There’s no argument here, a tiny little almost invisible punch hole is worlds better than the giant notch, this isn’t opinion. The fanboys will all say it’s the best thing ever once Apple finally makes one and they get to use it, mark my words.
And yes, it is pretty amazing, maybe in a year, or two, or three ya’ll will find out.
It most certainly is opinion, and I disagree.

You better have good vision; otherwise, you'll hate it.

I used to have the SE, and went with the Pro Max. Now I have a Pro, and only because it was free. But my next phone has to be a Pro Max.
Text size is the same, it’s just the layout that changes.

That's it, waiting until next year. My XR is getting tired though.

Im in the same position, I would buy an iPhone like Jon's CAD of the iPhone 14 in a heartbeat. But my XR will need to keep going for another year. I think if it's slightly thicker even by the tiny amount the camera bump is, then it could maybe fit in a periscope zoom lens too.

So, no more Touch ID? Or fingerprint scanner?

Why would Apple implement Face ID and Touch ID at the same time?

If I recall it was something to do with it being secure enough to hold your passport then. Using double biometric security for it. But also as we are still wearing masks it would be helpful with that too.

I use both daily, the punch hole is objectively better.
You objectively have not understood what “objectively” means.

Edit: Wow, you actually went through the trouble of disagreeing with all my posts in this thread, even one where I asked the a simple an honest “why”? How do you even disagree with a question? Objectively?

The company that best manages technology innovation for me is Apple. Quite interesting. They tend to go for an idea that they know that can be executed well from the get go and improve it until there literally nothing else to improve rather than make the jump to a different approach.

The best way I have to describe is like game consoles … launch it and sits there until all the potential is realized … from user experience to performance.

This approach tend to provide the customer with a extremely good experience even if not novel and keep production costs lower.

Still sometimes I think they take it too far … eventually delaying of new and way better experiences way too long. Slowing down innovation.

My guess is that they haven’t yet moved on to a notch-less display is because of FaceID. They want to make it has good without the notch as it is now … from speed to security.

Otherwise reducing the size of the notch instead of entirely get rid of it is for me akin to dragging their feet.

Anyway, this leak now seams to me fundamentally pointless. The leaker could very well waited and have a greater impact … yet probably someone else would do it. Protagonism seams to be the currency at some point I guess.

The timing on all of these are suspicious, as though someone is trying to manipulate Apple stock.

If you say this enough times every year, it will eventually come true.

Apple just needs to ditch Face ID. Years later and it's still not great technology on my 12 Pro (I still have face scans fail and I have turned off requiring attention). This is especially true during a global pandemic that will likely be around for years. What's wrong with just picking up your phone and having it unlock because you're holding it? Just make the entire display Touch ID compatible. Face ID has always felt gimmicky to me. Sure, it's secure, but it's not the ideal way to use it. Then we don't have to worry about all of these compromises with under display areas that don't look right and are probably going to be expensive to engineer and manufacture.

yeah this is just a fair bit of whining to justify the use of the word gimmick when someone doesnt like something.

it's on millions of devices, works excellently, and thanks to the watch, works with a mask on.

much like with the iphone 4 debacle, you're holding it wrong.

I wonder if I’m in a tiny minority. I’m planning to swap my 12 Pro for a 13 mini as long as I don’t lose more than one of the cameras.

Small hands y’see. I’m willing to try the mini for a year and see if the lack of the Pro features and smaller screen size bothers me.
I love my 12 mini - and I have fat chunky fingers. It fits in front jeans pocket perfectly, it feels sturdier than the larger phones, the camera is the best I've had and the display is gorgeous. Battery life is the only negative.

Apple is so cheap when it comes to manufacturing hardware and innovations. But they charge sheets premium price on the name of security and 'FIRST TO MARKET'.

China is Apple's hardware and ideas supplier/
Apple is not cheap per se. They spent a lot of money pre-booking capacities of factories of the components they need, and they also spent the money to get the first tier. The problem with Apple is not them being cheap, but them chasing even more margins by making their support/services department to be profit making, resulting in poorer QA/design choices and charging customers large amount of money for design defects/repairs,

China might be the manufacturer/assembler, but many of the parts companies are actually Taiwanese, Japanese, Korean, etc. Take TSMC, that's a Taiwanese company. The camera module is form Sony.

1. I personally don't mind the notch - its never bothered me and hasn't impacted the way I use my handset at all.
2. If the 2022 iPhone is to have a 'notchless' design with an under-display Face-ID module, I would want to skip that cycle in order to let that mature and for Apple to iron out the kinks before I jump aboard.

If we get a notch redesign for this year, even if it just becomes a bit smaller, no way will they redesign again for next year. I also have trouble seeing them adopting such a prominent design choice as the pimple from other brands.
I agree. I guess I'd live with it, but I'd prefer a top bezel of that camera diameter than the punch hole.

We have an iPhone 12, 12 mini, 11, and 11 Pro Max in my house.
I love the Mini. It’s fast, great camera, and terrific size.
but the battery absolutely sucks. Lasts 2/3 of a day - moderate usage.
with that said, my daughters 12 has awful battery life of new. After 8 months, it’s at 90%-of-capacity. My 11 pro max is 93% after two years. (The mini is better; still 100%)
The saving grace of the 12 is that her school has a tower or repeaters right next to it. She comes home after over 7 hours with 85% remaining, yet she has a Watch and sometimes has to tether when the school internet goes out.

Am I the only one that doesn’t care for hole punch designs? The notch may not be perfect but at least it looks intentional and you stop noticing it after a day. I just find hole punch designs look more like manufacturing mistakes and having so much display around them makes the black dot stand out even more.

I’ll deal with it when it inevitably comes but I don’t get the notch hate if this is the alternative.

I hear you. I’m thinking of going from a 12 Pro Max to a 13 Mini.
