Most of these people getting rob,get rob because they ask for it. Don't take your phone out in a subway, and if you do make sure its crowed where if someone tried to steal others can potentially help...Dont use apple issued headphones since thats a clear give away of whats in your pocket,ect...Simple steps to prevent theft. Place it in a front pocket where you can't get a hand in without KNOWING its there.

This is ridiculous. While personal security should be taken into account, no one ever asks for being robbed. Displaying expensive items in seedy neighborhoods might not be the smartest thing to do, but you can't fault the victim. 🙄

I was knocked out in a crowded area for my iPhone and spent a day in the hospital. Got to love dc 🙄

Living in fear of anything is silly, except cancer and dementia that shi*t is not fun.

I take my iPhone and iPad out everywhere, you know, because you're supposed to use them whenever you want and not be scared.

There was never a time where I was using my phone and was worried about getting beaten up and my phone taken. Last year when I was in New York I used my phone freely on the subway. I have seen videos tho of people getting phones snatched and laptops snatched right off of tables outside of coffee shops. People just have to be aware of their surroundings.

Yes that is why I got the iTaser that turns your iPhone into a high powered taser by plugging into the 30 pin connector.

I don't, but I also don't live in the hood. 😉

I am sure if I visited some questionable places, I might not feel so safe. Seems to me if you're going to get robbed, you are going to get robbed. Probably not a good idea to bust out your shiny, expensive phone in an area where there is more graffiti than paint.

Besides the thinly veiled racism of your post, I must point out that people get jumped, mugged, etc. for their iPhones in the best, not worst, neighborhoods and suburbs. I'm a crime reporter who covers chicago and the nearby suburbs. People, men and women, college kids, high school kids, older adults, get robbed of their iphones on Michigan Avenue, around the college campuses, and in the 'good' suburbs.

And to rebut another post, yes, people got mugged before the iPhone, but before the iPhone, people didn't walk around with highly desirable electronic devices worth hundreds of dollars, in plain view.

I think it really sucks that in order not to be a victim, you have to keep the phone you've wanted and that you've paid good money for in order to use and enjoy, hidden -- even wearing the earbuds would give you away and make you a target.

That is quite the concealed carry weapon..........

For instance, when I am in chicago, and if I am somewhere where I don't feel comfortable, I don't do anything to draw attention to myself like pull out an expensive phone with high resell value.

That won't prevent all situations, but it sure goes a long way to ensure that I'm not making myself a victim.

FYI, see my post here. When I am visiting relatives on the Far Northwest Side, i don't worry. But when i'm walking around or on public transportation downtown or in any of the very popular and populated north side neighborhoods, i don't let the phone out of my hand (or pocket) for a second. You may feel more comfortable in the nicer areas, but like the bank robber said when someone asked why he robs banks, 'that's where the money is,' criminals target downtown, campus areas and trendy neighborhoods because that's where the money is.

Stay safe!

How is "the hood" racist? What "race" is he referring to?

i guess you would have to ask the poster what they meant by using terms such as 'the hood,' 'ghetto,' and 'more grafitti than..'

but they certainly don't connote places where white people live. just sayin'

I guess I don't see how that implies "racism".
Here's his entire post:

When I read it, I pictured the sketchy areas in my community. Not the ethnicity of the residents.

on a serious note, if someone sucker punched me in the side of the head on a bus in front of 30 people, there would likely be 30 witnesses to me shooting at least one of them as I was in fear for my life.

I travel in busy cities a lot for business and never feel uneasy. Just beware your surroundings and if you have permit, carry and keep it handy. I often have my backpack over my shoulder and my hand on my gun in my shoulder holster concealed under my jacket.

Another example of where everyone else on the planet looks at the USA and shakes their head in disbelief.

That just scares the bejesus out of me. I am really glad I live in Canada, while we do have crime, the thought of some twitchy dude with his hand on his gun all the time on a bus or subway or wherever who is likely to go ballistic and fire in a public place because he got his iphone stolen makes me shudder.

I don't know why you think he was 'twitchy'. It isn't like he's waiting to shoot anybody for no reason. If someone attacked me for my iPhone or Pad, they're gonna get some bullets from me too. Otherwise you'll never know I'm armed.

Hasn't happened yet but I can't wait to finally get to put my concealed weapons permit to good use.

I dont carry a concealed weapon not just because I dont have a permit but because any weapon you have whether it be a knife or a handgun can potentially be used against you. i dont want to be shot in the face by my own gun because 4+ people are on top of me.

I was actually considering a white iphone but maybe i will choose a black one so it doesnt draw as much attention.

It's always at the back of my mind that I've got a £700 device in my pocket that stands out like a sore thumb (white iPhone...) so I need to be cautious. BUT I'm not paranoid about it, after all my thinking is that:

1) It's a phone not a toy, I brought it for a reason. Therefore if I need to use my phone then I'll use it. However, I should just be cautious of my surroundings at certain times of the day, because lets be honest, no one wants to be in a potential mugging situation.

2) I'm paying for insurance, if my well-being was being genuinely threatened then they can have the damn phone. I would rather escape the situation than be jumped by a bunch of thugs.

3) It's a smartphone, I can have it tracked down within minutes for the police to deal with, and if not it can be locked down, remote wiped then officially blocked from connecting to any network.

I do envy you Americans that. I would hate to be in a situation where I would need to use a weapon, and even the thought of potentially needing it is a little scary...but better to be protected then not I guess.

FWIW, I didn't necessarily only mean WHERE I am. If I am uncomfortable in general, with the people, the location, the time of day, etc etc etc.

I've been approached by some shady characters near or on Michigan, in areas that most would consider "good" neighborhoods. That would make me think twice about flashing any expensive gadgets in front of them.

I have similar stories in other "good" areas in other cities too.

So I don't base my comfort level just based on the areas I'm in. Mass transit makes it too easy for trouble to travel.

I often check my pocket regularly to see if it's still there and at times get that split second sinking feeling in my stomach when I think it's not there.

I have this feeling all the time, but as i keep it in my front pocket i'm not too worried about someone taking it, as myself leaving it somewhere and forgetting about it.

The other day i went in the grocery store to get food, and i forgot my phone in the car and had about a good 10 second freak out, then realized it was just in the car locked up.

To answer OP's question, no. But then again i don't put myself in many situations where i could be mugged for my phone and no one else is around.
