Isn't NFC both a developer and consumer thing? As ChristianJapan said above: "Less objects in my wallet and back pack". I most certainly believe Apple has the power to make NFC a success for consumers.

It will be very big, eventually, but the percentage of retail and people who have any clue as to phone wallets now is tiny. I do expect they will include NFC in IP5, but not sure it qualifies as a "big" consumer thing now.

The fact that they have Passbook in the beta is encouraging, but talk to any large scale restaurant owner (for example) about the difficulty in integrating such technology into their existing propritary hardware today.

Not really...Apple already announced the biggest new feature for iOS 6, Maps.

Any other features would be exclusive to the new iPhone...

Airdrop, Bluetooth file sharing, and a "file-like system so you can upload documents on an iOS device.
Today's bluetooth announcement certainly suggests we might be getting both. Frankly, I'm surprised they haven't brought Airdrop functionality to iOS devices. It's wireless networking that even an idiot can do. (Versus Windows, where if there's an XP device involved, God help you.)

+1 on inductive charging. That would be a wow feature. I just checked amazon: first inductive charger is only 12€. So it's def. not too expensive.
Airdrop and Bluetooth filesharing would be OK but nothing exciting.

But I honestly can't think of anything really exciting myself

Major unannounced features will probably be tied to new iPhone.

Historically...

iOS 2:
  • GPS in Maps

iOS 3:
  • Tap to autofocus
  • Voice Control
  • Compass
  • Nike+

iOS 4:
  • FaceTime

iOS 5:
  • Face detection and video stabilization
  • Siri and Voice dictation
  • AirPlay video mirroring
  • 1080p video playback

As for iOS 6, more capable Passport and NFC (Bluetooth Link) could be one of the surprises.

I was thinking of updating my post with a list like this. Thank you for the knowledge :)

Apple wont release NFC! Apple will promote the larger screen and improved camera. We all know Apple holds back features!!

Well, they have already. Your phone backs up to iCloud, downloads emails and even Newsstand publications while asleep with the screen off. Power Nap is an iOS feature brought to the desktop.

Woops I should have been more specific-- I meant downloading updates to apps and possibly iOS firmware.

It will be fast charging! I'm pretty sure the old dock connector can't handle high current->see the iPad 3 charging times; the limit is the connector.

New dock connector -> fast charging!

And i hope for NFC, but thats a feature for next years iPhone.

With all the credit card processors on board with Android. Apple would be wise to be on board as well. Then again they may wait in order to 'perfect' the implementation. *shrug*

Still, old devices getting Passbook, and the new iPhone getting an enchanced Passbook with NFC as the killer feature seems certainly plausible.

iOS 4 was Multitasking

iOS 5 was Siri

iOS 6 is Maps

Wrong. They're talking about features that weren't announced when the new iOS was debuted. Multitasking was shown at the Apple iOS 4 preview event in April 2010. FaceTime was the "One more thing" for WWDC of that year

Powernap? Isn't that basically what Do Not Disturb mode is? Or maybe I don't fully understand what Powernap does since it doesn't work on my Late 2011 MBP with SSD :/

It's basically what iOS has been able to for a long time - receive notifications while idle. Do Not Disturb just receives those notifications without disturbing the user.

Applications will be able to let other applications run them - authorized explicitly - to support things like screen sharing in a webex conference...

Oops, misread title.

In that case

WWDC 2010 - FaceTime
iPhone 4S Event - Siri

I really don't know...I dont think there will the "one more thing". Both in the iPad 3 event and 2012, Apple didn't announce anything special.

I think the biggest thing they will probably show off is the iPad mini.

iOS 6 is pretty much done, if it hasn't been announced, its going to be exclusive for the iPhone 5 which kinda sucks but wuteva.

NFC isn't huge now, and probably won't be, until Apple releases a phone with it.

don't think so, looks like apple is taking a similar approach to

1 year: great phone
then: good software with small phone upgrade
then: good phone with small software upgrade etc

iOS 6 has privacy features, decline call with auto text message, 3d maps, passbook wallet, and do not disturb mode - that's about it :)

Maybe we'll finally see Panorama mode in Camera.app it's been part of the OS since around iOS 4 (?) but Apple has yet to activate it for end users.

I don't think Apple will do inductive charging. It doesn't really solve a problem, as you have to have a pad plugged into the wall anyway, and you'd have to bring the bulky thing along if you wanted to charge. I think they'll skip it and jump to true wireless charging when that arrives.

I posted this in another thread, but this WSJ article leads me to believe we will not be seeing NFC this year.

Maybe the new iPhone-only feature will take advantage of the larger screen in some way. Group FaceTime chat? Would make sense if they upgrade it to a FaceTime HD camera.

Don't know but I have to say that the 4S totally surprised me by what it was really like to pick it up and hold it. I thought I knew "everything" about its features but having it in hand made me very happy I had decided to order it. It was like a personal "... and one more thing..." when I had taken it from the box for the first time. :)

So I suppose I'd be almost looking for a similar experience the next time. I haven't decided yet whether to upgrade because... well because rumors are rumors!
