I'm actually really happy that the iPhone 5 beats the Samsung Galaxy S3 in almost every performance/speed/durability/design/etc metric. Not because I want to see the iPhone 5 win because I am obsessed with Apple... But because now the fandroids can finally shut up about how their phone is better and stop trolling! :apple:

Or so you would think! (You only have to look a few comments up to see that isn't the case.) ;)

There is a huge difference going from the 4S. crisp contrast and better colour saturation...The more I use it the more I like it. I was aslo very impressed streaming stuff from my 5 to my ATV's after the update last night...Very smooth.

Between this report, the performance benchmarks, and drop tests… it looks like Apple really nailed it with this hardware release. Thinner, lighter, stronger, faster, better looking screen… Great stuff. I was one of the people criticising the new design (specifically the two-toned back) when it was first leaked… but I'll gladly retract any negativity in light of all these very impressive reports.

Now if only th software wasn't such a drag.

Oh sure. My initial criticisms were aesthetic. Once I understood the nature of the unibody construction, and the purpose of those two windows, it made a lot more sense. Certainly the phone looks better in Apple's product shots than it did in those early mockups, but I haven't seen one in person yet to say whether I've warmed to the look or not. Either way, I'll support form following function any day.

I can't imagine Apple would ever sacrifice the lightness of aluminium. The drop tests show that this unibody construction is incredibly durable, so that's not an issue. Greater scratch resistance would be nice, but in my opinion it's a perfectly reasonable thing to compromise on to get those other gains.

I can see them sacrificing the lightness of aluminium for the key reason that its a bit tough to deal with and a phone might need to be pretty darned tough. The problem I see with steel is it might look too much like a lunch-pail, and aluminium just looks better when its new.

I just don't see a steel back looking too good. It'd look too dull. But in the next model, liquidmetal might be ready. So...I can definitely stick with this design for the next two years...

Brace yourselves, angry fandroids are coming.

BUT, b-b-but... the Galaxy S3 is bigger, and quad-something, and 3D 4G LTE Epic Touch Maxx Plus, and more megapixels, and has a removable battery, and has a non updatable OS [oops, scratch that], and has s-cloud/s-voice/s-etc.., and has.. a-and is... BIGGER

Did I miss anything?

I just LOL'ed. That was great. :D

Awful and ignorant comparison.

The best comparisons for the iP5 are the Optimus LTE and the HTC One X because they are all IPS and around/ over 320 PPI, with full RGB matrix.

Both the One X and the LTE are superior. DisplayMate sounds like noobs who think that only Apple and Samsung exist.

hey, and your signature says you have an optimus LTE! what a coincidence!

It's just amazing how up until September 12 EVERYONE was convinced it would be a ****** phone. It's hilarious.

That may be overstating it a bit. We knew there would be improvements. It's just that the long, skinny screen is a misfire. Yeah, it's a great phone. It's just that it could have been phenomenal.

The thing is, a lot of these "metrics" are subjective, so your wish will probably never come true. Take contrast for an example. Perhaps some like higher contrast, that's unrealistic. And for those who tout the realism in the color reproduction in the iPhone's screen, it's always interesting to note whether or not they choose to be as picky about how accurate reality is represented to them in other areas of entertainment or visual imagery. How about photographs? Or movies? It's also interesting to note that as far back as the 4, perhaps even earlier, Apple enthusiasts have been using the color/contrast accuracy argument.

There's actually a thread that disproves the whole Geekbench thing, at which point everyone started going back to the old position of dismissing benchmarks and only focusing on read world performance (which will be subjective).

I do agree that people who unnecessarily bring in Android phones into solely iPhone threads, or vice versa are rather annoying. But I guess since competition is ramping up that it's an inevitable side effect, as both sides have ardent supporters.

Wait till Jony comes out with 4.5" iphone. Y'all will mysteriously grown a longer thumb to accomodate.:D

And, since when Displaymate ever gives Apple a bad review???

They have just announced the

Sprint Samsung Galaxy S IV EPIC TOUCH 4 SKYROCKET LTE w/ HD SUPER AMOLED + CLOCKED AT 1.7GHz

Ha. Nothing can beat the AT&T HTC OPTIMUS TOUCH PRIME EPIC EXTREME AWESOME FASTBEAST SUPERCOOL LEGIT MONSTER 4G LTE/HSPA/CDMA/WTF w/ 9.5 INCH Super Xtreme Ultra HD Extreme AMOLED.

I await the day that phone names reach this level of nonsense.

In addition to having a 6" screen, it also toasts your bread and freezes your leftovers! :D

I doubt it. They will stick with 4" for a long time, IMO.

so iphone pretty much beats the cr*p out of SG III ... who would have thought :p

lol a great screen is nice, but it doesn't mean it beats the cr*p out of SGIII. lol you fanboys are funny!

Brace yourselves, angry fandroids are coming.

I'm just bracing myself for the Apple fanboys in this thread. Yea it's a Mac site and I own a Mac, but I won't deny that the iPhone 5 is still playing catch up to what's out there. So far we've seen better Javascript performance (big whoop really, even it was for Android) and a better screen. Yea that's great and I'm glad Apple can brag about it. It's a plus for it compared to the competition. But when you have people coming out saying it beats all other phones now based on this single thing, well that's just silly and something only a fanboy would say.

Apple's recent screens for the iPhone and iPad have always been the best. But lets compare other things and the iPhone 5 is still, for most people, a stretched out iPhone 4S.

For those who buy an iPhone 5, good for them. It's a phone. No big deal really, but don't be a fanboy about it.

With a larger screen the Galaxy III give you more of everything, more crap resolution, more lack of contrast, more gaudy inaccurate colours, and more low brightness. Yay!

Where did you see that everybody thinks the Galaxy SIII is the best smartphone on the planet? I'm sure there are some people that feel that way, but I haven't seen any independent study that says that.
I guess you weren't on the boards last week. Two thirds of the comments were along the lines of the iPhone 5 being the most disappointing Apple product ever, that it was the phone that Apple should have introduced last year, and that it was still playing catch up versus the Galaxy S3.

While I admit there are other great phones out there. The iPhone5 certainly isn't playing catch up. At least on the hardware side of things.

I'm assuming it's compared to the S3 because the S3 is more popular than those ones.

I'm pretty sure the whole point behind DisplayMate's test is to compare iPhone 5 with its predecessor and a competing screen technology ie. IPS vs. AMOLED. The One X is still based on the same screen tech as the iPhone 5 (and 4)- IPS. They're not reviewing phones. If you want you buy their software (the company designs and produces objective standardized test for all sorts of display) and test it yourself, I'm sure they won't mind. The price for the software (licensed for 5) starts at $995.

When they put out a product with an average screen?

when they compare to a product that doesnt have a low quality display? Comparing a top qualkity LCD to a pentile AMOLED display, and coming up with a verdict that hte LCD is better. really? did they actually require testing to tell us this astounding fact?

The Samsung display is pretty damn average. The HTC display is much nicer, but they also dont sell well, compared to apple or samsung.

How about getting a new ipod touch and telling us about that display.

I'm loving the new iPhone5 for the most part, compared to the 4S it's a solid upgrade in most aspects. The display is for sure better as far as richness of color, BUT, it seems to have a major flaw when I use it in the car with polarized sunglasses!! It seems that the screen polarizers are set 90 degrees off for my glasses. This gives me a dim display with no color unless I tilt my head to one side or the other. I don't recall this with my iPhone4S or HTC's before that. In landscape the phone looks good.

This simply sucks as I use my iPhone as my primary in-car Nav running Copilot Live and it's live realtime traffic based re-routing capability.

I'd have thought Apple would have thought of outdoor use with polarized glasses...
