How so?

In the UK, pretty much everyone had switched to instant coffee. In the US, the most popular coffee was watered down filter ****.

For all it's failings, Starbucks is a step up!

I always wondered what happened to UK cuisine. With it's proximity to the continent, I had much higher expectations.

Whomever invented instant coffee should be shot in the head*.

*Except when it's used within deserts.

1. What don't you understand about this not being fact? It is your opinion only.

2. You are clearly acting superior.

3. I have tried many brands of tea, including the two that you mention and even some teas from regions of Europe you probably haven't tried. That doesn't change the fact that Tetley's is tea, and that I like it.

Is it acting superior to claim what McDonald's makes is really not hamburgers, even though they fit the technical definition of a hamburger ?

Really, there's mass market tea (Four O'Clock, Twinnings, Bigelow), and then there's mass market "tea" (Tetley's, Red Rose, Lipton) which while still being tea leaves, is hardly what I'd call proper tea.

Yes, this is my opinion, and yes frankly, if someone came up to me and said McDonald's BigMac is a burger, I'd probably tell them the same thing I told you about Tetley's.

In the end enjoy it if that is in your ballpark, but really, for the same price I'd rather get something better.

It's like calling a Bud/Miller/Coors, a beer. Sure, it may be a beer in the literal sense of the word, but we all know that it's not really a beer.

Good show, same analogy, different food/drink type.

And no, I wouldn't call Bud/Miller/Coors beers... Where's the bitterness, the subtle flavors of the grain and other seasonings ?

Sure it's technically yeast, hops and fresh water...

Anyone who took my "Tetley's not tea" in the first degree really missed out on what I was saying.

----------

Im sorry but anyone who says a tea selection is "too commercial" comes off like a giant D-bag.
You may call a tea selection bad, because of poor quality (And I believe Sbucks has good quality teas, even if they only do have pretty standard selection).

StarBucks sells you a 20 cent tea bag of a mass market brand for like a buck fifty.

I'm sorry, that's just too "commercial" for me. At least if they had the imported stuff at 30$/kg. That's why I think StarBucks sucks for tea (and really, any mass coffee chain is going to overcharge for tea anyhow, which is why I stay away from them).

----------

It's done the same thing that McDonalds did for America.

Did StarBucks really do something big in the US ? Because here in Montreal, before StarBucks "invaded", we had plenty of coffee chains already well established, doing what StarBucks is doing at a much higher level (Presse Cafe, Cafe Supreme, Cafe Depot).

I usually go to this other chain here because they add chocolate powder stars on top of my mocha. :D

I know this is a Starbucks Coffee thread, but a large Costa hot chocolate...*drool*

Even if I'm in a rush, I make sure to stop by a Costa if I see one and order a hot chocolate. Heaven :p

SB ruined whatever chance there was for a reasonable cafe scene. All of my Eurofriends love NYC because it's how Eurocities were 20 years ago before every reasonable location turned into a super-expensive retail shop selling 300€ jeans. So, there's potential there, but it's been/being ruined by assembly line expectations driven by Starbucks and such.

Sidewalk table service ... what's that, why would I want to be outside in the sun?
Standing at a 2m long bar to drink coffee ... I ain't got time for that and I don't want to talk with a random guy or read the paper!
Caramel in coffee ... yeah I'll take two!
Whipped cream ... hit me.

seriously wtf mate

How did KnightWRX burn himself? He drank obscure/non commercial tea before it was cool.

I actually don't mind drinking the mass market stuff. What I do mind is paying StarBucks prices for it. My guilty pleasure is a nice Twinnings Earl Grey (can't get more mass market, commercial than that) with some Social Tea cookies.

But really, people here like to twist the comment that StarBucks overcharges for what is essentially grocery store tea into "look at the snob who only drinks boutique Tea". MacRumors being MacRumors.

But bud and miller are flavor-less beers. Starbucks is full of roasted bean flavor, evidenced by the complaint here of the strong roasted flavor.

It's more like an imported classic English style IPA : beer :: Starbucks : Coffee.

It comes down to whether the person likes the flavor of roasted beans, like it depends on the consumer if they like the flavor of brewed hops.

If not, there's flavor-less options.

Fine i forgot to add Lattes/weird drinks to the starbuck coffee part, those taste nothing at all like coffee, which is what i meant, taste nothing at all like... :)

My wife's got a Gold card, and I was thinking about getting one too.

I have no love for Starbucks, but IMO mediocre coffee is better than no coffee at all, and Starbucks is ubiquitous to the point where it's commonly the most convenient choice - especially when you spend as much time at airports as I do.

Beggars can't be choosers!

(I drink my coffee black, btw)

Yea, but only teen girls buy that garbage.

Not really a fan of Starbucks. Their generic brew coffee tastes over-roasted, and the $$ plus empty calorie content of the foo foo drinks is laughable.

I have a gold card, but I barely drink Starbucks now. Found an independent coffee shop near me with better tasting lattes that I'd rather pay extra for the syrup + milk modifications.

I go to Starbucks almost every day, pay with a Starbucks prepaid card, but I've never registered it because I was too lazy. But now I Googled this, and apparently you get a free drink every 15 drinks? They don't send you junk mail etc., do they?

Register card

You should really register your card. They DO NOT send you junk mail at all. IF they send you ANYTHING it is ALWAYS coupons for FREE beverages of your choice. A free beverage after 15 stars and a free beverage on your birthday. Made to your specific orders.:D

I like starbucks. I don't mind paying $1.50 for a cup of coffee. I'm used to paying $2.60 for an energy drink from the Sodexo cart in my school's library, for $2.30 for one off-campus.

For me, starbucks is cheap. And getting a free smoothie for breakfast every $22 is a no-brainer.

PLUS if you ever lose your (registered) Starbucks card, they'll mail you out a new one with the balance on it.

Cash is king, I go wherever I choose. With no desire for a "gold card" or any other so called status symbols, the freedom afforded by cash is unlimited. :)

We don't even have a Starbucks where I live. We used to but Sheetz gas station put them out of business (and they were in the mall!)

Its very very hard to top Sheetz....

(Oh ya, I forgot there is one in the Barnes and Noble but thats it).

Here in the Netherlands we only have 14 Starbucks.

But we do have a lot of other COFFEE SHOPS.:D

I haven't tried it yet (I only moved to the UK recently) but I'll be sure to order one soon! :D
