Having used my 14” MacBook Pro for a month, I’m barely aware of it. My desktops are fairly dark. I do like the fact that I have a larger screen in the same sized body as the 2015 13” MPB it replaced. I also have several options to render it invisible if need be. But that’s just me. I understand that others are absolutely enraged by it; good thing there are lots of computers to choose from.

you are forgetting to write - To YOU it is. Most people dont agree with you thou.
Especially real Creative Professionals so PRO’s
For anyone in the visual fields - the notch is a catastrofy for work
A creative PROFESSIONAL will understand that elements in the visual periphery will tend to be ignored very quickly and will have their focus on their work area which is not impacted by the notch.

As for “most people” not agreeing with me, even on this thread complaining about the notch, only 55% of people think the notch is bad, the rest don’t think so or didn’t even bother to vote in the poll.

If it bothers you so much why don’t you use one of the apps that makes the menubar dark? You seem particularly bothered by it so a little effort to minimize it might be worthwhile.

Having had my MBP 14 for a week now I cant say I've noticed the notch its hidden in the menu bar which if in dark mode like mine is you don't really see it and the only app I've noticed doesn't work too well with it is Cinema 4D where its has so many menu items they now go xxx... as they don't fit but hopefully that'll be fixed soon

Don’t the extra menu items just appear on the right side of the notch? Regardless if the app is updated or not? That was what I saw. Obviously if you have a lot of menu icons you will get a conflict but the menu items win. that has always been a problem for some apps. I use Bartender to handle those extra icons.

I don't notice it often but when I so its annoying. Just the other day I had to adjust Usage because I added Aldente and Mac fan control to the menu bar and I was out of space. When the icons flowed behind the notch that was the first time I noticed it and found it to be a problem. I'd rather a uniform screen, I think most would prefer that and with the size of the notch they should have included Face ID with it.

That said, its not that big of a deal if you are on dark mode you rarely even see it.

You should check out Bartender. If you have enough icons to reach the notch then you may have conflicts between menus and icons. Bartender lets you get control of those icons and move the off the menubar.

I will, thanks for the info.

No notch. Here's a good app.

well. there actually arent - if your workflow involves OSX

actually - NO.

I've had my 16" M1 Pro for a couple days and really haven't noticed the notch at all because I have my menu bar set to look like this. I like having the menubar using that top screen real estate that would just be part of the bezel otherwise. Yes, when I go back to the desktop the notch shows up usually because of the light wallpapers I tend to use but if it ever becomes a problem I'll probably just use a utility to make the menubar all black on the desktop.

I tried it out and I couldn't stand the notch. It's not a good design choice no matter which way you cut it. I will be keeping my M1 MacBook Pro until the inevitable notch(less) MBP is released. Besides, It's technically a 1st gen product. It will only improve after this. That makes me feel better about skipping it.

What could have been. ?

What should have been.

I'm still baffled by the notch. The camera really isn't very good in these new MBP's and I'm not sure why it exists with no faceid except that Apple is going to include faceid in future MBP's and wanted to just get the notch introduction out of the way.

No notch all day every day

At a cursory glance, I dont like just about any of the design decisions

-Thicker which is fine but it seems substantially thicker which is something I appreciate about my Air coming even from a 2016 Pro.
-hideous feet not even rounded and subtle like on current and previous Mac laptops. looks tacky and inelegant even in stock photos.
-Notch
-black border keyboard mat surrounding the black keys, contrast disparity between it and the chassis is nullified.
-3 USB-C TB4 ports? There was 4 on the Toucbar Macs. I'm fine with 2 on my Air, but one less port for 'higher throughput'?
-3.5 lbs. Ouch.

a whomping 4.7/4.8 lbs for the 16" too. That's terrible. That's like a gaming laptop that never leaves the desk.

I think the hype surrounding return to ports is kinda meh. Glad to see Magsafe return but mind boggling why it ever went away. And cant be too excited about something that was the status quo forever until Tim's reign.

They couldn't have gone HARDER on the space grey too? I want a saturated black MacBook like the 13" polycarbonate days. Otherwise, silver.
Agree on thicker. Disagree on feet - never see ‘em. Haven’t thought about em even once. Disagree on black keyboard BG. Looks fine. Don’t mind it at all.
Agree re ports. BUT 3 times full TB USBc ports now as opposed to only 2 before.
Agree on weight. It’s a brick!

Deeper space grey? Yeah. That’s cool but it’s fine. It’s nothing to worry about.

As for no notch. What is the reasoning? I haven’t noticed the notch once in almost 2 months. It’s a non issue for vast majority of users.
Yeah, it couldn't be that people legitimately find a cutout on the screen visually jarring.
Thing is. You don’t see it if you don’t use a white or light colored background. I totally forgot about it. It never gets in the way.

I know there are some apps that will run into trouble and those apps just need to adjust. The fact is the notch gives us EXTRA screen. So to complain about extra screen seems odd to me. If you want to talk about iPhone notch and how much it sucks then I’m totally on board. But I bet half the people complaining don’t even have a notch book pro

I'm not sure anyone would ever prefer the notch. A more appropriate question would be "Does the notch annoy you or not?"
Agreed - it's sort of been lost now since this thread is a bit old. But when this thread / poll first came out, most people who voted "Yes notch" was voting under the definition that the notch was a requirement to get the bezels as-is. So we were answering the question "Would you rather 1) have no notch (but larger top bezel like older MBPs), or 2) yes notch (as implemented, in order to get same size bezels all around).

Probably obvious, but I'm sure no one would say they prefer a notch if they could get the exact same experience (eg. bezels to the edge, same size as side bezels) and the same camera system etc. without a notch.

Yeah I agree with you. The only issue I have is that the camera system really isn't very good. My 2017 iMac Pro kills the new MacBook Pro's camera and to me its still a very poor laptop camera. Its better than the Touch Bar models but not by much which is why I don't understand why they needed the notch in the first place.

Economy of scale. Mass producing the screen model to support thinner face ID later to maximize profit. The notch proves that this is the first gen and later we will see something interesting happen on that empty space.
Honestly, I mostly work on my large reference monitor and the notch means nothing.

Yeah that makes sense and I had commented that exact same thing earlier. Its almost a shame that Apple is forcing early adopters to the new MacBook Pros to the notch when there is really no reason for it. Ok you could argue that there is a reason for it but it certainly doesn't have to be as large as it has when there is nothing behind said notch. Without the faceid sensors like in the iPhone and iPad its just a black bar who's only purpose is get the notch in the public eye for when faceid launches on the newer models next year or in 2023 (more likely).

No notch especially because the web cam is trash they could of just put it in the small bezel

The camera module is fairly large in part because the lid is thin. Besided the camera, there is a True Tone sensor and an ambient light sensor and two mounting brackets. Making it smaller would require reengineering that module. It might be done but hasn’t been a priority, yet. It makes sense to reduce bezel sizes on a laptop as that lets you keep the case size smaller for the same or larger screen. There is much less case for smaller bezels and a notch for desktop displays.
