I use the front facing camera so few times, I wouldn’t miss it if it were gone, or if it were under screen, even with the sketchy performance we’re seeing from other manufacturers who have implemented under screen cameras. When I see images of the hole punch camera, it’s always a bit off-putting. I’m sure, much like with the current notch, that your mind stops seeing the black hole when you’re focused on what is on the screen.

I spend far more time on my iPad Pro (vs my iPhone 12 Pro Max) that I’m used to having zero screen distractions, and I’m glad that the iPad has a consistent bezel to it, since when holding it, your fingers have to go somewhere on the face of the device. I definitely do prefer FaceID to TouchID, given how little interaction it requires, especially as we go into the winter months where TouchID and gloves / mittens was a total mess, so if Apple is going to be able to put the scanner / projector under the screen, that’s a great step ahead, imho.

Nothing 'bout iPhone 15? These leaks in advance to Apple presentation seem to be artfully created to diminish the impact of the 13 series. I won't be surprised if Prosser is a fictionary character played by Samsung.

iPad Air button style Touch ID would be plenty enough for me. I wouldn’t even mind top and bottom bezels.

I just don’t care enough to get into an argument about it though.

I don't mind the current notch, but that just looks dumb. The hole punch design does not look elegant at all and I'd rather it blend into the top portion of the phone, not to see a dot looking at you all the time.

Agree.
I think the hole punch design would bother me more then the notch....

I hope Apple don’t use a hole punch next year. That is beyond ugly. I’ve gotten so used to the notch since the X that I haven’t paid attention to it since 2017. If they do use the hole punch, I’ll be keeping my 12 for a few more years or upgrade to the 13 and keep that until Apple don’t a hole punch.

I seriously don’t see what all the bitching about the notch is all about…. I also don’t get the “flush camera” craze either. 99% of iPhone users put a case on their phone (at least the intelligent ones that value their investments do). I mean these are not really phones anymore, and more “personal” computers that can make phone calls. With a case, the protruding cameras are a total non-issue. “I hate the way my cameras protrude” is not something that is said from users with a case.

The notch is also not an issue that is frequently complained about anymore either. It is in-noticeable after a short time of getting an iPhone with the notch. What I sense is that most users are craving a way better battery and some sort of innovative feature. I mean once they throw a 120hz display in here, what else can really be done with the iPhone? We all know AR was only baked into the iPhone to test the waters for AR glasses really.

The future of the iPhone, I think, is to eventually be an iPad replacement. Throw a 360° hinge on a MacBook and make it touch-screen, and the iPad is dead. Figure out thermal management and put in Apple silicon that can run pro-applications like FCP, and you have another iPad killer. I think the only real innovation we can really expect going forward is much more advanced camera setups with computational photography/video pushing boundaries that “dumb” electronics eventually can’t.

Am I the only one that doesn’t care for hole punch designs? The notch may not be perfect but at least it looks intentional and you stop noticing it after a day. I just find hole punch designs look more like manufacturing mistakes and having so much display around them makes the black dot stand out even more.

I’ll deal with it when it inevitably comes but I don’t get the notch hate if this is the alternative.

. When the X was announced and shown with the notch, I didn’t hesitate at all to upgrade my 7+. Within minutes of using the X, I forgot about the notch and still haven’t noticed it after using the XS Max and 12 Pro Max. The hole punch is ugly and like you said it’ll be more noticeable having so much display on the sides. Especially with the Pro Max models and their big screens.

I'm of the belief that the front facing camera will have an AREA that is a "hole-punch" but there will be pixels covering it during non-camera/face-id situations, this would make it so you dont even know that its there when using the phone for anything other than unlocking or selfies depending on their ability to combine sensors into the same area. I'm certain Apple has a patent for this, and have been working on this setup for some time now. I'm not worried about the performance issues others have had with the quality of the sensors being under the screen, as Apple seems to dedicate tons of time and money to these "emerging" technologies and implementing them...maybe not all of them...(butterfly keyboard has entered the chat). Really hoping this iPhone 14 rumor is true, I love the minimal, industrial design of Apple, but the notch is terrible in every way and the only thing worse than it is the camera bump. Finally these design atrocities can be sacrificed to the gods of "Braun Design" 🙏 😇 🤘

With Ross also mentioning about FaceID in similar lines, I feel we will definitely be getting FaceID under the screen. This will be great. Hope it comes true.

Your opinion it is.
You have shown a strong bias towards whatever it is that Apple gives you, ridiculously so. I was in that boat myself the first 5 years or so that I owned iPhones, eventually that wears off for most people once they realize there’s nothing in it for them to treat corporations like sports teams.

I have extensively used and tested Apple’s notch versus a phone with a centered hole punch display. When I first purchased the phone I know I “liked” the hole punch screen due to how it looks, didn’t have any experience though so it was subjectively better to me. Now that I’ve used it for a lengthy time and tested it against the iPhone’s notch, in various ways, I can definitely say the hole punch is objectively better. I have no skin in this game, I just want the best product, I don’t care who makes it. The notch covers up a large part of the display where the status bar is in portrait mode, on a punch hole display you have something like 90% of your status bar available for use, whereas the iPhone is left with two small areas on either side of the notch. Most of the time in portrait mode it’s a non issue if you don’t care about having useful info in the status bar area. In landscape mode is where the notch really shows its inferiority, you have a big jarring chunk out of the side of the display covering parts of the content on the screen. There’s no way you can say this isn’t an issue or it’s not inferior to having a little punch hole.

I can tell who has actually used both systems because if you have actually used both, you’d know that these punch hole cameras are so small that they disappear in daily use, and a lot of the time can hardly be seen due to it blending into the dark background of the status bar area it resides in, especially if one uses a dark wallpaper. And I find it funny how people can make the claim that the notch disappears into the background, but that a little punch hole that’s like 10% the size “does not”, say what!

As time goes by I appreciate the hole punch display more and more, and the iPhones large notch seems more and more dated and inferior in every way. That’s my objective truth based on non-biased actual use. I’m not just throwing out opinions here with no knowledge to back them up.

I’m entitled to feel how I feel about the notch and hole punch. I don’t treat Apple like a sports team. I love their products and only upgrade when I love what they are launching. As I said before, the notch never bothered me so I don’t mind it being on the iPhone. As for the hole punch, I don’t like the look of it and not upgrading if Apple launch it.

good news is my iphone x still works flawlessly, no reason to buy an overpriced phone until 5g is more widely available

If we get a notch redesign for this year, even if it just becomes a bit smaller, no way will they redesign again for next year. I also have trouble seeing them adopting such a prominent design choice as the pimple from other brands.
Rumours are punch hole in 2022 and no hole at all in 2023….

I am in the group that will wait for the next finger print phone. I will not buy myself nor any family member a Face ID phone. I wonder how many of "us" are out here.

I actually miss the touchID on the back of my Android phone.

That was better than anything else I've used.

That said, I really don't care how I unlock my device for use.

What I hate is that damn notch. Ten months in and I still notice it EVERY TIME, unlike what most said in these forums.

If I could get an iPhone WITHOUT a front camera, or better yet, WITH a pop-up front camera, I would.

Bla bla bla, still subjective. Look it up. It doesn’t matter how long you spent forming your preference, it is still just that.

Oh, and by the way, I hate the notch, but I think the hole is worse. Your argument that I praise everything Apple makes is false. Objectively. I just choose to live with the faults, because I think Android is far, far worse. Subjectively.
