I have 4 dead pixels on my Rmbp, and they bother me, especially when im watching videos. What should i do, will apple replace it for me?

Apple stores are hit or miss depending the the "genius" you get; some of them are so used to dealing with ignorant people they try to pass defects or quality control issues off as "in spec".

Best case scenario is returning within the 14-day period. If they refuse to replace it, just have it refunded and buy again.

Just to bring closure to my earlier comments, I decided to give it another go and downgraded to 2.3/8/256 base model so I can exchange it on the spot in case my hideous luck w/ retina displays kicks in again. Went to a different retail store and started browsing. A nice Chinese fellow came up to me and provided assistance. He offered me 200 bucks discount and a 100-buck mac apps gift card and inspected the screen w/ me before I left.

After 4 rmbp's, finally this 5th one is perfect in every regard. No dead pixels, no image persistence, no yellow hue, no gradient problem, no backlight bleeding. Edge-to-edge absolutely perfect. Came home and inspected it the 2nd time and the 3rd time a few hours later. Again, impeccable. Even the aluminium exterior is perfect. Not even a single mark on it. I'm finally a happy camper and now just gonna maintain it well. :)

While I was there, I asked him how long he's been working at apple and he said 3 years. He seemed to be doing what he was doing for a while and I wasn't entirely wrong. Again, came out impressed by apple's top-notch cs.

If you've been having terrible luck and are as picky as I am about displays as anyone paying this much premium on a laptop should be is entitled to a flawless machine. I had some serious thoughts about getting a mba so I can forget about dead pixels but after getting spoiled by rmbp, it's difficult to look at anything else. Nothing drives me nuts more than dead/stuck/bright pixels on a display. Just to show how picky I am about displays, it did not take me more than a second to spot a bright pixel on my buddy's 60" toshiba tv that he was using for more than a month prior to my visit to his house. I noticed it immediately as I walked into his house. Also went through 5 different dell u3011's, 4 different u2410's to get perfect ones. Perfect rmbp rolls are possible and now I'm a believer.

Mine has one dead pixel. However, it is exactly where the black apple is in the menubar - so, I can only see it when using a screen resolution other than 1440x900 (which I use almost exclusively - I only use 2880x1800 when using Adobe Lightroom)

I have one in the center of my screen. I went to the apple store yesterday and they're ordering a new screen and then install it.

I just noticed a dead pixel on my rMBP tonight, and it is pretty big so it would not surprise me if there are a few dead beside each other. It is just left to the centre of the screen and is glaringly obvious when watching movies. I am nearly certain that it only appeared today, as I would have noticed it prior to this. Would it be common for dead pixels to show after a few days use rather than be present from day one? I am just worried that more will start showing up over the next few days.

I envy your eyesight.

Do you want to swap with me perhaps . . . ?

I got one

I ordered the 500 G Pro version from Apple online and recieved it three days ago on the 20th. After a couple of days using it I realized oddly placed on the right side of the screen was a blue dot. Turned out to be a dead pixel. I called Apple support and They told me I could mail it in and they would send me a new one free of charge. The problem was I have school starting on Monday and need it for that. I asked if I took it to the store could they do something. He told me it was up to them. I went to The apple store in Nashville and they offered me a retail swap. All in all great customer service. " I did not purchase apple care and they still swapped it free of charge.

I am wondering if your bad pixels are really noticeable?
When I read this thread, i tried very hard (put my eyes 7cm from the screen) to look for bad pixels.

Sadly, I found one dead pixel located on top left corner near the status bar, I can barely see it ( can't notice it from 20 cm distance). Everyone want a prefect display but if i return it I cannot guarantee to have a Samsung display again.

So if you were me will you exchange it for a dead-pixel-free & samsung display ? If your bad pixel is unnoticeable why you still exchange it ? I am still within 14 days window

Hello.

A stuck pixel is an actual hardware fault - a screenshot won't show it since, well, we're not actually looking at your physical screen.

Or, in the unlikely event that you are referring to that black line, it's just a web code error.

thanks for responding.
Yes i was referring to the black line.

When they replace the screen, does that include the aluminium back as well?

I'm getting mine replaced this Monday due to a dead pixel in the center of the screen and I was wondering if the entire aluminium back is replaced too (mine has a nick on the bottom corner of the lid)

These screens are not made to be pulled out and swapped - I imagine they'll replace the whole top of the laptop, screen/aluminum and all.

I have a rMBP sitting right here, boxed up to be returned.

It has a couple of dead pixels.

There were some stuck pixels which I actually "massaged out" but I found one near the centre of the screen which is permanently off - dead. There is also one right next to the right hand bezel, also in the centre.

I would bet my nuts to a barn dance that many of you have dead/stuck pixels but you have not thoroughly checked for them. Select white wallpaper, brightness to max and in a dark room meticulously go around your display. Also, using a black background and the same method (brightness to full in a dark room) will show up defective pixels if you have any.

Some might say that I should not "hunt" for faulty pixels but I disagree as I would rather find them straight away so that the machine can be returned, than find them later on down the line and end up being stuck with them (no pun intended). The thing is, once you clock these defects it is next to impossible to try to "ignore" them. Also, if we was talking about a 500 quid Dell I wouldn't be bothered so much, but when forking out this kind of dough I expect much higher (perfect) standards. And I know I'm not alone in my thinking here ...

I am actually buying a machine from an Apple Store today, rather than going through the drama of ordering and delivery and yet more returns if necessary. The only drawback is that I will have to stick with 8gb of ram, but that's just the way it is.

Anyway, perform the checks that I detailed above and let the thread know if you find anything ... would be interesting!

Good luck, and happy hunting ...

Hi everyone,

I wanted to note that I had my display replaced a second time. Both times were due to dead pixels. The first replacement display I received was an LG model. After 5 weeks, the LG display developed 5-6 dead pixels scattered around the center of the display.

I took my retina mac back to the Apple store yesterday for the dead pixels, and they informed me that because the LG screen has known quality issues, they would immediately replace my display with a Samsung one with no questions asked! (They didn't even want to see the dead pixels)

LG screen with a dot of stuck pixels (bright green) near the center of the screen. Apple store is going to replace it, no issues dealing with them. Small dot, but very distracting.

I have two very noticeable white dead pixels in the middle of the screen, I assume they must be clusters. As well as three smaller ones on the right side. Unfortunately I'm abroad until Dec so can't take it in but i hope they replace it otherwise I am going to be very annoyed.

Furthermore the right side makes a really loud crackling sound, as soon as I log into any kind of game it intensifies (fan maybe). Moreover I also have the graphics issue where the graphics card seems to randomly stop working and I have to do an SMC reset.

Not at all happy.

Ive just received mine back because of a bad LG panel. It had IR from day 1 and started to develop stuck white pixels after 3 months which on further inspection looked like exploded pixels that had burst through the polariser on the screen leaving a small crater that could be felt with a finger.

Now I have the the Samsung display but it seems a bit yellower than the LG did. Im still messing with colour calibration profiles trying to get it right.

Same problem here, but my cluster of stuck pixels showed up suddenly about two weeks ago (I've had my MBPr since September). I took it to the Apple Store right away and the Genius gave me a very hard time. First he claimed it was "just one pixel", then when I pulled a magnifying glass and showed him a macro photo, he changed his mind and decided that "the irregularity" was "within spec"... and when I asked what the criteria were, he gave me the most BS, invented-on-the-spot answer I've ever heard from an adult. "I can't tell you that, it's not public knowledge. It's very technical and mathematical, and factors in a lot of criteria."

I had to argue before he agreed to replace the screen, and then insisted that he was doing me a favor and that they wouldn't ever replace the screen again for "this issue". *sigh* This is the third time I've argued with Apple over bunk, defective screens (once for vanity-level light leakage on my iPad 2, and now twice for major defects in my MBPr screen), and it's gotten very old.

FYI, here is the cluster. If you divided the screen into 3 columns, it's on the line between the second and third columns, right smack in the middle of the screen. It's like a piece of fuzz has landed on the screen and won't go away.

FYI, I've trued UDPixel and JSScreenFix to no avail, as well as the tapping and massaging techniques. No dice.

I'm under tight deadlines and can't be without my computer for a week, so I'll have to take it back at the end of January to have the screen replaced. Still... it's been a huge pain in the butt.
