If they do change the size of the iPhone screen, this gives them the opportunity to bend all of the customers over a third time and force them to re-purchase all of their apps in this new size. I don't know about anybody else, but this double and triple dipping is going to have to stop at some point.

But updates to apps are free.

But updates to apps are free.

Most app updates are free. I've purchased many apps in the past only to see that the developer released a whole new app giving it the features that they promised in the version that I purchased and left the old app in the dirt. Two examples were G-Map and Twitterific.

No it reeks of logic. Microsoft's main cash cow is

Windows
Office

How far do you think Android or even iOS goes without Office Support? Android's accent came at the expense of both Microsoft's and Rim's initiatives. RIM, not being a desktop platform vendor, is basically going to die. Microsoft is fine and rolling out their W8 products. Microsoft's patent portfolio is immense. Google can't match it nor Apple's. There's not much room to maneuver. Much like they lost the Nortel patents to a more well heeled group they will lose future battles as well. They don't have the capital. Who can even say that Android is making anyone money? If you really look at where things are you should come in agreement that there are multiple ways for Android to fail and far fewer ways for them to find success.

So be it. If you think that makes MS more of a threat to Apple, I don't care to argue it. We may be talking about different things, but just so you know, Google has their own portfolios of patents (Motorola buyout?) and makes an immense amount of money too (whether it be from Android or not).

Also, it's just interesting that so many of you devoted iOS users constantly cry how very important having 500,000 apps are, but welcome WP8 and their paltry 80-90K apps with open arms. Then you look at Android's marketshare, their number of apps, and somehow are able to think they are no threat to Apple.

Disclaimer: I actually think WP8 looks great.

Motorola's patents may not be that valuable

It's because Android has no stickiness and could be losing about a third of its users to other platforms.

Despite the rosy prognostications from many on these forums the prospects of Android don't quite look that good. The platform isn't going to survive based on the numbers of people that want 4.5" or larger phones.

I don't have Android hate. Android has kept Apple honest and put fire under their arses and that's a great thing. As a platform though Android is carrier driven and the carriers can switch people back to W8 if they so deem because while people love to trot out the iSheep slam the truth is consumers are constantly steered into focus products every day.

Man! A "taller only" iPhone will let me watch movies better...(that I NEVER do) and then I can add more app icons on my front screen (which I never do either - I always keep a clean front with only three icons on top/three bottom).

Seriously, when im typing in landscape, I could ALSO care less about a taller (left to right) screen width. When in landscape, I need the up and down space! Im actually starting to wish the phone would get "wider only" if I had to choose between taller and wider!!! THATS what I need!

The iPhone 4S was Apple's best selling model, and it came after the big screen onslaught from the Evo, the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Nexus.

It actually outsold them all by a goodmargin.

So the market might want a larger screen, but they want a larger screen iPhone, not a larger screen brandX.

Exactly! I believe the market does want a bigger screen, and that is why Android has grown. But if all things were equal (screen size, hardware, device form, etc) and the only difference was OS, then I believe a vast majority would choose iOS.

I'm actually ditching my iPhone 4 when Note 3 comes out.

I really like iOS, but I can not stand the 4 inch screen. When I went to Samsung store today and tried Note 2, I was amazed just how much better it is to have a larger screen. iPhone 5, which is slightly bigger, does not compare to Note or even S4. I will still stick to Apple-based products for laptop, etc but unfortunately Samsung has better smartphones, which is painful to admit but is true. Lack of new features, compared to Android, is painful.

Every years they say the same thing. Bigger screen! Bigger screen. Bigger screen.

They already increased the size of the iPhone last year, how big do you want it to get?

I seem people walking around with galaxy notes, it looks like they're carrying a book!

Don't listen to them Apple.

Apple must offer a 4.5" screen!! Apple must perfect Siri!! Apple must make maps apps competitive with Google!! I think Apple is dropping the ball!! When I say: "Where is xxxxx restraunt", and Siri doesnt understand me, or the map doesnt nail its location, and I go to Google, and it nails it......Apple has a problem!

Just wait till the 4.9" and 5" android phones that drop next year.

Everything will be the size of the Note, which is the most obnoxious phone made since 80's brick phones, and certain people will still insist they are so easy to carry and comfy for one handed use.

We are quickly approaching self-parody territory.

Quoting myself here.

I have a Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5.

GS4...Easy to carry, yes.

One handed use not so much. Not for me at least. There is some reaching and less secure grip during use at times. Part of the iPhone magic I've learned is that one handed use and high comfort during use.

Also Samsung, LG, HTC, and Motorola have done an amazing job of keeping designs compact but with larger screens, so I was wrong on my earlier prediction of 2013 android devices.

Give me a break. YOU not wanting a larger screen is your prerogative, but many many people, including myself, have been begging Apple for a slightly larger screen for a few years now.

The fact that some of you continue to espouse the myth that a 4.7 inch screen size on an iPhone makes it the next Galaxy Note is getting real old.

If you got out more, you'd see that the new Moto X for instance has a 4.7 inch screen in a form factor just barely larger than the iPhone:

Moto X

Height: 129.3 mm (5.09 inches)
Width: 65.3 mm (2.57 inches)
Depth: 10.4 mm (.41 inches)
Weight: 4.59 oz (130 g)

iPhone 5

Height: 123.8 mm (4.87 inches)
Width: 58.6 mm (2.31 inches)
Depth: 7.6 mm (0.30 inch)
Weight: 3.95 oz (112 grams)

This is the phone size I want the iPhone to be.

You, sir, are a prophet. I would venture to say that the larger display pundits have never actually used a phone with a larger display.

Apple is about to lose one of its most faithful (me) and part of the reason is the diminutive display they offer up.

Isn't it funny how now people are getting their inspiration from Samsung phones? First people wanted their phones to be smaller. Now they want them to be bigger.

But I agree. Once you get a taste of larger phone sizes, you just can't get enough. It's too good.

But you won't hear me on the sidelines every year, "Bigger screen. Bigger screen. Bigger screen." The screen will become bigger when it's ready. Battery life is currently a problem on iPhones.

I think people simply want a bigger screen, not a frickin phablet! :)

Plus given the evolution of app complexity, it's natural to evolve the screen size. But there's limit...otherwise you might as well use a tablet. IMHO, that size is 4.5"

Ok with all that in mind.... Do you know what possible resolutions the screen could be? We know apple likes to do things in multiples. Ether twice the previous (like retina) or just add in one direction (like the 5). So lets assume iPhone 2014 is gonna have a bigger screen...what possible sizes could they do given how they like their resolution to be scaled up "cleanly"? Does that question make sense? Thanks.

About 45 percent of iPhones sold right now are the iPhone 4 and 4S. Apple isn't losing money. So I think the short answer is no.

For all the complaining I see on here about screen size, that fact alone shows that most consumers want a cheap iPhone. I think I would like one of the 4.8" displays on an iPhone, but I'm going to be thrilled to update to a 4" display on the next one.

IMO, yes. I plan on switching to Android purely because of it. The OS made me weary at first, but Android has proven itself to be a formidable alternative.

Competitive? Nope.

I like either a 4 inch or 4.3 inch iphone in the very same case its in now. I like Apples more mature looking phone that is not plastic or so wide that it's uncomfortable for me to hold (Large hands), but if Apple wants to have additional phones, which I doubt, that are 4.5 inch, that's fine.

I don't use my phones as a toy viewing movies, and playing games, Facebook stuff, but I know many do for now, but as they grow older (40 and above), this will change for them.

:D

Larger iPhone

This makes logical sense. If I want to use my iPhone just to talk then a 3 - 4 screen is fine. But if I am going to use any of the thousands of apps in the App Store, then I need a larger screen at least a 5 - 5.5 inch screen would be great.

Agree 100%.

I've wanted the iPhone to have a 4.7 or 5 inch screen (not bigger than that) since before the iPhone 5 was released. I was pissed when the iPhone 5 was released with the longer 4 inch screen but I bought it anyways because I really love the simplicity of the iOS, the apps and the accessories.

I have an Apple TV, iPad and MacBook Air and love the apple ecosystem, but enough is enough. The 5s will be a joke and proof that apple is stuck in yesterday's tactics. They need to change the game play book ASAP.

I'm so pissed with apple's reluctance to change (which is pure pride and arrogance) that I will give them an ultimatum of September 2014 to release an iPhone with a 4.7 or 5 inch screen or I will have no other option than to switch to android. I will keep my other apple gadgets since they are clearly the best, but unfortunately the iPhone no longer is. I won't lie to myself or defend them.

I no longer have no fear to switch to android because I'm very tech savvy and know that I will adapt well. My real fear is that wont want to come back to the iPhone once I see and use all the features the iPhone does not have.

I know that there are many many people who think just like and that group is growing. Apple needs to get their heads out of their a$& and start listening to the feedback of their average users, not their fanboys. They will provide real honest feedback.

They don't need it to stay competitive because the iPhone 5 is only 4" and is still the best selling phone on the market.

There is a demand for a larger screen around 4.3"-4.5". The phablet size is more a niche category. So I fully expect them to offer one maybe even as soon as next year. I do like the physical size of the iPhone 5 so I would hope that if they did make the screen larger that it would mostly be accomplished by shrinking the bezels and extending the screen near the edges on the sides.

People still don't seem to understand how Apple works. Their sales are not declining so they are not in a panic mode where they start having knee jerk reactions to the competition by rushing a revamped design iPhone to the market. Saving the larger screen for the iPhone 6 next year gives them a strong feature to advertise in the redesign and convince people to upgrade. It's genius.

When they mak an iPhone with a 5" screen that's when I don't want iphone anymore. If day between 4.3-4.5" would be perfect. If you get up to 4.7" and 5.3" it gets to big.

I've been a pretty big advocate of a small screen. But don't care if it gets bigger at the same time.

However I've noticed recently there are times I wish the screen was bigger especially when showing friends and family pictures and videos.

I was showing my step father a picture of something I purchased and he was adjusting his glasses and trying to see the screen better. Then playing with his Razr Maxx I realized why. That .3 (.8 for me 4S) makes an obvious difference.

I think the iPhone could lose some bezel to a bigger screen and not increase overall size like the S3 did going to the S4 which the screen got bigger and the phone got smaller. Or a Razr M approach and just shrink the phone around the display.

I agree with you. Returned my Samsung S2 a while back for the size alone. Thought I would like it, but it was not as comfortable as the iPhone, not to mention the OS. Don't think Apple will make two size phones either, at least in the near term. Apple normally stays the course with a mature looking phone, and does not need to keep up with the competition as has been demonstrated over the years. ;)
