No, they are sending me a new one first.
Then I send back my bad one, had to sign a paper authorizing that if I don't send the old one back they can charge me for it.

Apple is letting me do the same thing, and they were, surprisingly, pretty cool about the whole thing. I let them know I was in school, and really didn't want to lose the use of my laptop right before I take exams.

So far I haven't noticed any dead pixels at all. Part of me doesn't want to find them if they do exist lol. In all my apple products I have never had a dead pixel. I have owned iphone 3g 3gs 3 iphone 4's my current rmbp 2008 umb tons of old g'3 and g'4s. Even my current ibook g3 and powerbook g4 aluminum still seems to have perfect screens :)

After three weeks with no screen issues, suddenly I too have a dead pixel/bright spot. Taking it in today to see what the Genius says.

Was wondering how your experience went i bought mine 3 weeks ago as well and just noticed a dead pixel in the middle of the screen that i thought was just dust, but alas it was not. Now I'm noticing it doing normal things. I also found another dead pixel in the bottom left but that one is not noticeable except when i'm doing an lcd test with a white background

I was thinking of going to the apple store
Your story would be appreciated.

The genius said the screen needed to be replaced. Since the return period passed, and since they didn't have any replacements in stock, the genius ordered a new screen. Two days later they called me to bring my laptop in, and they installed the new screen within an hour.

Dead pixels

Oh well. Got my MBPR 4 weeks ago -spotted dead pixel(3 pixels together) right in the middle of the screen. Couldn't be more annoying. After looking closely found another 4 spots with total of 6 pixels. Will bring to apple today-after paying 3k for premium laptop I don't think there will be any issue replacing the screen. So far Apple had been great servicing my other computers so don't expect any problems. On the top of the pixels issue-computer is drastically overheating and stops refreshing the screen so you get scrambled view of old and new open windows. Sort of the faulty Video Memory effect. It doesn't happen all the time and varies on the CPU load. I can have 10 heavy programs open and it won't happen, then I will use just Safari or Firefox for few hours and it goes banana. Not all the time though. From my own professional experience with semiconductors-looks like a cold solder on one of the Video Memory chips.

How do you check for dead pixels?

Make your screen all black background and you if you see any bright pixels on the screen-those are "Bright Dead pixels". If you do the same with your screen but make background all white-any dark pixels-they will be "dark dead pixels". They're dead because they don't respond to what the matrix controller tells them to do. Usually you will notice anything like that while working on the computer. Especially when you have a group of 3-4 pixels in one spot doing the same thing.

I heard steve jobs say (I think in the original white macbook introduction) that Apple's competitors buy the displays that Apple rejects. So I'm assuming they reject a lot and don't have a problem doing so since they actually sell these.

If you have good eye sight at close distance you will absolutely be able to see a dead pixel.

Hi everyone, retina macbook developed a dead pixel about an hour ago when I woke it up from sleep.

To answer a few inquiries: yes, you can quite clearly see dead pixels on the retina screen. In fact it might be even more obvious because of the vibrance. And this dead pixel in particular I can see from across the room.

I zoomed in on a 100% black image and took a picture with my 4S:

I might try getting it repaired or replaced.

I am on my second rMBP and both have had dead or stuck pixels. My experience with the first, which I also posted in another thread was:

  • Day 1 - Perfect Screen
Day 8 - Noticed stuck pixel(s) close to middle of screen while watching a movie and thought that maybe I had just somehow missed it previosuly
Day 10 - After some internal back and forth about what to do, decided to get a replacement, with Apple letting me keep the current rMBP until the replacement arrives, which should be tomorrow.
Day 14 - New stuck pixel, about two inches to the right of the first, but on the exact same row - i.e., perfectly aligned horizontally with other stuck pixel
Day 15 - Third stuck pixel(s), this time a couple of inches to the left of the first, and again in the same horizontal row.
I tried both software and other methods to get the first two stuck spots unstuck, but had no luck.

Just received my replacement yesterday. It has one dead - not stuck - pixel in the lower right hand portion of the screen. I would never notice it in every day use, so I am going to keep this one and hope that no other problems develop. If they do, I have another 13 days to switch it out for a new one.

Maybe Apple has a 0-dead-pixels policy.

No they don't, I have a friend who actualy has a MacBook Pro Retina with a dead pixel, and it is clearly visible.

I will receive mine in a few days, and will return it and buy a new one if it has the same issue. I spent over 3k€ for it with a Time Capsule, and plan to use it for years (I'm still using my early 2007 MacBook), and this kind of issue is just impossible to get off my mind :-/

Got 3 dead pixels on the MBP I bought some days ago. More than 3 actually, as one is considerably bigger. Probable 10 pixels or so. I am really angry.

Every time I see what I think is a dead pixel, it turns out to be a spec of dust. Which this display seems to attract a lot of for some reason (reminds me of the CRT days)

My 1st ever mac and my 1st ever laptop, a 2.6/16/512, ordered on release day. Received it one week later and was happy for 2 weeks until found a cluster of dead pixels on the bottom right.

1st replacement - terrible gradient problem. Upper half has red hues and bottom half has green hues. To top it off, found a dead pixel offset from the centre of the screen.

2nd replacement - screen has a permanent burn-in.

3rd replacement - a brand new CRU. Found 2 dead pixels yet again. Wow. I've had it. I spoke w/ one of the store managers and demanded a refund as I will not live w/ a machine that cost me 3.5g and has dead pixels, permanent image persistence, ghosting, and gradient problems.

Good news is they will refund my money even after 2 months since my purchase. I was quite impressed by their stellar cs and their willingness to break their own rules to make their customer happy. One of the other store managers came out from the silver door where only apple employees are allowed to go in and handed me her phone so I can talk to applecare and have it processed. She was very apologetic and promised me it will be refunded in 1 week time.

I might try this lottery again in a few months time but for now I'm staying away from this fiasco. Not happy w/ my 1st experience in mac but apple has earned a lifetime customer for their examplary cs.

1st one - No Dead Pixels & yellow tint

2nd one - 15 dead pixels & yellow tint

Definitely gong back.

Read through all of these , man so many dead pixels did you guys order it online or buy it in stores? Maybe people who order it online now will get a latest model made with better quality?

..mine (2.3ghz 8gb 256gig rMBP) was perfect out of the box on thursday but this evening a pixel died or stuck.. it is clearly visible as a white spec (or something close to white) against dark colors.. and is also noticeable (but less so) as a dark spec against light backgrounds.

I'm gonna bring it back to the "Compu B" store (no apple stores in Ireland) where i bought it tomorrow and see what they have to say. fingers crossed.

its also writing to usb thumb drives at an alarmingly slow speed.. no idea what that about! 5 mins for 2.5gb.. not good

Get the train to Belfast dude. Cost you £20 (not sure in €) but there's an apple store here

I have 4 dead pixels on my Rmbp, and they bother me, especially when im watching videos. What should i do, will apple replace it for me?
