Same portability for you. Not me. 13.3 is crap for portability in my use case, which is school and small desks. The 13.3 takes up the whole space the twelve is much better for me. Plus at nearly half the weight I don't think twice about taking it.

What about the sluggishness though? I mean seriously it's not bad in and of itself but if you're use to better than it's hard to go back. That's all I'm saying. And yea it seems right for you regarding portability.

Finally had a chance to play with one in the Apple store today. They only had the 1.1Ghz version but I confirmed it was running 10.10.3. I immediately noticed what the OP is referring to in terms of lacking "snappiness". Just navigating around the System Preferences and other OS X screens, there was a tiny but very noticeable stutter or delay. I walked over to the 11" MBA 1.6Ghz which was also running 10.10.3 and noticed no such delay. Disappointing.

What's disappointing is (1) that Apple is still flogging MBAs with displays that have 1/4 the pixels of the retina laptops and (2) that Apple hasn't figured out how to make OS X run without some lag on the retina laptops. My 13" rMBP has all of the same UI issues that the rMB has - which are, at least to me, essentially unnoticeable with transparency turned off.

Not true. I could buy a quadrillion MB if I wanted. But it's too sluggish for me. It's about the same portability.

And really, that is the point. There is no real portability advantage here (as there isn't between the MBP 13 and the MBA). But hey... they (Apple) gotta justify it SOMEHOW. And Apple-maniacs gotta have some sad line to give you as to why they bought a compromised product.

If one's ability to carry around a laptop is only enabled by getting the new MacBook, then one really needs to look into getting a bit more exercise.

You really have to own the rMP to appreciate how much more portable it is than the other MacBooks. It truly is like an iPad in terms of being able to move it around easily.

Oh stop this nonsense about needing to 'go to the gym'. Wanting a more portable computer has nothing to do with physical capability. It is convenience. You can fit more things into a backpack or you can more easily put it on an airline tray table.

Saying someone needs to exercise more is just stupid.

I agree it is very portable, I bough one this eve from BB. 1.1 256 space grey...

I am still on the fence, I'm going to spend a few days to decide. In intel power gadget the GPU is going up and down and CPU temp jumping 20oC + during hurts of activity. Highest temp is ~85 oC. During idle it stays around 35-40oC and web browsing around ~45-55oC. This CPU and GPU is very stressed compared to my rMBP... and thats just during web browsing and UI tasks :(

UI is surprisingly good, fluid but if doing anything in background that can change easily.

I got a new 2015 13" rMBP and it has zero UI lag as shown here. Perhaps it is a general problem but it's not on all retina devices. Or mine is an extremely rare specimen. I didn't see any lag on the ones at the store either.

This laptop runs warmer, both CPU and case temp, than my rMBP and my previous air 11 inch...

I'm so torn on this device, I like it but its not quite there... its as if i'm saying just put up with the weight of the rMBP for now until the rMB improves next year etc

I had first iPhone and first iPad when they come out... and I was happy, for some reason I don't feel the same about this notebook... Ive never bought an apple device and felt like this before...

I was between the new Macbook and the 13" rMBP and at the end I went with the latter, mainly because of its better performance and bigger screen. I love the MacBook design but I decided to wait for the next generation. Apple is certainly on the right path with the new Macbook and they will eventually fix all issues. Now, is it worth to get the first generation? Probably not.

Weight is a big factor for many people!

Posts like these that claim there is no difference in portability between various Mac and non-Mac laptops are missing the point.

The size and weight of a laptop is big deal to a lot of people, and depends entirely on individual circumstances, usage and preferences.

For example:

How much do you carry your laptop? From your bedroom to your lounge? From your car to the elevator? For a 15 minute walk from the train? All day between meetings? For days on end on a location shoot in the mountains?

All of this matters!

I have a rMBP 15 which I upgraded to from an MBA 13. In a laptop or shoulder bag, the weight difference is noticeable. After a day of carrying, my shoulder is sore. In a backpack with my lunch, a drink, a jacket, some books & papers, disk drives, power supply etc., the weight difference between rMBP 15 and MBA 13 is less noticeable - because I'm already carrying 3 times the weight of the computer, so the percentage difference is hardly noticeable.

If I am carrying the laptop by itself between meetings in my office building, or to the coffee shop, they the difference in weight is significant. I can't easily hold the rMBP 15 open in one hand to show something to someone when standing up; I need a table or to sit down and use it on my lap. The rMB can be held up without effort with two fingers.

I have colleagues who have "workstation laptops" - quad-core i7's with 32GB RAM, 2 SSDs, and 17" screens. These machines weigh 7-8 pounds, have a power supply the size of a brick, and they often have a wheelie-bag to take to move them around to avoid back strain

It's horses for courses.

So to clarify, the rMBP 13 or Asus ultrabook is not "just as portable" as the rMB, in either absolute or subjective terms. They are less portable. Maybe not *much* less portable for you, but that is subjective.

You may not think the compromise between weight and power / ports is worth it to you. And this is absolutely OK! But please bear in mind that other people have different priorities and values, and it is their right to have these without criticism.

Apple have done a good job designing an extremely lightweight computer, and will almost certainly sell a lot of them. The design lessons will benefit other product lines in due course. I would personally love my rMBP to have the same features but weigh a lot less!

Exactly. If 1.46 pounds in extra weight makes it not portable then a gym pass would be the wisest investment. Not a MacBook OR MacBook Pro.

One guy here said he has a 15" already. In that case a rMB might be OK bc I don't see why anyone one would want a 13" and 15"

But otherwise, it's 13" all the way.

I think you should be required to carry the eight pound laptop I had over ten years ago. It's not that much heavier and if you complain you certainly just need to lift some weights to get ready for it.

That is your punishment for saying such a stupid thing.

I disagree. It was a very intelligent comment. Now, 8 pounds is much more than either weights.

So, your analogy fails.

I really hope they do ensure some features of the rMB go to the rMBP.

What sluggishness ? I don't have any. I had minor UI lag on a late 2013 13.3 macbook pro even occasional lag on a 15.4. Using safari and just moving around in the UI i don't have any lag i didn't have on those other devices.

I don't plan on pushing this thing hard so I doubt ill have any major sluggishness. Other threads cite being able to game at a basic level so I think I'm good.

To address the weight issue, when you have a backpack full of crap a thinner lighter laptop helps vs a heavy one that i would just end up leaving at home.

I wonder if everyone will be arguing in this thread until V2 comes out next year lol. :D:p

Which will translate into.... "Does anyone feel the V2 is not worth the upgrade" I kid, i kid :)

Interesting that you and others here seem to feel the need to have a "right" answer - a universal and indsputable truth. It is a ridiculous endeavour. Why are you trying so hard to force everyone to agree with you? Why does there have to be a single option that is the best for everyone?

As to 1.46 lbs, well that means you could *almost* lug around two rMB's for the one rMBP. The volume space savings in a bag is just as large. So you could pretty much fit two rMB's in the same space as one rMBP is a computer bag. Seems you are not speaking from experience and just contemplating numbers?

So is my setup completely wrong, having a Mac mini as my stationary, an 11" MBA as my work machine, an iPad as my personal computing device, and a 6+ as my phone? Or is there an overlap that I have done that violates your ideal of the ultimate universal ideal? Perhaps in your ideal world having a 6+ negates the need for an iPad entirely? Or maybe the absolute ideal truth is that a 6+ is too large for a phone, and that one should have a regular 6 instead?

Also, why are certain people constantly comparing the rMB to the MBP. You may as well compare a Porsche to a Honda. The rMB was never touted as a heavy productive processing machine. Simply because it's not and MBP owners wanted it to be...doesn't make it correct or valid. Again, the rMB was never advertised to be a replacement for any MBP laptop model.

Which Porsche and which Honda? I would take an S2000 over several Porsches of the same model year, and the S2000 is a bit cheaper too :)

Apple Retina laptops bar the 15" rMBP with dedicated graphics card all have UI lag, its horrible and not acceptable for the price Apple charge for them. Im not sure if its software or hardware but Apple need to fix it before they get my money. MBA all the way for me.

Trust me your machine has the UI lag, im yet to see one that doesn't.

Exactly! There seem to be a few zealots around here. This kind of person will always assume that:

<semi-political rant>

You want the wrong computer
You are ignorant
You live in the wrong country
You drive the wrong car
You live with the wrong person
You speak the wrong language
You follow the wrong religion - or consider that Windows isn't too bad

There will only accept you if have unswerving allegiance to the Caliphate of Macistan.

The only good side is that hopefully they don't cut off your head and blow up your house if you dare to offer an alternative viewpoint

The 1.1 I have is very snappy for basic tasks. However I do not see much speed improvement over my early 2011 MBP with 8gb of ram and 256 SSD. I might be returning the new MB as much as I LOVE the design and screen. I foresee an updated macbook Pro coming soon I hope.
