I won’t answer for him but I’ll answer for me because I use the same widget on mine. That widget also shows other items’ level of battery charge when those other items are in use. For example, mine most often shows my AirPods’ (including their case’s) battery charge level.

I don’t understand the logic of spending money on buying a beautifully designed product, only to cover it up and never see it.
If the answer is “because it keeps it in good condition for when I sell it on”, then I become even more confused.
Why invest good money in something you’ll never see, and furthermore keeping it nice for the benefit of the next owner?

You get more money for selling pristine devices. I never sell them anyway but always use a case so it’s not something that affects me.
You also get to avoid expensive repairs or an AC+ subscription if you use protection. For some people it’s a financial decision, others it’s for customisation and, for people like me, it’s about preserving devices in “as new” condition.
I don’t even use a phone. I just telepathically send messages.
You're gonna need a case for your brain if you intend on selling it in pristine condition.
As I’ve already said, there is little logic in that argument - if we spent our lives taking that attitude, we’d get to the end of the road with no memories and a bit more cash.
What memories? It’s a handheld computer which does the same thing whether in or out a case.
Since humans are prone to error, accidental drops are a thing. I saw that approx 50 million screens are replaced each year in the USA. I’d like to use a case and a screen protector to prevent my device from being part of that statistic.
Grabbed this case from Temu for $3 to hold me over until the 17PM. I don’t drop my phone often but as a human, I am prone to error.
I use a Torras Magnetic Slim Fit, and since it gets greasy from fingerprints, I put a MagSafe wallet on top of it, and I use a screen protector as well, and it has kept my phone intact.
So if you buy an iPhone 17 Air and you put a case on it… then you don’t really enjoy the fact that it’s thin, light and whatever….

A thin phone with a thin case is still going to be thin. And for those who don’t want a case, they’ll likely get AppleCare. Problem solved.

Yeah sure but it doesn’t seams like a huge deal, the camera is not even inside the phone like the iPhone 5s or SE 1
It might not seem like a big deal to you, but it's a massive deal to some people!
Personally, I'm intrigued by the 17 Air, and can see the appeal to it. Unfortunately, the expected lack of an ultra-wide lens makes it harder to justify for me. Not that it matters at all. I'm not planning on upgrading for another couple of years.
What if Apple skimps on the tele end instead? Apple's styled themselves as the computational photography pioneer, and you can always crop in on and "CSI-enhance" a wide shot, but you can't recover a moment the lens didn't capture.
Tele is less useful to me than a wide lens is. Whatever Apple does next with their cameras has to be better than what Google did with the Pixel's zoom!
