sounds a bit elitist to me....

How so? Is hoping for something more than mindless entertainment elitist? Believe me, I love to be entertained as much as the next guy, but shutting off my brain and accepting everything I see on a screen to be indisputable doesn't entertain. It bores.

First: why were the aliens there?
Second: cat food? wtf?
Third: the aliens were obviously an advanced race, yet they were complete morons. And don't give me that working class vs. smart guy class, any mullet headed nascar junkie knows when they're being ripped off.
Fourth: why the hell would they shoot it like a documentary? There is no way in hell they could get half of those shots then!! There wasn't a camera guy with the main character for 90% of the movie. (PS: I am so sick and tired of faux documentaries)
Fifth: why the hell would an energy source turn what's-his-face into a shrimp?

First and second don't really need explaining, but it looks as if the ship malfunctioned and they had to stop on Earth.

Third: If the "workers" were genetically inferior than the rulers, than yes, they would be lost/clueless without them. Ants get lost and starve to death if they lose a scent trail set down by the others, etc. What's the point of aliens if they behave and function like us, anyway?

Fourth: it started like a documentary, but the middle of the film was just shot like an action movie. Were the Bourne movies shot like documentaries? The people interviewed in the fake interviews said no one really knew what happened, so the middle of the movie where the plot is explained is obviously not meant to have been caught on any camera except the CCTV ones in District 9

Fifth: The aliens energy worked by fusing the technology with their DNA. We're aren't really supposed to understand it, though.

All your points are valid ones, really. But I think most people just don't care that much in a summer movie.

Am I the only person in the world who still sees film making as an art?

It can be, but it doesn't have to be. I love few things more than a great steak paired with a great wine. But every so often, I've gotta have Taco Bell too.

Its still a movie, an artform, just not one that appeals to you. Don't get me wrong, i dont like stupid movies, but i don't go and make them seem like some sort of insult to my superior tastes as you seem to come off.

I dont even remember the last time i watched a movie that wasn't a documentary, its been months.

The plot definitely had some problems.

How were the humans able to so easily understand the aliens foreign language? Same for the aliens understanding english.

The aliens were clearly much stronger than humans but didn't offer up much resistance. Why would the aliens give up their truly superior weaponry to the humans?

They were going to go door to door evicting aliens and sending them to a tent city?

Why did the government just let the aliens ride camp out in the sky for 20 years, hovering and all that and looking ominous? Clearly it was an eye sore to the community and should've been properly dismantled or destroyed.

So the aliens love canned cat food?

The Nigerians always get the bad rap. ;)

I think a lot of the plot holes were left open on purpose. Filling these in and spoon-feeding the audience explanation and information would detract from the flow of the story. Less is more in this case. Do you really want to understand why every detail is so? I think we were fed enough information with the first bit of documentary-style storytelling. We only need a bit of backstory to understand what's going on; beyond that, let what happens on screen speak for itself.

Yep, not every movie is a classic.

Some are merely meant to be enjoyed for whatever reason. :)

Anyhow, looking forward to seeing District 10.

I was just at district 9 yesterday. I got a pair of crocs!

Oh god that's boring and elitist. Having been in several films myself, I can tell you that they're a s***load of work no matter what they are. They certainly aren't all meant to be "art". Some of them are just meant to be fun! Loosen up or you'll become old, bitter and mean way too young. And if you're looking for art films, there are tons of them. I have no idea why you would go to something like District 9 and expect high art. That's just misplaced expectations.

Oh- and I know people in the porn biz as well. It's a hell of a lot of work too. Don't put it down til you've seen what goes into it. Film serves different purposes. It's not all required to be art.

if you are zoning out during a movie, not watching every shot, every transition and paying attention to exactly what the director wants to happen then you have no real meaning to watch a movie

i can remember a specific example when people would say that the movie Coraline was childish and boring.

I think I've been misunderstood. I wasn't looking for an art film or something classic. I simply meant there is an art to film making. Consistent directing is necessary, especially in a faux documentry as the camera becomes a character itslef. Filling plot holes and explaining important details are necessary to the story and mistakes or odd details shouldn't just be ignored. In fact I think making the film a DOCUMENTRY it was even more important to explain missing facts.

I think I'm more than entitled to an opinion, and I stand by it. I see the entertaiment value in the film, but it had a lot of distracting flaws, and no memorable scenes. Making it a pretty disappointing film.

And Lee, I have nothing against pornographic films, I meant more of an old meaning for the word. As in rubish or meaningless drivel, meant to simply distract people.

We'll have to agree to disagree. ;) I see what you mean, I just didn't find any of that to be distracting or bad.

Exactly, that's what I liked about the film. However, I was a bit disappointed by the film, I feel it was over hyped a bit too much before it's release, I had such super high hopes for it, but it was just another semi-meaningful shot at human rights violations and along with blistering CGI.

I still liked it though, and will easily buy it on DVD.

Good movie, worth a watch. As far as plot holes go, I don't think you need to have full comprehension of every little thing that happens in a film. If some things are left out it's not a big deal to me.

This is exactly why I liked this movie, it wasn't the typical Hollywood "pointing out the obvious" style shmuck that I've really grown to dislike. Just watched it last night and thought it was pretty brilliant, didn't turn out like I expected (I thought that 'hybrid' guy was going to die soon after and it would trigger some kind of massacre).
Was also one of the only films in a while that we actually talked about on the way home, again thanks to the unannounced details.

When film making loses its art it becomes pornography.

Wow, I've paid a LOT of money to go see pornography at the movie theatre then!! ;)

Nah, it just didn't suit you. Everyone has their own tastes. I thought it was a great film. Like some of the others here, I really like the plot holes because it makes me think and come to my own conclusions. I don't need to have everything explained to me, I like to make part of the story my own too.

I love few things more than a great steak paired with a great wine. But every so often, I've gotta have Taco Bell too.

Ha ha! I vote this as the best post in the thread. :)

I only got about 15 minutes into it. I'm very sensitive to the "shaky cam", but my friends loved it. I will definitely rent it though.

I thought it was ok, a good sci-fi flick that combined an interesting plot (very novel way to cover apartheid) with good acting and great effects.

Enjoyable watch.

Pretty good film, though for some reason the accent and manner of speaking of Wikus always made me thing of the juvenile delinquent kid Jonah from the TV show Summer Heights High, which made everything about himjust that much more comedic to me.

I guess it would make sense for the sequel to be released in three years -- the amount of time it'll take for Christopher Johnson to fly home and back.

Not the most original film going -- made me think of Children of Men meets Halo or something -- but pretty entertaining.

District 9

Just saw it on DVD. Wow, outstanding low budget flick! The story is good reinforced with top notch effects. I could do with less "documentary" style movie making, however this movie starts as documentary and moves to cinematic. I think I'm going to watch it a second time! ;)

Be warned: every other word starts with "f" and graphic violence as in dismemberment and people being splattered by alien weapons.

I only liked the last 20 mins. In the beginning, I really disliked the main character; the scrawny guy with the accent, but came to like him in the end. :)
