This is inaccurate, and I think you know that. 50M subscribers aren't watching "garbage" and aren't all 11 years old.

We heard from Disney in February that only 20% of their subscribers are the Verizon variety, far fewer than many "analysts" thought.

So not half...not even a quarter.
Yes if anything non Disney can have garbage. I could pick absolutely anything on Disney at random and know it will be clean.

Hot Take: We have a 12 year old, even when she was 11 (when D+ started), she had zero interest, she hasn't been into anything "directly" Disney related since she was like 6 or 7 :D (and only has passing interest in Marvel, and a few select Pixar films, that I have usually purchased anyway, so need for a channel for the same content ...)

Did a free stint, Mandalorian was fine, but there's so much compelling content on other services (not including Apple ...), that has way more appeal to me and my wife.

Concur. The content isn't very attractive now as I need more than Marvel, Star Wars and Cartoons. I believe people will leave in droves over the next 2 years.

It's like comparing Nice Fresh Sweet Apples and dirty stinking rotten apples that drop the F bomb ever 30 seconds.
I was sorely disappointed with Apple's content being so R rated. It's odd how the "best story tellers in the business" can't convey an emotion without some of the worst foul language on TV.

I'm out.
Finally someone else gets the point! I can pick anything at random from Disney+ and know it will be clean.

Disney is a monster.

For perspective, Netflix took 15 years to get 57M subscribers. Disney+ launched November 12. Of course, Netflix was a different model at the time, but this is utterly impressive from Disney.

Different times cause different adoption rates. Most people 15 years ago didn't have high enough bandwidth internet to pipe HQ streaming tv nor did the tech allow for HQ anything. It was in 2007 that Netflix started it's streaming, before that it was DVD.

Maybe I'm just not very astute when it comes to the definition of good programming, but from my perspective Apple TV + has some excellent original programming. For All Mankind, Morning Show and Mythic Quest are all outstanding. When I hear people make comments that ATV+ has nothing worthy to watch, I begin to wonder if they actually sat down and watched any of it.

Solid streaming service with A+ quality content. Apple TV+ isn't even worth comparison at this point.
I don't think Apple are really going to be a big deal in the streaming industry going forward.
They would have bought Disney if they had plans to dominate.

It doesn't help that AppleTV+ offerings are mostly awful.

Also, content providers creating original stuff are effectively hampered right now. Disney can keep adding older, back catalogue content as it sees fit. Apple don't have that option, unless they start buying up films and shows they don't currently own.

Mythic Quest (88% RT/85% audience), For All Mankind (73% RT/87% audience), Morning Show (61% RT/93% audience), The Banker (76% RT/100% audience)...mostly awful? These shows are rated on par with some of the standard bearers when it comes to quality programming. Heck Ozark is 81% RT/92% audience. I'm on my second run thru Mythic Quest and love it. The production quality, the acting and the story are all excellent. If anyone loved Silicon Valley I would think would find Mythic Quest a hoot.

To characterize AT+ programming as awful is just plain lying.

Totally. That’s why I mentioned a different time. It’s still impressive.

Disney has the biggest, most long-lasting franchises out there, with life-long fans that generate more life-long fans.

Warner should have done the same and put the Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Matrix, and DC franchises under a single service, and create exclusive content for it.

Right now I have Netflix (largest amount and variety of content), and Disney+ (life-long fan). I cancelled Prime and Hulu; don't have time for all the content. All other services are short-term only.

AppleTV is not even on my radar; they have NOTHING I want.

Adult-friendly scripted original programming on Disney+ is slim picking at the moment -- The Mandalorian and Clone Wars.

For now, Disney+ relies heavily on childhood nostalgia (series you watched while growing up) and back film catalog from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars.

If you like Star Wars and Marvel, that will start to change as Marvel originals ("phase 4") hit Disney+ this year, starting with The Falcon and the Winter Soldiers in August and WandaVision in December. 2nd season of The Mandalorian is slotted in between, on October.

And from next year, expect 4 adult-friendly scripted originals to launch each year, such as Monsters at Work (Pixar) and Loki (Marvel), What if...? (Marvel), and Hawkeye (Marvel). Another Star Wars original will launch in 2022, with more in the works.
They don’t rely on childhood nostalgia.
They provide content for kids.
My two youngsters watch something on Disney+ every day.
Movies, preschool shows, 101 Dalmatian street, old Disney shorts. The thing about selling to kids... there will always be a new kid for each one that ages out.

Warners is doing that. This fall I believe is the timeline.

Disney may have something to celebrate, but there is still zero talk of when these annoying bugs are gonna be fixed..

Funny how they keep quiet on that. When it helps them out, they'll respond quick enough, but when it helps customers out.. you just burn.

I don't think Disney's increase in subscriber numbers will be sustainable considering their narrow focus of content compared to Netflix (mainly kids, Star Wars, Marvel originals). I'm sure families with kids appreciate the content, but there doesn't seem to be a big appeal outside that demographic.
I just got Disney+ today, went through the entire list of TV shows and movies and added content to my watchlist - I have enough to last a month at most, and most of that is for nostalgia reasons.
Netflix offers a hugely diverse range of content, and if you go digging past all the big-hype stuff there's a lot of hidden gems to discover!
I haven't tried AppleTV+, I don't need another streaming service, don't have the time to watch all of my watchlist content on my current services!

Apple will surpass Disney in paid subscribers in 2-3 years.

That is not going to happen unless Apple buys another company. Even without the pandemic delaying film shooting, they can’t create enough original content to match Disney’s current content new and old.

My wife and I just started our free Apple TV+ subscription with her new iPad Air. She signs on and scrolled through the app and her initial response was “that’s it?”

Narrow ? I just canceled my Netflix subscription because i didn't like the content much. In fact if i had to choose between the two, Disney gets my vote.. While Netflix may seem to get movies/tv shows quicker as buisness relationship with content holders, to me, that same closer/quicker is a double standard, they also remove stuff quicker as well..

Yes, Disney+ doesn't have horror, thriller, or adult action movies or comedies - and never will. Disney is pitched at families not adults.
Once everyone has watched the big movies and tv shows, there will be little left to watch for adults.
Most of my favourite shows and movies over the last few years will never be available on Disney+, even though Disney owns some of them.

Netflix has very limited great content, some good content, and mostly garbage.

Disney has extremely high quality content and will get more originals over time. No one competes with Disney’s content.
