I just I just don't get it... do people really not read the words in these posts?? He clearly explained why the first photo looked that way. Hold any LCD screen at an angle and you'll see what his photo showed. It's not light leak!

NJ, Doug does not know what he is talking about. In fact, lightleak is often more viewable to the human eye from an angle. Do you not see how the brightness is the most at the lower left corner of the screen and is dissipates as it fade towards the center. This is not the fault of the camera, this is the camera picking up light from the iPad. This is called lightleak, bleed, mura, etc. You can also see this in the top left corner as well. You can obviously see where the corner of the screen is compared to the bezel HENCE lightleak ladies and gentleman.

I am finding it funny......here's a shot over something lighter in color :p I guess my iPad defies the Physics of no screens being perfect....does that make mine IMperfect due to it's perfection? ;)

Thank you Doug, although the picture is blurry you can clearly zoom in and see those pixels in the digital image that that are bright and start from the lower left corner and fade towards the middle of the screen. This same thing happens in the upper left corner of the screen. This is the common place for lightleak on iPad's.

Doug, your screen is fine but suffers from some lightleak and is revealed in the pixels of your blurry picture. All of us have some as it is a flaw in LCD technology. I'm glad you love your device it is great is it not.

If that's light leak compared to the REAL leak I had when I replaced for this one.....I'm 100% fine with that :)

Let me tell you....I don't know HOW I lived without an iPad before they released them

So am I, but this is what is called lightleak. Yours is nowhere as bad as many I have seen but yours still suffers from the same limits we all suffer from. There either is lightleak or there is not. It's not a matter of real but to what degree. Anyway, I'm glad we cleared that up. Enjoy your iPad. ;)

Those pictures show how terrible your screen his. Hell, even a netbook has more even backlightning, and a higher res display. For a $499+ product, keep getting it exchanged until perfection, or get a refund. Thats terrible

Alright. I just wanted to post these pictures for those saying that this problem isn't noticeable during normal use. For me, normal use is watching movies from my home server, Netflix, and TV shows on ABC, in bed, before I go to sleep. The problem absolutely impacts normal usage.

Here are two examples, at 50% brightness, on a normal 16:9 movie. As you can see, the light leak is so bad, it bleeds into the actual movie.

For reference, these photos were taken with a Nikon D80, with a 50mm, 1.8 prime, manual settings for most accurate exposure and WB. So, it's not an illusion created by incorrect settings on a point and shoot camera. In fact, it looks much worse in real life! These pictures actually downplay the problem. The high rate of compression doesn't help either.

When held in portrait I've got about 3 spots of light bleed.. I see this is the same area most ipads have it.. Seems more common to have it on some level than to have none at all. Every iphone and ipod touch ive owned has this same problem on some level as well. Honestly, it doesn't bother me one bit. How often am I in a completely dark room focusing on that 1cm of barely visible light bleed? In normal use it is impossible to notice.. A total non-issue for me, allowing me to enjoy my new toy instead of ocd'ing out over nothing.;p

I think all iPads have some. It's just varying degrees.

It's funny though, I have a 3GS that is absolutely PERFECT. No bleeding, dead pixels, etc.

Im sure perfect screens exist, you just gotta do a number of exchanges to find one. ;p

I'm totally fine with the quality of the iPad, but thats just me. The colors and contrast are unreal... Total love

I agree. I love my iPad. Honestly, I would never have thought I'd like it as much as I do. It's an amazing piece of tech.

Same, my iMac has been getting no attention lately ;>

I was so close to getting a mba but im glad i went with this instead, its the funnest apple product I've ever owned.

Well, today is the day of truth. I just got an email from Apple telling me that my new iPad is in stock. I'm going to be leaving in an hour. I'll update with the results.

Well, just got back from the Apple store. I had a very pleasant experience-- the Genius was very nice, and even gave me a new power adapter, free of charge.

The new unit shows less backlight bleeding, but it's still not optimal. This one, however, has no dead/stuck pixels, which makes me happy. So, I think I'm going to stick with this one. I'm starting to be able to live with the issue. And, I don't want to take any more inventory away from others on the waiting list.

I think ALL iPads are going to have bleeding to some extent, whether the user knows how to look for it or not.

Everyone keeps saying their screens are perfect, but none are willing to back up those claims with pictures. In my experience, I've gone through three different iPads, all different stores, all different shipments. And every single time, the backlight bleeding is in the exact same places, with roughly the same intensities.

I've also checked iPads from three different people. All of them have the exact same problem.

I'm sorry, but the only logical conclusion I can draw is that they ALL have the problem to some degree. If anyone can prove me wrong, please do.

It's hard to do the screen justice when you take pictures.

I have no bleeding, period. Just accept it and live with it. Or not, it's all up to you.

I got my ipad today and noticed I have this issue as well, but its pretty minor. No where near as bad as the op. It's not enough of a issue for to return it.

Don't seem to have dead pixels or yellowing though, from checking it out.

It's hard for some to come to terms with the reality of the situation but we accept you... :D
