OK. I will take your word for it since you know my computer better than I do.

Thanks, I fixed that. rMBP. I have problems typing now and then.

Feel free to have a look at the one of many threads about the issue. The problem is real and affects ALL rMBP's. Its not like im a pc guy having a dig, i love apple laptops but the retina machines are rubbish.

Well, since the MBAs are also clearly rubbish, does that mean we need to stick with Minis and MPs?

Well the MBA's don't have any fundamental issues so no they are not rubbish. They have a tn display but it does its job and it has zero IR or light bleed issues. Oh and the UI is buttery smooth.

This is the first time I've ever taken an apple product back. I was tempted to stay with it and hope for the best... maybe a software update or something... but its troubling when you spend over 1 grand on a device and resign to hoping for the best...

One thing a software update for sure wouldn't fix is the facetime camera :(

I most certainly know how you feel.

I've bought a tremendously high volume of Apple computers, iPads, Pods, and Phones not to mention all the smaller peripheral items. They smile big when I walk into my local Apple Store.

Being just five miles from home it's a very risky place for my wallet...ha..ha..:)

It's buttery smooth because those piece of **** displays, which were an embarrassment in 2008, have only a couple of dozen pixels. Viewing angles are ****, gamma and color accuracy are **** and can't be adequately rectified with calibration, and the resolution's mediocre. Other than that, yeah, they are great.

AN iPod touch from the 2012 refresh has a better webcam than the new MacBook :(

That another embarrassment

No its buttery smooth because the drivers and hardware work well together. The rMBP has more then enough grunt to run a retina display but Apples drivers are rubbish and to many people praise them anyway so Apple have no need to fix the problem.

But the screen still sucks. I've lived with mine for a long time (2010) and there is no way I'd spend any money on a computer with a similar display again. It is an amazing embarrassment that Apple still sells a machine with such an atrocious display.

Give me Retina or give me death! :)

Don't know what to tell you. I am not seeing any of the lag issues that I have read about or seen in youtube videos.

I love that. Hope you don't mind if I use it.

I assure you its there, you don't have a "special" machine that is exempt from the driver issues, some people don't notice it, if you don't see it thats great :) Unfortunately many of us are sensitive to frame drops and it is unbearable.

I have owned the rMB, the rMBP, and the air. All 2015 models. The best of them all? The Air. It is the only one without UI lag b.c it does not have to drive the retina display. That may not be the most important thing to everyone, but it is a fact.

The rMBP would be second in terms of UI lag, and I would even say performance b.c the lag effects apps too.

At times the rMB runs smooth and looks great. Then there are other times where it is a laggy mess. I made this video last night. It is not an anomaly. I experienced it on two MacBooks I owned, and I can create the issue in store. Only 4 spaces and a few tabs

Thanks. This is the video that's made me decide to wait. For that money, I need a buttery smooth experience, at least when doing simple things.

So many of the people who were all originally excited about the new rMB are evidently not going to buy one.

Too great of expectations? It doesn't have to be perfect for me.

My video is far from perfect. That is 4 spaces and 3 safari tabs

Yeah it's not about perfection, more about our expectations that the CPU/GPU could handle that retina screen for the basics, but at times it seems to be definitely struggling.

I guess we were excited because anytime someone expressed the above doubt, it was usually scorned.

There have been plenty of people who are quite pleased with it. I'm sure I will be as well. You can wait for generation 2. I will be happy with a retina screen in the small form factor now and upgrade later.

I think it will be quite useable .

Its your internet speed or its all in your mind. For fun I set my MacBook up on my desk and opened tons of things at the same time as my Late 2013 3.4GHz iMac. Web pages loaded the same time on both as did most apps. PS CS6 opened way faster (about 5 seconds faster) on the MacBook which is odd. Anyhow, with web browsing, opening apps and streaming video, its just as fast as my iMac.
Why would you expect your iMac to open apps faster?

Will Skylake graphics improve matters?

Is the expectation that the next gen Skylake-Y / Core-M CPUs will improve the GPU significantly, and reduce screen rendering issues?

Intel HD4000 graphics can run the retina display, the 5300 is more than enough power for the job. These stutters are clearly a software issue as even (some) MBPs running 10.10 have it but don't on 10.9 as many on this forum have pointed out.

It's one thing to wait for the next revision, but don't think for a second that the 5300 isn't up to the task of running a retina display. That's utter nonsense.

The 5300 is actually quite weak (only a 5w sku i think) but yes it should be enough to power a retina display and it is driver issues thats causing the stutters.

All I'm getting at is that the days of GPU's struggling to drive just a retina display are years gone.

Give me Retina or give me death! :)

At the same time - I don't really find it a big deal.

I have an 11" air and a 15" retina - sure the retina is sharper, but I do think it's greatness is blown out of proportion.

I adjust to the air very quickly, and actually prefer using the air. The 15" retina has become an "at the table laptop" and pretty much sits at a table only getting used for periodic music recording.

My wife's finishing her phd, and even with the retina right there, she chooses to type away/research on her 11" air..

So..I think for some of us - we see the difference but don't really care.

A nuanced point - esp. "these wild retina days"

All in all, I follow your reasoning and your points of view a very long way, and I would do the same as your wife does.

Personally, I would have concluded with a slightly modified last sentence: So..I think for some of us - we see the difference but don't really care that much. (That in italics added as a modifier by me.) :)
