Does Apple need an iPhone with a bigger screen to stay competitive?

the 4.7 inch screen size is the sweet spot for a lot of people, i think apple should increase the iphone's screen size to 4.7 inches. 4 inches is just too small

A lot of people, but not the majority. The masses are how/what drive Apple decision making, not kids that use their phones as home computers. 4.3 or 4.5 max in 2014. The rest should look else where ;)

Perhaps more accurately would be, does Apple need an iPhone with a different aspect ratio?

I'd hate to see a display that measure 4.5 or 4.7 inch diagonally, but retains the exact same width.

Well, CNET has made a polling and the users disagree with you.

60% (of over 11k) of those who completed the poll regarding what they want in the next iPhone, including the subject of screen sizes, chose a screen of 4.7 or 5 inches, the most popular being the 4.7 inch with 31% (29% chose the 5 inch).

The larger screen screen market is not a niche market anymore, it is the norm.

Yes but until sales doesn't meet their expectations Apple will continue to do what they are doing. At the end it's all about numbers.

Take a look at Samsung, they realized they don't need to change **** after the success they had with the S3.

Yep, the S4 felt to me as a lazy effort at best on samsung´s behalf, they could have done a lot better, but they deciced to stick with what works, I know because a friend has owned both (and hence I have gotten around playing with them)

I do hope by the time iPhone 6 comes out apple has something with a "wow factor" design, be it screen or features

i think most(not all obviously), would not want to go back to a smaller phone after using a 4.7-5" screen. Half my family felt this way.

If I were to take your post literally we could also factor in that 50% of your family would go back to a smaller screen. That would suggest a split in demand ;)

And that is the best argument for having two screen sizes, obviously one size will never fulfil the needs of all.
I have always wondered why do we have multiple screen size MacBooks, iMacs, Apple monitors, iPods and recently iPads, but not iPhones, it just doesn't make sense...

Excellent point!

Well that pretty much is the point I make all too often. If they had a large phone and a small phone, you'd keep everyone happy. The app developers might not be so happy though.

Never thought of that. I understand that it's a smaller device and there's less room for two sizes but still, if the other products can...why not iPhone? Thanks for that!

I wish you "small screen people" would realize others dont want to take away your mini screen, just add a decent sized one.

I wish you 'large screen people' would realise that I called for an option to suit consumers who have preferences for both. I suggested Apple produce two sizes of iPhone and most people agree with that,or at least the responses I have received have indicated that. My post just above yours highlighted that point for the umpteenth time yet you ignored it.

There are plenty of people on here who declare we don't need smaller screens any more so my point is more directed at them than those like myself who want to see options for consumers.

Its not a poll that counts. Its Apples business model that is important to Apple, not you, and those that want a wider phone. Simple ;) PS: Online polls are not real polls that mean much. Just a few that are online and most people don't go online to cast a poll vote.

Agree with you The-Real-Deal

Online Polls are useless to gauge what most people want. Even political Pollsters are + or - 3 to 4 points, but are at least more accurate than online polls. Than we have those that weigh in with a family poll that is even more useless, or a few on here that say they are leaving Apple to go elsewhere if the wider phone is not released.

Goodness, I have read from members on this forum that have left Android to return to apple. Wish people would stop using online polling to gauge wider phone complaints. Its Apple that makes the final decision, and they are not making hug phones for those that want them. They do what they do.

Why haven't you all that want a wider phone just go get one ? What is holding you back. Haven't read anyone giving an answer to this question. Why not just go..

Agree, its a win win for everyone to have multiple screen sizes. The consumers will be happy with having more choices (and not tempted to abandon iOS just because of dissatisfaction with the form factor of the phone) and Apple will be happy since it will retain its current customers (they will upgrade) and they may also gain new customers such as Android users who use Android devices just because they can't tolerate the small screen of current iPhones.

Let's just hope that Apple wakes up and makes it happen for everyone.

Yet Samsung did what everyone is asking for from Apple going from the S3 to S4. Bigger screen on a smaller phone.

So if that's lazy effort what would you say Apple is doing? I feel the same about the 4S to 5. If every other manufacturer can fit a 4" screen on a 4S size device then certainly Apple is capable of that right?

I have answered that question before, so I'll do it again and be clear. I love and want to continue to use iOS because I think it is the best OS out there. I love apple products and don't want to leave the ecosystem. So what is holding me back is that I can't have iOS in the phones manufactured by the rest of the market, so I need Apple to either make a larger phone (in addition to the current size) or let me put iOS on other phones (will never happen obviously).

I meant I felt no difference between devices at all, they were too similar, and yes I agree on the switch from 4S to 5. Thats why I went with a 32GB 4S over a 16 GB 5.

I also meant I was wowed when I met the S3 for the first time, not so much when I met the S4. I hope both Samsung and Apple do better with the iPhone 6 (5S does not interests me) and the S5, It may be a deciding factor once my contract expires

I hope that when the next iPhone---5S or whatever they choose to call it---is released, and the screen is no bigger than at present, all these threads will dry up, and those who feel compelled to start them will go elsewhere. Anywhere, but just go.
Seriously, it gets tedious. It's a phone. Life goes on.
There, I said it.

If they reduced the bezel size, made it edge to edge on the sides and reduced the top and bottom as much as they could, and maybe added a couple millimeters of width couldn't they make the 5/5S screen substantially larger without making the phone larger?

More than useless specs I think something like an iphone with an edge to edge screen, a glass conducting speaker and earpiece which was invisible, and no home button would be an insane upgrade, and I wouldn't even care if they didn't change any of the specs at all.

jaja, agree. But unfortunately that won't happen soon. But well get the A7 processor and the amazing fingerprint sensor, even more megapixels for the camera and larger flash (we don't want dark pictures do we?)!!!:eek::eek: OMG where do I preorder??!!?? (being sarcastic)

Worse of all is that we'll probably get Phil Schiller to make another arrogant/pathetic statement like "who said we can't innovate..." or for sure we'll get the Ive video with the white background stating how "amazing" the iPhone 5S is.
