that simply isn't correct. the normal silver SS does scratch like crazy but as you said it buffs out. the space black SS uses a special coating that is very, very, very different. it is as scratch resistant as anything apple has ever made. in a year of wearing my watch and beating it up badly the black coating doesn't have a single mark, not one. there HAVE been people that had scratched it in the rarest of rare circumstances and if it does happen (and again, its highly unlikely) you will NOT be able to polish it out like the normal SS. the question the first poster is asking which hasn't be adequately addressed yet is: does the new gold color scratch more or less than the base SS color, and if it does scratch can you buff it out. we can't assume either based on the fact the space black is so different from the normal SS, maybe the gold is different too?
People have reported that it is a coating process similar to the Space Black process, so it's not gold under the surface, but silver.

This is the SS gold demo set in apple store...

Even i wipe it that big mark in the middle of the screen still appears...

Probably still too early to tell. I’ve had mine for a very short time. Yesterday was the first full day of wearing it.

I did have to take it off later when I went to get a mani-pedi after work. I kept it in my wristlet during that time. It got jostled around in there for a little bit, but it came out unscathed. It was in a small compartment, no keys or anything that could scratch it was inside. All went well.

We’ll see when I start to wear bracelets with it. I think that’s how my Series 3 SS got its first small abrasion (too minor to be a scratch) on its underside.

Thought I would bump to see if there are more gold stainless owners out there that care to respond

I've had a gold stainless since a couple days after launch.... no scratches. I have bumped into stuff several times... the kitchen counter, doorway, etc.

Not terribly hard, but I did connect with these surfaces and so far, so good.

Guys I’ve had the gold SS from day 1. Ive baby’ed my watch. The other day my hand was under a table top and I made a mistake of reaching for something with that hand and I slightly hit my watch on the underneath of it.

It wasn’t a very hard hit but in the corner of where the impact happened scratch marks appeared on the metal. It would be hard to even photograph so it can’t be that deep but in the sun I can see scratches in that spot.

This could easily happen to anyone and I wouldn’t have described the table bottom as very rough. And as a result of this I would describe the PVD gold as not being very strong IMO

Do you see silver under the scratch? Or is it still gold?

Thanks

I've had mine since the day after launch and it has no scratches.

Here is something interesting from the Daring Fireball review:

"The gold finish is applied using a physical vapor deposition (PVD) process. Apple tells me this process is very similar to the process that applies the diamond like coating (DLC) to the space black watches. One thing about both of these processes is that they take several hours to apply per watch, according to Apple."

Did you try rubbing it out with a soft cloth, all might not be lost

That’s because thousands of hands have touched the Apple Watch in the _same_ spot on the dispay, where it has worn the oleophobic coating. That’s not a normal situation for most who have their Apple Watches to have that type of wear in such a short amount of time, and of course those dispay watches are not maintained either.

I'v had the gold SS since launch and no scratches yet even though I have hit a few things with the watch (door jam, table edge, aluminum edge of my computer, etc.).

Good to know thanks went and tried one on. Took my key and gave it a quick scratch test with my key. No scratch
