Something I do wonder is how chlorine would affect the coating for the black or gold stainless. Any watch experts out there have any ideas on if chlorine will degrade that coating?

Chlorine should not affect the actual stainless casing (Nor Have I heard any actual concerns of this occurring), but Apple recommends if you use the watch in a pool or the ocean, you rinse it off with freshwater, then by thoroughly drying it off. However, Cholorine has been known to have a reaction with the oleophobic coating, which can cause a separation on the display, but I have only read a few cases of this actually happening.

i swam for at least two weeks everyday with the gold SS in a chlorinated pool, for 45-60 minutes. never had a problem with the coating or display. i shower after the swim so maybe that's all it takes.

I have sat in a jacuzzi with mine no problem

This actually happens a lot. You will see iPhone model displays and Apple Watch model displays where customers will intentionally try to test the durability by scratching it. Especially for those who are aware that Apple use the sapphire display, they test the durability by doing this, even though they probably shouldn’t, because it’s not fair to the next customer that wants to see the display without being damaged.

Actually, what most don’t know, the Apple Watch displays you see in store, from my understanding, they are not sapphire displays, they are actually an all glass display to make the displays appear to be brighter under store lighting conditions.
How did you know they are not sapphire displays?

I don’t know for sure someone posted that they weren’t. Let me clarify I’m not worried about the display on the SS. I have a SS Space Blk series 3 and the display is very durable. My concern is with the finish on the gold. From what constructive responses I have gotten from those who have purchased the gold and my own quick test I will be quite comfortable purchasing the gold. As I am not one who is hard on their watch. I probably will keep my series 3 Space Blk to wear to the gym.

A few members have iterated that Apple employees in the store said that the displays are glass for the Apple Watch demo models only, simply because the lighting is so bright, that it causes a reflection, where it can be obtrusive when viewing the content on the display.

Sapphire crystal is more reflective than glass due to its higher index of refraction (roughly 1.8 compared to 1.4).

My one day old gold ss is already my having micro scratches on the body.. it seems like its like the same as silver one....
The problem with gold is u cant buff it

Silly question have u tried rubbing it out with a soft cloth?

If the PVD coating is scratched on the gold stainless, you can’t remove the scratch. It’s not like the regular stainless, were you can take a polishing cloth to remove any scratches.

I have regular SS; after TWO days i noticed scratches, i think due to the SS loop band.

i think that all the SS loop band can scratch the watch itself because made of the same material but more sharp; hopefully the regular SS can’t scratch the sapphire glass like the SBSS does.

Don’t know with gold SS, but i’d be very cafeful!

Just wanted to bump to see how the gold stainless steel owners are doing scratch wise

I wear mine everyday for a week, no scratches yet. I bumped dumbbell into my watch while doing exercises over my head , but nothing happened to the screen. I'm thinking wearing wristband over watch for the gym, because I know I'll bump it again.
I'm very happy with my choice, gold is beautiful, no scratches so far. I'm sure little scratches will appear in the future, but I'm not worried about that.

Thanks, I have the series 3 SS Space Blk I put a bumper on mine when I go to the gym. When I use the fly machine with the adjustable arms on each side I turn my watch inward towards my body. Hopefully I can pull the trigger next month.

You may want to look into an armband that your watch snaps into while working out. That's what I do when I work with weights or kettlebells. This is the one I use

The one I pulled up is for the 38mm but mine was the 42mm and it fits beautifully and is protected. You remove your band and the face just snaps in. It tracks the same way it would on your wrist.

Might give it a try thanks

I think Gold coating held up better than the plain stainless silver....
