2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme
2GB memory
500GB hard drive1
8x double-layer SuperDrive
ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB memory
$2,299.00

It's sad that, that configuration for the iMac comes with 2GB standard memory and a 500gig hard drive. Why can't Apple offer a standard 2GB, 500gig HD option with their high end MacPro? They can't hold out until MacWorld for the MacPro. It just wouldn't be right. A PRO machine coming with 1GB memory and 250gig HD is wrong and a consumer machine coming with 2GB and 500gig HD is just embarassing on Apples part. The update will come this week.

I'm not up on all the specs on Penryn, but does anyone expect that the Mac Pro RAM currently sold by third-party vendors (like macsales.com) will work with Penryn-based Mac Pros?

I'm very much looking forward to Mac Pro updates but I'm wondering if we'll have to wait for these vendors to stock new RAM if specs of new Penryn systems require different RAM.

Cheers!

No matter what happens next week, I am buying. Update or no update. I need the thing. Can't wait any longer after next week. Too many projects due.

I am getting to that point also, :(, it will come down to either I suffer long pauses and long rendering times and just stick with my macbook, or buy the mac pro....

Im not sure what memory is in it but someone here must know enough about seaburg. I'm pretty confident that apple is going to use different memory than in the current mac pro.. however, whatever kind it does use should not be difficult to find.

The new Penryn systems announced by HP this week will have the same memory that is used in current Mac Pro's:

"The xw6600 and xw8600 will use the upcoming Xeon 5200 (dual-core) and Xeon 5400 (quad-core) in twin sockets to include as many as eight cores in a single system; the smaller 45-nanometer manufacturing process for the chips improves their performance while also reducing heat and power draw."

Excellent because I kept two gb of memory from my old mac pro system before I sold it hoping it will work with the updated!

everyone.. im SOOO excited to see what happens this week.. even if it is nothing.. because then I know what to expect.. but I hope it is wednesday

It makes sense that the pro model comes stripped down. Every "pro" will want to configure it to their needs so why add stuff that most would end up taking out anyway... And at Apple prices I would be glad if it would come without 'any' RAM or HDs at all.

Eh it is probably not coming out, apple store marketing meetings are later today (sunday), but they will probably be regarding holiday stuff. The apple store online already has their holiday deco up. I sadly don't think that we will see anything till Jan... *sigh.

Yea that makes sense. So you would want just an aluminum box from Apple with no Ram and HD's in it? How the hell would Apple install Leopard or Tiger for that matter on it? The next one will come standard 2gig and at least 320 or 500 gig HD.

Uhh.... yeah, that's a good reason we won't see a Mac Pro until January......because Apple has put "holiday deco" up on the site....

Gimme a break.

The new MPs will most likely use 800mhz RAM while the current one uses 667mhz RAM. The older RAM will work, but not at the full speed of the system.

The truth is I don't really think about how much probability we have gained most of the time. The last time I checked, I think I had about four cups (just over a thousand mililitres), of probability saved so far. Since four cups is still a fairly small amount however, I really try not to think about it too much.

It best for future if save think a lot. :)

They most likely are selling the current Mac Pro's very well right now. The release of 10.5 most likely generated renewed interest in the Apple product line thereby getting a sales bump from that. Then we have the end of year purchasing cycle that occurs for tax purposes. The Mac Pro might not be selling to those who frequent MacRumors, but the rest of the world is still revolving and those that are in need instead of want are making purchases.

They *have* to bump the specs before Christmas or no one will buy them.

It's been pointed out over and over that the base spec for the Pro is better in many respects than the top model of the iMac line.

No way will they leave their top market machine below the spec of the consumer market machine for very long. Only idiots or corporations (almost the same thing), will bite at a machine like that.

Just a thought, if the Mac Pro is updated in Nov or Dec, what will Steve have to talk about at MacWorld in January?
Everything else has had a bump up recently. MacWorld might be a boring event. Wait, I had another thought. Steve, wanting to get more Windows switchers, will announce a new Mac Cube with a choice of Intel Core 2 Duo or Quad Core with desktop parts. The base model will be $899. Apple's profit for this machine will be more than the entry level iMac, so no problem if it cuts into iMac sales.
The Mac Mini will offer only the top model for $629.
With that, Steve will have a lot to talk about.

Things more likely than a Mac Pro refresh next week...

1. Sasquatch having a mochachino at your local Starbucks.

2. Area 51 being opened up as an amusement park.

3. A politician keeping a campaign promise.

4. Gas prices dropping below $3.00 a gallon.

5. David Letterman actually having a funny top ten list.

6. et. al.

LOL. Classic.

Introduce stuff we never thought possible. Surprise the world with something new, something different.

Apple is not just a computer manufacturer. Apple is an innovator trying to make as much money as they can while aiming higher than the rest in hopes to give the future the technologies we dreamed about sooner.

I hope someday
aapl > msft
goog > msft

not because I hate microsoft. just because as nations need new leaders.. so does an ever growing computer market.

How is that koolaid tasting these days?

I don't think pro consumers's would complain about increasing the HD space or RAM. Unless they wanted something fancy and extra, but in generally apple gives out good products, just overpriced for upgrading through them.

I don't think I've seen anyone go "Man, I wanted the Mac Pro but they were including too much RAM"

I would think just the opposite, Mac Pro customers I imagine are more discriminating in their purchases than imac or macbook users obviously, so if anything their sales should be slumping right now under the weight of dying technology. For me I'm just considering one computer purchase and I'm willing to hold out 'till Jan. if necessary however if i was purchasing several machines or even hundreds I think I would act the same. There's no value in paying for old technology when the new is right around the corner and the cost should be relatively the same.

Ya know, as lame as this may sound, Multimedia was pretty adamant about the idea that new Mac Pro's would be released mid November (he said 15 Nov). He seemed like he was typically pretty spot on..and let's hope he was right.
