's current functionality. Granted the in-ability to create events in the calendar application only came to light a few weeks after it was released, so ok, Apple made you buy under the impression you were going to recieve that, and if you wanted to take that further, you should have done so, at the time, with Apple.

Secondly, Apple are now 'giving' software away to new iPod touch users. Ok - big deal? - I'll re-iterrate my last point. You bought iPod touch with the stated functionality, for a stated price. If you expected anything more, you were foolish. Apple are not under any obligation to provide you or anyone else with regular software updates. They saw the product as fit for shipment, so they could of left you with all the previous bugs, which luckily, thanks to Apple, have now been fixed. Now the paid update - Ok, so how long did you expect to recieve free updates to your device for FREE (1.1.1 & 1.1.2), which continue to add minor and useful functions?

You can't expect that. No-one can. The people who go out and buy iPod touch from now on, yes they'll get the software free, why? - because they are buying the current iPod touch, and the current stated price, with the current stated functionality, as we did. Did Apple charge us for the software? - No, why should they charge new users? - Exactly.

No-one has been ripped off here. Actually, if anything is happening here, it's that people are showing they are not prepared to put forward ANY amount or currency towards the software Apple develops? - Why? - Why shouldn't Apple's software engineers get paid for whats likely plenty of man hours (originally - before the iPhone) to create, code, and bring this software to the touch platform, be paid for their work? How about your boss refusing you a pay packet next month? - fancy it? - I don't think so.

You want to pay for it, willingly, happily, faithfully, doesn't mean other people are not ripped off. Period.
How about people paying $3000+ for a SONY laptop are ripped off?

Then why did you buy it if you were disappointed with what it had to offer?

Because there is jailbreak. And faith that Apple would change this. Now they changed it, for a price. Unbelievable.

Now charge for 12kb to modify the plist whatever it is... Does safari seem snappier?

Only Apple is capable to elevate me to heaven and break my heart once in a while. But... isn't that love anyway?

Where does this iPhone users are superior than iPod touch users because you pay subscription fee come from? How ridiculous.

I'm not an accountant, and don't know a lot about the subject, but I'm virtually certain a "subscription based accounting" method has little to do with whether the customer pays a monthly subscription fee (re: :apple:tv).

Compare that with the results of the Engadget poll:

Those opting for the upgrade: 6,908

Those annoyed by the charge and/or sticking with jailbreak: 24,169

http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/15/poll-are-you-spending-20-on-new-ipod-touch-apps/

Think what you will about Engadget, but that's a pretty clear message to Apple.

Well, the number opting for the upgrade is up to 7,099 or 18.9% of people responding to the poll. Carry that percentage over to the 500,000 or so iPt owners and you get around 94,500 who pay the $20, which nets Apple $1.89 million. The "clear message" is they made nearly 2 million bucks to add to the Cupertino coffers vs. nothing if they had just given the apps away.

Don't give them your money. Not for the apps, not for their songs, not for their TV, or movies or anything. Find other places to get what you want. It's the only way to get them to treat their customers with any sort of respect.

Screw Apple. I'm done with them.

You and your money won't be missed.

True, if Engadget was fully indicative of the iPt ownership... I'd bet the majority of iPt owners (the kind that don't browse gadget sites, don't know what "Macworld" is, bought a touch because it sounded/looked cool etc) would just see a $ sign and ignore the update.

I could make the counterargument that the majority of iPt owners aren't the type of never-satisfied geeks that would visit a gadget site like Engadget to whine about Apple's decision by voting in an online poll, have never heard the term "jailbreak" and associated it with an electronic device, and would be more likely to hear about the upgrade path through more mainstream media and think "Gee whiz, I can get new features for my iPod for $20? Where do I click?" So the percentage of owners who actually pay for the apps pack might in fact be considerably higher than 20%.

Make that 7,910. Great $20 spent with my iTunes gift card I got for my birthday. Happy and not bitching.:D

Well... that in part could be down to you not actually buying it. Had you not received a gift card would you still gone ahead and ponied up? I have other things to spend $20 of "real" money on, but if I was given some "Apple money" I would probably have no issue with the price either, if I really wanted the apps.

Yeah, now all we need to know is what percentage of owners read engadget. Or what percent of the owners care enough to come online and complain. Or what percent of the owners thought that $20 was fair and didn't need to join a forum to bitch about it. Most people that did the upgrade won't come online to participate in polls that trash the price tag.
