honestly why does this bother anyone?
I'm on the phone in a quiet room, walking and moving around, bending to pick something up from the floor, turning my head left and right while moving, and i hear the button clicking against the bezel.

Less of a problem to me is recording a quiet video and hearing the clicks come through in the video even louder than they are in person.

The kind of problem that isn't a big deal. And one that I'd be embarrassed for anyone who makes a big deal about it. Because really, it's not worth it (life etc..). I could live with it but I returned two 5s phones because it's a bit **** that this was the case after paying 1100AUD and I had the option of going back to a usable iPhone 4.

On mine it is coming from the power button. When I hold the power button (without pressing down) it would stop. This is definitely a defect.

I just got a new 5S today. I have the same problem as you do.

The power button is loose, and rattles as it moves in the cutout it fits into. Just tapping on it with my finger causes it to make a rattling sound. A $750 device sounds like it costs $7... shame on Apple for this. They set customer's expectations very high: Advertising that they manufacture the most precise gear available, but they don't deliver.

On this particular phone the volume and mute buttons are pretty solid, and don't have much play therefore they are almost silent (except for the normal sound that happens when the buttons are pressed.

Not sure if I am going to exchange it yet. It bugs me, but I know that many of the phones have the same problem, and I am not really into playing the "lottery" with this phone.

so is everyone still experiencing rattling or what? I'm concerned that the sleep button is gonna break on me like it did on my 4

I've been violently shaking the 5S randomly, and cannot hear a single tick... I remember my 5 rattled a bit, but the 5S is quiet...:)

Now that I seen this I shakes my a little and mines is real loud, it's a iPhone 5s AT&T Gold 16gb, my sounds like it's either coming from the top like the near the power button or inside by the camera?

Yes, that's the sound we are speaking about ... But it's not supposed to be very loud

Who shakes their phone like that normally.
If it bothers you that much take it to Apple.

People that take videos when they're out and about shake their phones like that - particularly when following around active little kids. The button also makes a weird noise when releasing the switch while powering up/down the phone. Obviously it's the power button that is loose.

It does bother me, and I did take it to Apple. The replacement does the same thing - actually the video is the of the replacement phone. Apple says that the phone shouldn't be doing that. Called AT&T, and they also stated that something was wrong. They suggested swapping it out until I got one that worked properly.

Funny thing is that the display in the AT&T store makes the same noise.
Additionally, I tested one table of phones at the Apple store, and the phone except two made the same noise. I spoke to the team leader, and he was "surprised" (his words). His personal phone didn't make the rattling sound.

He explained it as probably being the "tab" that holds the switch in place, or the hole that the button fits in as being milled too big. The next time I spend money on a phone, I will vote with my pocket, and go elsewhere if the phone isn't up to par.

For the record: It's the power button that is loose.

"We're surrounded by anonymous, poorly made objects," Ive said. "It's tempting to think it's because the people who use them don't care — just like the people who make them. But what we've shown is that people do care."

He goes on to explain that consumers who buy Apple products don't simply like an iPhone or Mac because it looks pretty, but because "they care about things that are thoughtfully conceived and well made."

No manufacturer has a 100% quality rate. My anonymous things are generally made. However a phone has become the equivalent of life support so that every nuance is noted.

I've tested more than 130 iPhones and all of them has this rattling sound. And definitely it's not a loose button. It's something inside (or below) ...

Since it doesn't affect the user experience in any way, I can't call it a defect.

On mine, and the ones I've tested in store, it's a loose power button. Applying a small amount of pressure to it, stops the rattle.

Is it possible the rattle that you are hearing is the camera? My phone also does that, but it is not as loud as the power button.

I dont think its the camera, since if I push the power button while shaking the iPhone the rattle sound disappears.
I really think it's something behind the power button, internally, since the power button itself isn't loose.

My iPhone 4 was perfect and even now, three years later and in my father's possession, NONE of the buttons are loose.
The iPhone 5 I have, however, is a different story. Both volume buttons were loose out of the box and the power/wake button is now starting to get loose. Shoddy.
If I shake the phone I hear a rattle, but if I lightly hold the power and volume buttons whilst shaking the phone, there is no rattle. Certainly where my phone is concerned, the rattling is due to the buttons moving around.

My iPhone 5S is a week 49 made by Foxconn (F2).
I didn't realise I had a problem until reading this thread.
It RATTLES when shaken vigourously!
Maybe we can form some sort of support group or something?
