People who just sit and say "Smoking is bad for you. Why would anyone want to give themselves cancer?" isn't thinking. Sorry, but you're not. Not everyone who smokes gets lung cancer, and not everyone who doesn't smoke will avoid getting lung cancer. Christopher Reeves' wife is an example. Poor diets kill more people than smoking does, but many of the people who don't smoke won't say anything about that. Same with people who have ever had a sunburn.

Lets ban preaching. It's annoying and doesn't do us any good. Everyone finds release in their own way. :)

Amen. :p

As someone who doesn't smoke and doesn't like smoking, I'll say that, in an ideal situation, we would focus our preaching attentions towards bad diets and being really fat...as that is more of a problem than anything in the US right now.

These days, only stupid people smoke.

Sorry
I would say that it's only those who take it up today. Those who've been doing it for years and are already hooked, as Les Kern said, it's hard to stop, especially if you started when we thought the most dangerous thing a fag could do is give you a paper cut

I don't care if people smoke, but just as they have the right to choose whether to smoke or not, others should have the right to not have to inhale smoke when someone near them is smoking.
Having to inhale other's smoke is the thing I really dislike. And (I know I'm going to sound harsh here) wasting taxes fixing people up over smoking. Sure, if you've got private health insurance, be cool with it, but why are organisations like the NHS spending so much on smokers on anything other than rehab. Just like normal insurance, with health insurance, if you did the damage deliberatly, then it's a nocando. The same goes for alcoholics

I don't. I've tried, and found it a little boring, but I could sort of see how some would like it.

I wouldn't mind smokers, if I didn't care about them. I know that lots of you know the consequences of smoking, and yes, it is your choice and I won't think of you as any less than a non-smoker.

But remember, your suffering is your loved one's suffering. Think of the loss you would be to them, should you pass away from smoking. :(

Same with dying in a car accident, or speeding, even if it's only several kms/miles over the limit. Do you drive, though? Ever speed before? Ever?

Drive? Yes. Speed? No [I'm in no position to speed, as I don't have my license yet, I will by the end of next week ]... Am a going to guarantee that I won't _ever_ speed? No. I totally see your point. But to me, there's some psychological torture from seeing a loved one kill themselves over the years.

I know its a never ending debate. I just know I will be in a lot of pain if a loved one ever passed away from smoking. Its just not the way to go. :(

I had asthma growing up, and oh, I said the "only stupid people smoke" thing more than once. Then I went abroad, had a chain-smoking coworker and a fair amount of stress and cheap cigarettes, and voilá! I was a smoker.

I quit when I came home for a couple months before grad school, and then started again this past fall. Then suddenly, I just decided I was sick of it--the cost, the smell, the cough, the huddling in the cold. I admit to still smoking a good cigar on occasion, and the hookah rocks, too.

I get the occasional craving. But I'm finding ways to cope. I'm not going to preach, 'cause I hated that more than I hated the actual tar in my lungs when I smoked. But those of you who still are: it's always a good time to try quitting.

To those of you who quit cold turkey: kudos. If anyone thinks you were "weak" for starting, you redeemed yourself and then some.

Oh, and TMA: nice to see another RLC fan. :D

I don't smoke. I don't really give a damn if others do, as if I really care about anyone else's health.

But the only reason I passionately despise smokers is because I live in Japan. These people have no manners or sense whatsoever. Kind of ironic with the whole Japanese image of being overtly polite but, hey whaddaya know. They smoke on the street while walking (some districts have banned them but most smokers just ignore it because there's zero enforcement), they smoke in restaurants, they smoke in taxis, they smoke in parks... everywhere.

It's not so much the adverse effect of second-hand smoking that bugs me, but it's the STENCH. Cigarettes smell AWFUL and dammit get that thing away from my face. Go into a closed room full of smoke if you want, but don't do it around me or you'll get punched in the face. Fuc*ers ruining my clothes.

I don't drink or do any drugs either, but that's just me.

Never smoked ... I now have enough health related concerns to deal with. It is terribly unwise to engage in a practice that has a proven track record of adding to a person's list of problems as the years pass.

Those people who get upset at the comments about smokers being stupid and weak, sorry but it is the truth. Well smokers under 30 at any rate, i'll accept that perhaps before that time the evidence hasn't been quite so compelling for the overwhelming detrimental effects of smoking. I do feel sorry for older people, those who served in the armed forces, who were almost encouraged to smoke. But younger people who smoke make me angry irrespective of the nonsense that they come out with to justify their habits.

As for the people who object to the 'preachers' I'm sorry if you find us so much more objectionable and bigoted than smokers, obviously there's a danger we might improve your quality of life. I for one feel a certain obligation to be preachy as I work in a job when I frequently encounter people who have taken the decision to smoke at the expense of someone else who has no say in the matter - namely parents. Curiously it is very rare to meet a parent who admits to smoking around their children and they'll tell you how much they love them. However, the evidence is there for all to see, a parent's second hand smoke will harm their child and yet they continue to subject them to it!

So for you smokers who complain that life is stressful, here's an idea try taking some exercise or developing new coping techniques - plenty of us get stressed out without feeling compelled to stick a burning ember in between our lips and inhale. If you're addicted then seek help (but i still think that you were weak to start). If you want to turn around and say that drinking/over eating/underage sex etc are bigger problems i believe that is called cognitive dissonance - stop making excuses and sort yourselves out. And if you're one of those unapologetic, I've made my bed and i'll lie in it smokers - find your corner and die quietly because COPD (let's leave cancer for a bit) is a really crappy way to go.

[Those people with IBD, I'll let you off!]

For the record I've never tried smoking, I don't drink alcohol, I'm not overweight (although my diet leaves a lot to be desired) and I regularly drink large quantities of coke.

Who said reason and practicality aren't violent?

I've seen friends and colleagues trying to give up, with varying amounts of success. I know intelligent, rational smokers who know the risks but presumably decide the pleasure is worth it. I figure personality has a lot to do with it, becoming addicted that is, because whilst I have smoked for curiosity and can understand the appeal (it *does* give quite a buzz and it *was* kinda cool at school), it never really made much sense to me, or didn't really hook me. Perhaps I'm lucky, as I'm not easily hooked by much. Though incessantly checking emails and text messages may count as a vice. ;)

Incidentally, for the non-smokers amongst us... ever tried nicorette gum/tablets? Man they can be quite cool. Like a mega dose of caffeine. No, we're not supposed to take them, and no I don't regularly, but it's got to be like smoking without all the risks. They don't half make your throat sting though!

No violence involved just the slow end of someone who can't catch their breath - I've watched it happen and it's frustrating and heart aching but when your lungs pack in there isn't a lot anyone can do for you.

Heaven forbit some people use a Dell or run Windows XP, but consume a cancerous product? Sure, why not...

I dont smoke, mostly out of respect for my father who just quit after smoking for more then 35 years.

Alright! I know bloody why as well! This is to all those smokers saying that us non-smokers are the ones ticked off.

You smokers smoke. Obviously. Non smokers do not smoke. Logic! Right? So why on gods almighty earth do smokers think that non smokers want them stood next to them passing down all those ****** chemicals, all that poison? You smokers wouldn't mind, obviously. hell it's like smoking a free cigarette. You'd probably be chuffed. But to the non smoker you guys are a pain in the ass. Except those who only smoke in private. You're alright.

How many times have you non-smokers been on a bus, only to have retarded plebs at the back start smoking? You ask them to stop. they don't. me and my mate Adam got kicked off the bus for punching a smoker.
Or stood in a queue outside and to have somebody smoking down wind to you?
It's an effin pain in the arse.

So to all you smokers who think we should all be nice to you all, and have no say in the matter, think again.

*all for zero tolerance public smoking ban*

Ok i am 20, i am very much in the going out scene. I personally hate smoking and i really dont care much for people who do smoke! i dont say that with the slightest bit of pity for those who do smoke, because 9/10 times people start smoking to look "cool", to do something that is "illegal" at that age.
Heck i have tried a cig and i did when i thought wow i need to be cool/rebellious.
i have no problem when smokers smoke among themselves, but when i go out, i come back home; my clothes stink, my hair stinks...everything stinks.
Smoking IS unhealthy for you and people around u and there has been no good reason put forth as yet to justify why someone smokes.
People who say that it helps against anxiety..please.
Ok there is my rant, enjoy ur weekend :)

I can understand why you're angry but I think it's misdirected.

From the sounds of it, some very inconsiderate people have smoked near you and it's bothered you. Punch them by all means, shoot them in the face if you like, they deserve it by the sounds of it - Why should they threaten your health?

You're saying that all/majority of smokers are like this which really ticks me off.

I'm not sure that would have been the same if you had had 4-5 bottles of tequila a week. :p
