Honestly, I think those who are claiming perfect screens, in reference to no backlight bleed, are not performing the test correctly. I noticed, for the most part, the bleeding is almost identical between my wife's and my own. Same levels and just slightly different areas of the screen.

I think you're correct. That's why I have been asking for pictures.

I was just going to live with the bleed, until I found the dead pixel. That pushed me over the edge. I'll see what they'll do for me tomorrow.

I've got a 64gig 3G. There is a little backlight bleeding, but not enough to notice without a close look on a totally black image. It isn't anywhere near as bad as yours. I'll try to take an image tomorrow to see what you think.

I think you should get another and another until you get what you want. That stuck pixel looks more like a blotch than a pixel. I remember I sent my iBook G3 back 5 times for motherboard issues (those were more severe than dead pixels—the screen would die out and flash ribbons of color).

Just looking for a little guidance. But first, here's a little backstory…

I received my 64GB 3G iPad last Friday. Upon taking it out of the box, I noticed some nasty backlight bleeding on all sides of the device (with the right side being the worst). Immediately, I took it to the Apple store. Long story short, they replaced it with a brand new one.

I took the new one home, examined it quickly, and applied a screen protector. Later in the day, when I finally got around to using it, I noticed that the brightness was reduced to around a quarter (I think the Genius did this on purpose when I asked him to step into the back room and check the backlight in darkness). When I turned the backlight to about 50-55% (my preferred brightness), it became apparent that this iPad had the same problem, almost in the same places as the original.

Hoping that this was a fluke, I asked my dad if I could check his out. Sure enough, he has some terribly uneven backlighting as well. His is not as severe as mine, but bad nonetheless.

I called Apple and explained the situation. A day later, they called me back after speaking to the "engineers." They said that, if the backlight bleeding wasn't visible in normal room lighting, there was nothing they could do. Apparently, that's the "yardstick" they use to measure the problem. I even sent them these two photos, but they didn't change their assessment.

Anyway, I'm considering trying another exchange, but I was wondering what my odds were of getting an iPad with the same problems… I've heard many people on this forum say they've gotten perfect specimens. However, I've not seen any pictures of their flawless iPads. So, if you think you have a perfectly even backlight, please post some pictures. That will make me much more eager to return mine and eat the cost of the screen protector!

Is the backlight issue causing what looks like yellow on the screen?

I do agree that not everyones screen is perfect otherwise people would gladly volunteer pics, and of course Apple is infamous for not admitting a problem with their products (remember the yellow iphone screens which ended up being a way to make the colors warmer) which I think the vendor used the wrong type of lcd or something but it would cost them beau coup money to replace so they went the way of stating that they wanted the colors to be warmer.

They need better quality control, because for some of us (mine has not even left the factory yet), there aren't apple stores close by so we either have to take a day to drive to one if there is a horrible defect like a stuck pixel(s) or deal with the whole deal with them sending a box (which I don't know why they dont send the replacement along with said box so you can just ship the defective model back).

I have to say so far my screen appears perfect. And I have OCD about these things,:D so if there was an issue I'd be seeing it.

After replacing mine because of two dead pixels that I have not noticed at first or maybe they just came later, I got a perfects screen now.

I bought a 16GB Wi-Fi on launch day and it's screen is about as perfect as it can be. Probably the first Apple product I've owned that was perfect out of the box.

Just to be clear: All LCDs will have some level of backlight bleeding when displaying black at full brightness. My iPhone does. My MacBook Pro does, 15" and 13". My 24" Cinema Display does. Of course the iPad will have a little as well.

Mine's perfect! Zero bleed.

mine is perfect too because i never checked for bleed or dead pixels to begin with. and with my fingerprints all over it it doesn't matter anyway.

in general the screen is gorgeous. i could not see any flaw so i'm happy.

with my MBP it's different. there I want the screen to be as perfect as possibl;e. o i checked if I had dead pixels and I woyuld have exchanged it if the dead pixels was in the center or if there were to many of them.

To see your backlight bleed set brightness to 50% & download the black image in the link previously provided. Go to photos and set black image to full screen. You must be in a very dark room to do this correctly. I'm going to keep both of mine as it is only noticeable under very specific conditions.

I do agree that every screen is going to suffer some backlight bleed as the technology is still lacking in certain respects.

"dark room with an all black screen"
I keep hearing this... If you have to try this hard to find light bleed then it obviously isnt that much of a problem!
I haven't noticed light bleed during my normal use and Im not gonna go checking for it either. To me my screen is perfect.
When people look for something, they will find it.
If you dont see the light bleed during normal use then give it up. How often do you stare at just a blank black screen on your iPad!? I know I never do.
I haven't noticed any light bleed while watching movies either so maybe I just got lucky. My blacks seem as black as they can be.

In my case, I didn't have to "look" for it. I simply watched a 16:9 movie, in my bedroom at night. It was immediately obvious. No hunting for me.

I just got back from the Apple store. Thankfully, I was paired up with an awesome Genius. He took the iPad into the back, and returned laughing. He said, "I don't mean to laugh, but that falls well short of the "ultimate movie watching experience" that Apple claims. We'll get you a new one."

Unfortunately, they didn't have any in stock, so he put my name on a list to be notified when they come in. Throughout the entire process, he was very apologetic and helpful.

So, I'm hopeful that I can get this situation figured out. I left feeling very confident that they would help me get the best possible unit.

Nothing that is ever created will be perfect, but if you have a friend and he has an ipad and you hold yours next to his and yours looks like someone pissed all over it or like light is just bleeding out from the side of the screen and his is barely noticeable, and your friend notices and says dude yours looks awful, i think that might help open your eyes.

Some people just do not want to see. The closest Apple store is 2 hours from here. When I get mine, if it has anything wrong with it, I will take a day, and go get it changed out. For the cost of the device, it should be as close to perfect as possible. Piss yellow displays, dust under the screen, defective glass (someone had a bubble or something in their glass), bent or damaged metal edges, etc, should not be happening. They must have ramped up production and quality went out the window for quantity.

I wholeheartedly agree. I'm not expecting a 100% perfect screen. I'm sure that screens have some level of backlight bleeding. But, I think mine was a severe case. And, that has been echoed by people on this forum, and the Genius in the store.

I don't know why I have to settle for less than others. I paid the same amount of money as everyone else, and I deserve a comparable product. All I want is an iPad with a lesser degree of bleeding, and no dead pixels. I don't think that's a particularly tall order.

I received my 64 3G on Friday, but didn't get to open it until yesterday :( When I did, there was a dead pixel right smack in the middle of the screen...drove me bananas. I called up my store and they swapped it out, no questions asked. The new one seems to be fine, no complaints yet! :)

I'm surprised they had stock to give you. Every store in Wisconsin is sold out. :(

It looks like my ipad has a string of christmas lights around the screen when viewing in a darker area, with a black background.

I've had 2 iPads and I was impressed with the consistent quality comparing the 2. When you have 2 side by side it's easier to see inconsistencies. I saw no obvious quality differences.
I did notice a 3G on display in the Apple store had the 3g black bar piece was a little raised compared to the one next to it tho. but overall I've seen the same uniformity in quality in the touch iPod and the iPhones I've had too.
It's good to know Apple does switchouts, not the case with some other brands.

Here is the replacement I got after the one that I had that leaked BAD.... On the bottom of the screen, that is not light leak....that is angle and the camera's catching any light it can.....
