The only one I don't like begins with 'C', ends with 'T' and has a 'U' and 'N' in it (not coconut :D), but I still do use it when I'm dealing with a right c**t.

They are only words, true. But they show some one with a very limited vocabulary, who needs expletives to make some general point. I really don't waste much time listening.

I find the words ****** and ****** offensive...I'm fine with saying them when talking about them like this, but never in usage.

Pretty much everyone I go to school with finds ****** offensive too...but majority are ok with ******....personally I think ******, in 50 years, will be looked at the same way as ****** is now.

Most other swears I'm fine with(the normal, none racist ones)...it shows your angry about something...I try and save them for when I'm upset, so people know I'm angry.

IMO, that's the whole point of swear words. When they're used incessantly as pointless adjectives, they lose their power.

What do swear words literally mean?

S Word = poo, something we all do every day.
F Word = Coitus
C Word = vagina

Are the concepts these words represent really more offensive than those represented by the words 'genocide', 'rape' or 'murder'? If they are society is seriously ******** up.

In Québec it's all about religion based words (since the catholic religion has been extremely powerful here until the '60s). So tabernacle, calice, hostie and other communion-related items are the worst swears. It amuses me a lot, as an atheist, but at the same time they have a very nice sonority when pronounced, a good "tabarnak" is much more powerful than the f-word (which is very banalized here, you can hear it in mainstream media without anyone complaining).

I've been noticing more obscenities used by more people in the last 5 years. Really, we're getting more primitive by the day.

I find swearing perfectly acceptable in certain situations. Sometimes strong language is necessary to get your point across.

What I find unacceptable is how society regards "foul language". Kids listen to songs and play video games that advocate murder, drugs, rape, and other terrible crimes. This goes on without much restriction. Meanwhile, someone says "****" in front of your ten-year-old and everyone is up in arms! It's a word! Get over it! It has gotten to the point that I'll try to listen to music on the radio and only get to hear half of the song. Why? Because, apparently, words that are used in a sexual or violent manner are considered profane. Things like "bullet", "body", "lips", "sex", etc. are cut out on public radio. I'm not even making this up. It's ridicules...

No, swearing does not offend me however I do not swear very often unless I'm ranting or maybe at work sometimes.

In my line of work I'm used to getting sworn at by patients, however if they are compos mentis I will ask them not to swear. If they're drunk however- waste of breath.

Don't think offended is the word I'd use, but I'm not a huge fan in general...

Personally, I try to refrain from swearing as a matter of believing there (practically) always are better ways to express oneself. But I don't judge others for not being quite as uptight as me, as long as not every other word out of your mouth is a bad one. ;)

Whenever someone swears in their normal everyday language, it bothers me. I could be having a normal conversation with someone, but if they swear, I immediately think they are low.

It's different if you swear because you have to or if you're angry or something. But it's something else to swear with other people on an everyday basis. In my opinion, it's very annoying.

They're just ****ing words.

Not at all. But there is a time/place for such language I think. If you're one of those Jersery shore douchebags that drop the f-bomb every other second then, well, you come off looking like a douchebag. I find those people that swear the most are often the biggest douchebags/losers one can find.

Maybe their Affliction shirt isn't tight enough or the latest Ed Hardy collection is sold out at the local strip mall. Who knows

How would you categorize one who uses douchebag 3 times in a paragraph? ;)

That's the one word that still seems to be a no-no. You can say the f word or s word and no one really seems to care anymore. But the C word? People still find that extremely offensive. And I don't know why. Dick and cock aren't offensive (look, they're not even censored at MR!) but for some reason, that word just pisses people off.

I hate swearing. I agree with Mkrad's post. IMO people who swear do it because they lack the "brainpower" to express themselves in any other way.:D

Ditto Aeolius' sentiments several posts ago.

It's just wrong, especially around impressionable rugrats and besides, it just shows a general lack of imagination and intelligence.

I find also that generally lower IQ (thus the higher use of abusive language) is in direct proportion to the quicker one is to become social aggressive and excited over proportionately simpler items... :p

I've seen a number of people espousing the swearing = low IQ argument, and it's ridiculous. There is a time and a place for it, sure, but a person swearing is not a direct indicator of intelligence. I've been privileged enough to go to school and work with some of the smartest people in the world, and they swear. It's honestly not a huge deal, it isn't like they'd be swearing at the White House or at dinner or something.

In fact, I'd argue that some of the people I know (myself included) come up with some of the most creative swear combos you'll ever hear. When used properly, they're as Spongebob said: sentence enhancers. There are certainly more important things in the world to care about.

I think a person saying "like" every other word is far more annoying.
