Exactly. Which shows that unless Trump puts tariffs on every other country too, his action against China is pointless.

And putting (the same high) tariffs on every country pushes the world into high inflation.

Apple likely planned for this when they shifted some manufacture of iphones to india. However trump is a unknown factor and could just as easily announce a tariff on india (via a social media post, no less)

Not only that, but it invites retaliation which impacts domestic companies that export their products. As a results, in addition to inflationary pressure, economic growth slows or the economy shrinks; leading to a recession.

Australia used to have a thriving wine export market to China. Then, our prime minister at the time backed the question bout whether COVID came from China. So Xi popped a MASSIVE tariff on our wine. Result? 100% reduction in sales of Australian wine to China. Cost us billions.

So yes - now imagine Trump imposing tariffs on China... and whoever else. They will follow suit in spite. That's what happened before, and will happen again... Only someone who has no idea about international trade would think this is a good idea.

The solution is clearly to set up a department of government efficiency run by a serial liar South African tech fraudster supported by Wall Street, an Indian VC fraudster who is an unregistered foreign agent, a bowl of Joe Rogan's sweat, and Kermit the Frog for extra meme value.

it’s funny that people actually believe corporations will do the right thing and pay higher wages when profits go up.

Companies will pocket the profits, pay out to investors, give themselves raises, pat themselves on the back, then give workers the shaft and keep putting along just as we been for years.

Every time companies have been given this opportunity, this is exactly what they do and this time it will be no different.

What is driving increased profits is key. If it is an expanding economy causing increased demand than you expect increased demand for labor to meet demand, driving up wages. If it's limited supply then companies can enjoy increased profits without increased labor costs.

Tariffs will not do either, they will drive up costs and prices, spiking inflation, reducing demand and shrinking the economy.

That is on Apple. Because everybody knows that the goal is to bring jobs that have been outsourced back to the USA, to protect the American workers.

So if Apple thinks they are cute by outsourcing their jobs to India instead and then gets punished by Trump for it, it is on Tim.

Love the title, matters not people owning shares will make more than enough on their investments. It does not matter.

That may be the goal, but that isn't what will happen. Labor intensive manufacturing will never be competitive; and if Apple could make them competitively in the US they would. Labor intensive manufacturing is being replaced in the US by automation where that can be done. One consideration is how long will tariffs last? Before companies are going to invest in US manufacturing and adjust supply lines the need assurances they will last long enough to recoup such an investment; in addition, the concern foreign products will become cheaper when they are dropped and thus they will once again be uncompetitive will give them pause before they invest.

All tariffs will do is raise prices and increase inflation, and possibly result in a recession. People should be asking "What will be the impact on my budget if prices go up 10% or more?"

Even things viewed as 'Made in USA,' such as cars and trucks contain parts from Mexico and Canada; parts which may have crossed the border several times before final assembly. Fortunately, Trump's free trade deal prevents putting tariffs on US-Canada-Mexico trade; except in specific circumstances.

So if Apple thinks they are cute by outsourcing their jobs to India instead and then gets punished by Trump for it, it is on Tim.

The American consumer will be the one punished.

Absolutely.

Profit at all cost. That's what businesses want. It's a rare day you find a business in a capitalist economy that cares about its workers.

Not for profits maybe. But not necessarily...

Nobody is Trump's friend and he is not anyone's.

At that level of wealth nobody likes each other. They all pat the back for favours for the cameras but they all hate each other. Their hearts are incapable of friendship or feelings.
You are right. Until you actually know or work with an Elite Rich Person, you really can't experience the kind of feeling they have for non elite people. Think of an Ant walking around and getting stepped on if you're in the way. lol

Returning production to the US however is not a viable option, unless you're happy to pay a $*#! more money for your already top of the market Apple goods.

Trump and everyone who accepts his solutions are delusional to think that bringing production back to America is going to make America great again. Americans don't want to work in a factory for US$7/hr. That is the reality of Trump's vision.

I worked for a lady who was like that, and she wasn't even actually all that rich. $3,500 per week was her take out of the business, and she only sold it in the end for $8m. She sure as hell wanted you to give 150% of your life to her business, even though she never paid a cent of overtime, just made promises of time in lieu that she never honoured, and if you happened to need a sick day, she looked at you like were the **** she stepped on.

What trump doesn't understand...

Tim Cook paraphrase "Apple require precise TOOLING. In the USA if we were to meet with experts I doubt we coudl fill a room.. In china it would be multiple football fields"

Having worked with china. This is utterly true. The USA and to to a lesser extent Europe, the skills are just not there.

Precision tooling in China but not the U.S.? Have you ever bought anything on Amazon with a name similar to "RANGHYUII?" Is that the precision you're referring to?

@tridley68 Do you have any feedback, or you know, grounded fiscal commentary to add to your dislike to my statement that Americans don't want to work for $7/hr? (Or pay a lot more for their iPhones then they currently do.)

If Apple has to bring its production to the USA, please do share with the class how it's going to be cheaper than what can be done in countries that don't have as high living standards, and as high standards for the rights of workers as America. (Oh wait... I was thinking of non-American countries for the last one... my bad.)
