Quite amusing reading all the kids saying this will "replace Netflix". Netflix has an extensive array of original foreign-language TV shows, German, Japanese..etc. A German show like DARK is better than 99.9% of all Disney content. That is what makes Netflix unique, is that many of their originals are actually original and thought provoking. Not everything is chest-bumping superhero rubbish.

Who knew there were so many Disney fanboys on MacRumors?!?

This is true of all the current pay streaming services outside of possibly the big 4 premium movie channels. The financial news indicates that they are all losing money and you know that isn’t going to continue. Going to be interesting to see which ones are still here by the end of next year.

I’ve been doing all kinds of spreadsheets and such to see how to cut the cord and keep the shows I want to watch available and save money. So far the only way to cut the cost significantly is to rationalize away some shows.

Same here. Im in the UK and have Sky TV that costs me £37. the channels I can get in a different package from Sky can be £8 but loose the facility to record. But that doesn't matter due to all the channel catch up apps.
Just got a 4K tv so upgraded my Netflix sub to match and after I've watched Stranger Things and Mindhunter I'll cancel that for 9 months (I read that if you cancel and then return within 10 months you don't loose your watchlist).
I have Prime and they seem to be adding more 80-90s movies then Netflix and that's what I like. Plus Man in the High Castle.

Never going to happen. Netflix is a juggernaught now. But in any case, competition is good and Disney has started off at what looks like a competitive price that lots of Netflix subscribers might subscribe to both.

Never going to happen? Netflix is choking on debt. They are already struggling to attract sufficient subscribers to keep the finance people happy. It’s all about the money and it doesn’t look good for a viable future for Netflix once a truly viable competitor arrives and that is exactly what Disney+ represents.

Obviously Netflix is in deeper trouble than Apple, but still, the money spent on this could’ve been spent on things that will push Apple into a better ecosystem, eg. Spend it on iCloud. Apple could’ve made a real Office 365 killer, and they were showing the potential (remember iWorks on iCloud?). But poof, they are trying to become content creator instead, competing with the likes of Disney. Plus, these content services will not be available in all markets anyway. So it’s like Apple pandering only to the US/western market. An improvement on iCloud on the other hand can be enjoyed by everyone globally.

Well, doesn't Netflix make better deals than Apple in some cases as well? That too, plays a part. That's what they told me in a Live chat session once... So, i kinda believe it to be true.

Whatever it is, only those in few western market (ie. US) that can enjoy Apple TV+ service, and how much money Apple has put in it? My point was, Apple could've used the same effort into iCloud, a service that will be enjoyed by all markets where Apple exists.

Let's face it, iCloud is decent, but it has been quite stagnant from the consumer point of view for a while, despite it being the backbone of all Apple devices today. But hey, let's spend the money on some TV shows to pander to the low-growth western markets.

Agree with you.
Netflix is suffering form the deep and if Disney will provide something for less you will see that everyone will switch to D+.
The main difference, as someone said, is that Disney doesn’t need to pay the royalties to anyone and it’s database of movie and tv series will always stays the same.
Netflix form it’s side will have to arrange new contracts every year and sometimes tv series and movies magically disappeared form its database.

Easy to solve

1. make an US iTunes Account
2. buy a digital Apple store gift card on Walmart.com
3. subscribe to the service through the Apple store
4. get smartdns
5. enjoy!
Forgive my utter ignorance, but I seem not to be able to pay at Walmart with Paypal, as it says the billing address is not in the USA.
How do you circumvent that?

About the Apple+ thingy, I don't know half of the shows or producers so with this alone will probably skip that.
Disney pricing seems okay, but would probably just watch oldies from there as newer stuff has been quite rubish.

There are too many of these hosting sites, customer wants just one with all content and we just get like million sites with original content bleh.
Give me one place where you search that shows every show or movie any year or genre and I buy it for subs

What what is enticing to me here is having operations like National Geographic and ESPN bundled into that package. If Disney can get me live sports shows that I want to watch and cool shows to stream, I’ll definitely cancel Netflix. I don’t think Netflix is in a great position here.

Too much streamings. Too many subscriptions. If only they could get all the content providers TOGETHER and offer them to consumers in one lump, at a discount, and maybe call it a…scrundle

I live in the UK and have a US account. I just bought a second Apple TV and have it set up on that. Don't need to use a DNS and get my giftcards from eBay

Important to remember it’s still pretty much Disney channel plus as it takes months or years to get some of these announced shows going.

There’s no reason to decide anything right now or even this year. I’m in no rush to sub to atv. Netflix might be doomed 5 years from now but at present they win my sub. That won’t change for awhile.

I somewhat agree. Don't quite get the excitement over Disney+. It seems they'll have mostly old stuff (that you either have already seen or no interest in) and a small amount of new original content initially. The trailer for The Mandalorian looks very promising though.

Clearly you don’t have children....

Get a Transferwise account. You get a USA bank account and card. There are other services too.

Again, the official UK Star Wars twitter account is saying early 2020, and exclusive to Disney+ for The Mandalorian.

Do you have a source for the claim about Sky? It’s something I suspected too, but all I’ve seen is speculation.

Either way, I think we absolutely can blame them, they signed any deals they made and chose when and how to to launch.

I frankly don’t care much about most of the old content (I own most of it already in one form or another) - I do care about not getting the new exclusive content though. Also Disney Life already exists, so that content can’t be all that exclusive to Sky, can it? Unless it was some weird contract for new exclusive content? The whole thing is weird.

Well, it's more me piecing things together and guessing dates... they signed the deal in 2015... a "multi-year" agreement.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance...ns-new-exclusive-rights-deal-with-Disney.html

Coupled with "the deal expires in 2020"...

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2...s-of-disney-content-as-it-leaves-the-ftse-100

And taking that back to the previously mentioned multi-year agreement, announced in October -- I just figured it was 5 years flat from then.

Netflix is dead for me once this comes out. I was furious a nonsense increase and losing good contents and adding useless Netflix originals. The only thing we gonna miss is Stranger Things which we can just buy a 1 month subscription to watch it. That’s all the money I can afford to give to Netflix from then. And plus the Hulu is a great combination as well.

That to me sounds like a positive for Netflix, except the voiceover bit; just use subtitles. Voiceovers only work for animated shows or films. It looks ridiculous to voice over film, not to mention arrogant.

So many great European films in particular. And they’re always the ones that stick with me compared to Hollywood where it’s all for money; colour and movement for the masses to swallow up and not have to think too hard.
Maybe I’ll give them another shot. The voiceover stuff just made the wording seem so cheesy and stupid. Made me not want to pay attention. What shows are good that you’ve found?

USA is not the center of the world :) There are lots of good movies not in english language.. good story line and entertaining plots.. for me Asian horrors are the best out there.
Name a few shows?

Good thing I’m not one of these idiots that spends $14 a week at McDonald’s. Oh wait, I forgot, we all gotta decide on what’s most important to us. Forgot :)

Good thing I can afford it. It may come as a shock to you but food costs money, whether you make it yourself or eat out. Maybe you still live at home and don’t know this.

call me when you get more content than super hero, star wars or kids stuff
No one is going to call you, even if that happened. But it won’t, because Disney doesn't care about obscure, indie, art house movies that get 20 views a month and such. Sadly, I might add.

Disney cares about what’s trendy and brings in millions monthly (sci-fi, fantasy, live-action comics, escapism, nostalgia cartoons). I bet you their staff psychologists and sociologists make a pretty penny...

Hoping for at least 5.1 DD+ if not Atmos on the technical front too. Disney Life, the Uk streaming service, has HD video (great) but only 2.0 DD sound, even for the newer films with existing multichannel mixes.

I saw in the demo of the app that there was a 5.1 logo next to the title of Captain Marvel. So I'm guessing that'll be what it has, but I would love Atmos as well.

people love to get away from their normal life and watch something exciting. Cant blame them for not liking normal people shows much nowadays.
Watch legion and tell me thats not an amazing show.
