I'm having the same issues and doubts like everybody else. I have a Denon Atmos capable received but I was never able to see any Dolby symbol in the display resembling Atmos so I was not sure if my receiver was even able to decode Dolby Atmos until today. I heard from good sources there are already titles on Apple TV 4K running IOS 12 that can be played in Dolby Atmos such as Jumaji and Blade Runner 2049 among others but did not want to rent or buy anything until I was sure my received could decode Atmos. This is what I did:

1) I downloaded the compatible DD+ Atmos file sample directly from Dolby site: https://www.dolby.com/us/en/guide/test-tones.html
2) I added the downloaded sample to my iTunes
3) Go iTunes preference and share your iTunes library
4) Go to your Apple TV and click on the COMPUTERS app
5) Select your library
6) Click on Home Videos
7) Play the Atmos Sample

If you have a Atmos compatible receiver then you will see the Atmos logo on receiver display.

Seeing the Dolby Atmos logo was amazing. it lifted a have load from my back. lol

Just read that.
Atmos comes with DD+ instead of DD and that is to thank for the better sound.
Very true my friend BUT the guy also compares the iTunes DD audio too and finds the same! Looks like Apple is pushing their audio quality to the max. I've noticed it recently on a few new purchases and rentals with how excellent the audio has been!

*sorry for typo's - damn butterfly keyboard gen 2 starting to die on me within the last few days!

I just need to find these good sounding DD movies, then.
I will do my A\B teat with BR2049. I have it in iTunes (read: DD5.1) and UHD bluray versions. On first try I did not find them even remotely comparable.

Call Me By Your Name has one of the best audio tracks that i've heard on iTunes film. That could be the perfection of its director as his other film 'A Bigger Splash' also shines in the audio front.
'The Post' had beautiful stereo separation when I heard it the other week.

I'll have to watch the movie again on disc and pay more attention to the audio track.

Unfortunately, I don’t have them, in any format.

BTW, my copy of BR2049 has only DD5.1 audio at 380kbps. The DD+7.1 movie I have (Arrival), shows 640kbps.
That alone explains some of the differences in sound. BTW the TrueHD Atmos track on BR2049 clocks in at 5-7Mbps in contrast.

Interesting but as ever guys, use your ears rather than specs! A WAV file can be 100mbps for a three minute tune, with a Apple Lossless coming in it 36mbps - Who can honestly hear the difference? Same with that file at 320kbps AAC at 11mbps. Anyone who can hear a huge difference has either golden ears or is wearing the Emperor's new clothes :)

Dredd showed up as 4K and shows the Atmos logo. No Atmos when played but maybe we are getting closer.

I could have either (or both), but to my ears the difference between iTunes and blu-ray versions is night and day.

I totally agree with that! Off course i cannot hear the difference between a 100mbps WAV file and a 36mbps Lossless audio file, but i most definitely hear the difference between a 36mbps Lossless file and a 320kbps AAC file. The difference is night and day!

You do off course need the equipement that is able to reproduce that audio file (almost) exactly as is. No, you probably cannot hear the difference on a pair of 60,- apple earpods. But you really don't have to be an audiophile to hear the difference on truly high end system. I have done (blind) A/B testing sessions with my friends and family in my home cinema between TrueHD, DD+ and the PCM stream of the Apple TV and every single time people preferred the TrueHD version. Even my parents, who always say they can't hear the difference because of their age, blabla, said the the TrueHD version was richer and more distinct. Sound is louder, but less overwhelming. Even in huge explosive scenes, you are still able to hear each individual detail without the score coming through as one gigantic wall of sound. Just a nicer experience throughout.

If you've ever been in a Cinema, you'll know what i mean. Uncompressed audio finally gives consumers the possibility to truly replicate a professional cinema experience at home.

Movies in iTunes are starting to show Dolby Atmos. I tested about 10 movies both in HD and 4k to confirm this.

New titles like Deadpool 2, Ready Player 1, The Greatest Showman, A Quiet Place all have Dolby Atmos.

Disney movies including the latest Star Wars films and all the Marvel films did not have Dolby Atmos.

Does anyone know if Netflix + others will also support atmos? Don't really want to pay 25 bucks for a movie when it is also on Netflix

I agree. Today I chucked in a Bluray disc for the first time in a few weeks. I choose the Dark Knight. Wow, the sound dominated our ground floor so much that my GF who was in the kitchen asked me to turn it down.

The detail and clarity is utterly phenomenal and just reminded me of how much some movies deserves to be watched with the best audio possible. I bought the movie ten years ago but yet it sounds better than anything I've watched on Netflix, Amazon or iTunes.

Just found a non 4k title with Atmos...

Gravity.

Probably one of the best uses of Atmos and was only available on a limited run Blu-Ray release.

Checked a few of mine last night and Fury, Mission Impossible 5 and Ghost In The Shell are a few I remember having Atmos.
