I must stand corrected!
Just tried my atmos channel check files (encoded as DD+) on tvOS 12 beta and indeed : it reads
DOLBY ATMOS - LINEAR PCM
on the panel of STR-DN1080!
aTV does not hesitate to play even 9.1.6 test file.
Thank you floaty83 for giving me this lesson!

PS The good news? Atmos playback is supported on your local iTunes media!

Has anyone been able to get the matrix working in vudu? It says atmos but plays no sound for me. All the other vudu atmos movies are working.

I suspect Dolby MAT is how Apple may be able to embed their UI sounds into an ATMOS stream in the future.

But I also wonder if that will affect those who connect their ATV directly to a TV then try to pass through ARC to a sound bar/AVR...

I’m connecting my Atv 4k to a high end Denon 6300 and that outputs to 7.1.4 speakers and a projector. Atmos works perfectly well on all my other streaming and disk based devices. In current beta I can’t get anything to output Atmos at all. My receiver shows straight 5.1 PCM in and out. So whatever trick Apple is doing to pass Atmos to soundboard isn’t working with a full Atmos setup. Anyone else tried with a receiver setup?

What content have you tried so far? The only thing that’s worked for me so far is Vudu.

A dozen of the iTunes movies reported to work for other users. Paddington, Matrix, lego Batman. Vudu. Netflix.

I just checked on my ATV connected to bounce Atmos, I can't get any Atmos content there either. It all shows 5.1 PCM. In iTunes and Vudu...

I think what is confusing about your results (at least to me) is that you are not explaining on how you are playing the files. I assume you are dumping the test files into your iTunes library on your Mac or PC, then connecting that to AppleTV.
I doubt many people use their AppleTV that way.
But I am glad to hear that it works.

Yes, exactly this.
There was just some speculatiin some time ago that Apple might limit Atmos playback to streaming apps only.
I am glad it’s not that way. I also tend to believe most apps share the tvOS stock media player, so source should not affect the functionality.

I added those files to my library but they only play in Atmos once. Try to play again and it plays in 5.1, a restart allows another play before doing the same.

But got to say the weather one is amazing!!
Had doubts on my up firing Dali speakers but recently repositioned them when I got a new tv this weekend.

Wow!
Could clearly hear the distinct height noises. I know most films are more subtle but at least I know my equipment can do Atmos well.

Now, after some more testing, I would say tvOS's player has some weird glitches with Atmos playback.
I take Sony's androidTV player as a reference implementation at this moment.
About half of the clips I have tried play on Sony's player but tvOS 12 public beta does not engage the Atmos mode.
So at this moment, I will just be waiting for their code to evolve.
PS it is worth noting, that using Subler to repack DD+ track from MKV into MP4, retains all Atmos capabilities.

Kong: Skull Island not in Atmos on my iTunes movies app. Do you get it in Atmos on yours?

What about ATMOS in TrueHD format? Can it be remuxed into MP4 and played with a nice ATMOS logo on our receivers?
At the moment, Infuse is not working with ATMoS.

As of today - no. I am not even sure, anything besides DD and DD+ is defined for MP4 container.
So I know of no method to mux TrueHD track (even without Atmos) into MP4 container.

Someone had reported Atmos content working with iTunes on AppleTV and I cannot confirm that. Only Vudu works and as others have pointed out, you have to exit playback and come back until the HDMI handshake kicks in completely.

Which iTunes content do you have in mind?
In my store purchases, no item has been upgraded to Atmos sound, so there I can not get results yet.
If I copy a proper file into my local iTunes Library (yes, I mean that pc app), then I get a mixed bag. Some work, some not. Have not tried to dig into the details yet.
IMHO the fresh public beta has much less initial delay in starting both audio and video playback, than the first.
PS, one new feature is the indication of DoVi and DoAtmos signal in the Drop-down HUD

Do you have the Amaze trailer in 4K with Dolby Vision? If so, where did you get it. I’ve only found it with standard HD and ATOMS

Atmos without TrueHD is like Sex with Condoms.

Sorry Apple. You have failed with half arsed implementation of HD Audio formats.

What about DTS-X?

Today I reluctantly ordered Nvidia Shield TV because Apple are just full of themselves.

Giving a proper passthrough for TrueHD Atmos and DTS-X would make Apple TV 4K the most complete and awesomest home media player on the planet.

But Apple has different plans and love to deliberately gimp their own devices.

The lack of Dolby TrueHD is baffling since Apple is paying the license for Vision and Atmos. Might be a “looking forward” only mentality. 4K and it’s formats or bust, so to speak.

I find it more damning the lack of DTS all this time. There’s far more DTS-MA movies than TrueHD. DTS-X support from Hollywood has been quite poor. Nearly all films mixed in next gen audio do DTS-X and Atmos mixes. So with Apples hat in Atmos, I think DTS-X is going to be a dead format soon. At least for streaming. Studios will take note too.

Has DTS ever been 'alive' in streaming?
I think in general, lossless formats will not appear in streaming services, not yet. (If avg internet speed is 13MBps, you would not use half of it to deliver audio, I guess).
For Apple, the aTV is a window into their iTunes shop. Yes, they have had to open it up to other streaming providers via apps. But I doubt they ever envisioned it as a full-blown media player.

PS comparing just some of the Atmos and DTS:X demos, I have a feeling that Dolby boys have better understanding of the object-based and immersive audio capabilities. I find DTS demos of X rather dull in comparison. (might be just me or my system, though).
Take the final "Think You Can Handle It" scene from "We are your friends" as an example of how to create immersive open space feeling in Atmos.

Very true. Also, Dolby has emabraced video processing now with Vision. This shouldn’t be underestimated in their market penetration. They’re going to explode the next five years. (in the good way)

To be fair, I don't know of any streaming service that can provide the TrueHD version of Atmos. In fact, I don't think there is any streaming service that provides DTS-HD MA or TrueHD.

A lossless soundtrack from a Blu Ray seems to vary from about 2.5 to 4 GB in side.

It is amazing. I thought getting Atmos would never happen, at least with this version of AppleTV.
Apple makes it happen and now people are starting in with lossless formats in streaming.
Let's not confuse things. Let's get Atmos up and working, then you can ask Apple to stream lossless hi def audio on their wifi device.
