The font in left panel of system settings is TINY. Isn't there a way to increase the size in settings without touching the font size systemwide?

I never liked the settings app on iOS, there's way too much categories and lists. It always felt unorganized to me. On the other hand, the preferences app on macOS is well organized. You can quickly find what you're looking for when you have the hang of it just by recognizing the image corresponding the category you're looking for.

The new setting on Ventura is the reason why I'll stay with Monterey for now.

I like the new Settings after using it for a while. Took some time but now when I open Preferences on my Studio it seems outdated... (only have Ventura on a backup MBP)

you'll give up any bug fixes, enhancements, improvements in the new OS... because you don't like the look of system settings, a place you'll rarely need to visit? huh

For now, my iMac finally works as I expected and with my previous experience of updating day 1 isn't very good so yeah, I'll update one day, but not right away and the new settings app don't help me wanting Ventura ASAP. In fact, there's nothing groundbreaking about Ventura that helps me jumping into this train yet.

And with security patches, Monterey will still be supported so I don't know whats the problem.

no problem, just surprised when someone says they won't update because of something like the look of system settings.

ventura, like every mac OS before it, has value in what happens under the hood, far more essential than new features. but you update when it's right for you, that's reasonable 👍

only used it for a couple minutes but to be frank I dont mind it and doesn't feel jarringly 'iPadification of Mac' to me

the previous settings was archaic - its been the same for how long? OS X at its inception?

All good! Anyway, I always said year after year that I should wait before updating and when the release day comes, I updated because I was too curious so this year could be no different 😃

There is no way to manually grant an app access to removable drives in Privacy and Security/Files and Folders settings now.

This prevents me from selecting my external backup drive for inclusion in my BB online backup. The main BB app has Full Disk Access as required (first screenshot is from their support article) but the BB menu app also needs access to removable volumes. The BB app did not request access to removable volumes on reinstalling the software and there’s no way to do it manually anymore (second screenshot). At least, no visible way via the new Ventura settings UI.

I’ve followed all of the instructions in BB’s other support articles about external drives but nothing works, or will work until it has access to removable volumes, which Ventura appears to be blocking.

This currently prevents me from including my external drive (containing the 3TB backup of the contents of my NAS) in my BB online backup, which it did until I installed Ventura.

Have reported this to BB, and expect I will prob need to await a software update from them once Ventura is officially released.

I couldn't resist and today installed Ventura in my MacBook Pro M1. I will have to keep Monterey in my iMac for work since I have crucial 3rd party software that I must use. I made a backup and will be careful not to write over it in case I need to roll back.

About This Mac was the first change I noticed.

Pretty much, yes. This is how it looked like in Mac OS X 10.0, and while it has been tweaked in every version since then, Ventura is the first fundamental change I would say.

It’s a bad design on iOS and a worse design on MacOS because it’s different using a mouse pointer. It’s easier to click things on a grid than it is on iOS

It would’ve been cool to see Apple improve system preferences for real but “just make it look like iOS” is a braindead solution

The new settings app is better in this case, as you don’t need to scroll the list. Not saying it’s perfect, but there are better examples of where it needs work (the Trackpad pane being one of them).

This is an example of what I’m talking about. It’s better because they made the window slightly taller. But why didn’t they really rethink the app and allow us to resize the window to the size we want? It’s still the same app with worse navigation this time

I don't mind it, but don't love it. I'm sure over time muscle memory will kick in and I won't even remember it ever got updated.

it's 'easier to click on a grid'? i am not experiencing any difficulty in clicking on anything in system settings.... it's like clicking on anything anywhere on your mac. you move the cursor where you want... and click.

i think people need to give it time; to adapt, get used to it. once you do, it... is what it is: a place to (sometimes) go to change a system setting.

took me about 4 days on the beta to get used to it, and now i would never want to go back to the previous 'system preferences'....

I've not been keeping up with all the news etc from Ventura betas so had no idea about the big changes to the Settings app. All I can really say so far is that it's utterly godawful and already has me wanting to roll back Ventura. It seems to take all the worst bits of the iOS settings app and somehow make it even worse.

Not impressed here so far.

how long is 'so far'? and why would anyone abandon a new OS because of the look of system settings... a place they will rarely visit? 🤔
