I don't think there will be any extra apps for 2.0, tbh the WWDC announcement seemed alot like Apple were scraping the barrel for things to talk about, aside from the iPhone 3G obviously, if there was any extra apps, the would have used them then to beef the announcement out a bit more

I don't recall seeing 10 minutes of that??

Maybe not 10 minutes-- but at least 3. The point is that features promised weren't delivered. Whether you think they are important or not is another story....My point is that Apple has lately overpromised....

KEYNOTE: Macworld 2007 Transcript

10:18am Steve Jobs: " Today we are announcing Yahoo will offer free push-IMAP email to iPhone customers. This isn't just IMAP, this is push-email, same as a BlackBerry."

10:20am -
"I can look at my email in a split view, just like I'm on my computer. I like the fullscreen view -- we have the standard inbox, drafts, all the folders, real email just like you're used to, right here on your phone. Again, free IMAP email from Yahoo."

10:34am - "You also can't think about the internet without thinking about Yahoo. We've got Yahoo search built right in, and we've got Yahoo IMAP email services. So it's my great pleasure to introduce Jerry Yang, co-founder and Chief Yahoo!"

FYI- Yahoo PUSH fell through, and the much requested split screen email still isn't available.

The splitscreen thing may have fallen through, but Yahoo very much does offer push mail services. The feature isn't iPhone specific, as far as I know, but it does exist.

On the topic at hand... Apple is releasing the App Store in July. Do you really believe they won't sell some of their own apps through it? I expect to see quite a few surprises from Apple through the App Store, I just don't expect them to be free.

As for video, my family, who is scattered around the country, does video conferencing quite often. If I were away from my child for business and only had my phone, then sure I'd love to see her, and she me!

My brother and his daughter live hundreds of miles away from each
other (daughter lives with mum) and they communicate via 3G video calls. As you hinted at, it's not a totally redundant feature.

The App Store, worth $25 alone? - Huh, No. Apple's App Store is a revenue-generating machine, I shouldn't have to pay to access something which ultimately is going to generate even more revenue for Apple. I'm happy to pay, but I shouldn't have to. I have no problem with the price of the 2.0 software update, it's placed at a gracious price-point for us iPod touch users, alot better than the Janurary Software update, which stung at $20.

The App Store is worth $7, if that. this charge would reflect the free content on the App Store. The $9.95 charge is subsidized 'credit' for the App Store if you like, but if you think the App Store in the 2.0 software update is worth around $25 alone, you must either like throwing money hand-over-fist to Apple, or your perception of this software update is warped.

I don't understand...you don't think access to hundreds if not thousands of new high quality apps is worth paying $10 for? Just because it's allowing Apple to make more money??? If there's ANY software feature you think is missing from the iPhone, you are pretty much guaranteed that it'll show up in the App store at some point, except MMS or cut/paste. Yes, I would pay $25 or even $50 for that if I had to.

And note, Apple probably had to spend a LOT of money developing the App Store - from the looks of things, they spent a lot of time making it a very robust service with a clean interface. Not to mention all the work they had to do (thus money they had to spend) to make the SDK easy to use and bug-free, the documentation complete and accurate, and hire and prepare support staff for both developers and iPhone owners. It's not like every dollar spent is profit to Apple, it's gonna take a bit to break even from all that.

I did for several days after the WWDC, but as time has rolled by I'm leaning toward NOTHING.

Two of the things that I was hoping for were Video Conferencing and Mobile TV. VC especially after the whole front camera sighting on the device Phil was presenting Mobile Me on. If indeed it did have a front facing camera, who's to say they didn't have a certain number produced to get a jump start on development and testing for the gen 3? Just my 2 cents.

As time has passed I've come back to reality and feel stupid for even thinking and promoting the hype. Apple doesn't need to impress us 1 gen iPhone owners here in the U.S. with new features for version 2 because they are relying on making much bank internationally with peeps like us who were stoked when the 1 gen came out initially.

Unfortunately, I believe we're going to have to wait at least another year, if not longer, for anything hardware related. That is unfortunate, but what are you going to do?

I for one am seriously thinking on just hanging on to my current iPhone and waiting another year for the next one. 3G and GPS are great, don't get me wrong, but not to a level to make me extend my contract another year for something I will not use that often (GPS). I'm happy with my current iPhone and know it will be even greater with the APP Store.

Now that I think about it, there are some features in the current SDK Beta firmware builds that have been added since March 6th, but not talked about at WWDC.

Now that I go onto the list... there's not many..

Ability to save or view images in Safari
(I think) Saving pictures from Mail (This was actually acknowledged at WWDC, thanks eplchamps0304)
Full-screen Safari
Watching Videos in landscape OR portrait mode (Thanks SlapMonkey)

I hope they have lots more in store.

And in the latest SDK, the ability to now watch videos in portrait mode as well as make video playlists... so new things are still being added up until the official release.

I for agree with you, the iPhone 3G is not enough for me to update. Like you said GPS and 3G speed would be nice, but not enough to make me spend 10 dollars extra each month for 2 years + 200 for the iphone.

Video chat again would be very nice for the next upgrade. I for one feel tethering would be the clincher for me. Having a nice 3G pipe would be awsome. Imagine in the car or on a train and your when you turn on your mac, the mac (or pc:)) automaticaly finds and connects to the iPhone in your pocket.

Mobile TV is not great these days. I don't really think it has any great features. It's a stripped down version of TV. Now this where Sling comes into play. If the iPhone supports Sling over 3G, now that would be cool.

Well Apple is going to release an iTunes Remote App for free in the App Store, so I guess that counts as a new feature.

Also, don't forget about Touch Fighter and Touch FX.

You won't be seeing anything that is a major feature, but small things like separate calendar support (the color coding) in iCal should be included after seeing the preview videos from the keynote and such.

100% Yes.

The update doesn't scream 'Worth $9.95' to me, as a general user, yet,
and it should.

Apple know it should.

R-Fly

are you joking?

yeah like ten dollars isnt worth being able to play all the new games and have access to all the third party software out there. put down the pipe, its time to re-evaluate.

I'm sure there will be some little stuff with some confidence. Remember when the 1.0 phone came out and we were going all crazy over little stuff "secrets" we found like tap the top bar to scroll safari up or double space adding periods and other stuff

Hey Guys,

Do you think apple is hiding features for the official iPhone 2.0 release? Like do you think they have their own apps in development that they will launch with the app store?

Stuff like
iWork
iChat (even though the video conferencing has been squashed)

Yep! Because they would have released the FW early for the 1st Gen iPhone users. I bet since they did release I guessing the last beta for developers they are probably making some last minute change or improvements to the FM like MMS maybe

that was insignificant
