It was to be expected.

Many companies use the strategy of initially pricing for a loss in order to get a good customer base and then slowly raising the prices to the levels needed to be to make money.

Data caps (like the recent nationwide xfinity one) will hurt people more than the yearly $1 increase for a service.

Expected, but this is frankly still a bargain at twice the price if you like what they offer. There is a ton there, especially with the bundle.

They will lose customers, they mainly have old content barring about two new shows, this may be good for young children but the parents paying for it may be a different matter. It's getting to the stage with all these subscription services that people subscribe and cancel after binge watching a particular show they want to watch, if prices were kept at a reasonable rate subscribers would not think oh, can i afford all these services this month, the world has gone subscription mad and I think so many of us have subscription fatigue now.

You might want to check out all of their programming announcements from their investors day yesterday.

Also, their subscription costs include 4k streaming, which is $17.99 on Netflix. When it comes to value, I don't think it can be beat right now.

Anyone who didn’t see this coming is crazy. I’d be shocked if they aren’t losing money on it even at $8/month. This is the phase where they get as many subscribers as possible, even if it means losing money due to the cost of content.

3-5 years from now they’ll be as much (or probably more) than Netflix per month.

86.8 million subscribers? To be fair, Apple TV+ probably has half that number.

The .8 million half.
Half? Not paid, no. Apple TV+ has about 8 paid subscribers, which is how Apple wants it. Lets them mislead the shareholders on its success as long as its free.

Want to increase revenue by 90 million dollars per month? Ok, we just increase this thing by $1. Hardly anyone will blink, we'll rake in more money than most people can conceive of.

There we go, that didn’t take long.

Give it a few years and their price will be right around where Netflix is.

Thanks, that reminded me about canceling for next year.

Disney+$1

There is literary no reason for the price raise. Their distribution costs haven't gone up, they have incredible subscriber numbers and let's be honest ... how many times is anyone going to watch classic disney movies or specials or Avatar - again??

Honestly Mandalorian is the ONLY reason I'm paying for it. This weekend I'll be caught up and then end of 2020 I'll disconnect.

This is getting too much like Cable TV was with all our subscriptions.

^ LMAO ... (Robocop) ... not sure if the joke fits right here though ... but nicely done!

Depends on how you look at it. If you are just taking into account the subscription fees, then you are likely right. Though, when you look at the money made from selling retail products, licensing fees, new customers coming to your parks (whenever they reopen), etc. Then they are still in the green.

You’re kidding right? Them milking an IP which has been milked enough is considered a good thing?

Let Star Wars die man.

I could not be less kidding.

I love Star Wars, and for me there’s no separation of good and bad. To me, it’s all good - not just because it’s Star Wars, but because I seem to be able to find value of varying kinds in all the different aspects.

Of course, some of it is more perfect than others, but no amount of others hating Star Wars because it’s fashionable is going to sway me into whatever herd mentality is en vogue.

Same with Apple. I knew a good thing when I discovered them in the 90s and their computers were still beige. Slating Apple was widespread, and nearly everyone was a doom-monger.

The idea that Disney are milking Star Wars could be true. But I don’t believe that to be the case right now. It’s all about story, and there’s a galaxy of stories still waiting to be told. Throw in a chronology than can be explored in two directions (or a known period that can be peered at more closely) and with the right storytellers the possibilities are extensive.

If Disney were making cheaply produced, unsatisfying, low-quality content and sticking the Star Wars brand on it, my opinion would be different. But they’re not, so I’m actually happy to pay for Disney+ (and even a fair price rise) if it helps maintain that level of crafting.

Wonderful. I was going to cancel anyway after this season of The Mandalorian. Outsude of that I never watch Disney+. If I didn’t already own all Star Wars films and the Marvel movies I care about maybe that would be a different story but it’s not. If they put out another series worth watching I’ll subscribe for a month after it’s out and binge watch.

Still really cheap compared to Netflix. I'm happy with this price increase.
That's because Disney's content is hilariously anemic compared to Netflix. If they tried to charge what Netflix does, they'd get laughed off the Internet along with Quibi.

I've already bounced. Season 2 of The Mandelorean isn't compelling enough to even go month to month and their road map isn't intriguing at all. my one year subscription was enough to let me know that Disney+ just wasn't for me when I really thought it would be.

This doesn't surprise me. When I saw what the price was going to be at launch I was shocked. After all they announced yesterday in terms of content being made for the service, this price increase is justified.

On the other hand, I signed up for Disney+ on a 3 year deal at 30% off the launch price. This won't be painful for two more years for me.

Wonder what Verizon does for their plans that include the bundle. Hopefully no change.
This was exactly my thought. That's the only reason why we have Disney+. I don't see Verizon eating this tho... ... Though, is it worth it for them to re-do something just to grab $1/mo more? lol.

I'm going to guess it won't change until next year sometime.

Quality vs quantity

I guess if I had nothing to do maybe Netflix and the quantity of shows they have might tempt me. Unfortunately or fortunately I don’t have time to waste on another Adam Sandler movie.

Still a very attractive price. I wish they charge a little more at launch instead of having price hike. They still have lots of countries not launched yet.

Edit: Look at all these comment about cancelling ! Reminds me when Disney+ launched majority of MR comment said no one will subscribe it.
