The earth is flat you know.

People forget about mining for rare earth metals, most mines in the US have either closed they doors or on such a small scale due to the key metals needed to produce electronics.

Did you mean China has better environmental regulations ?

Improving, yes. Rejecting or reducing the import of other nations trash, recycling and trying to clean its air quality, it’s a step in some direction.

Economically, Tariffs usually aren’t the best way of going about things.

Is this going to bring back jobs to America, probably not. Will this increase prices for American consumers, probably yes. Increased prices can mean less spending. Less spending can lead to less jobs. Not saying that this is going to happen in this case, but these are potential outcomes.

The problem with Trump is that he’s made it clear that he doesn’t really understand how tariffs work.

Is not lifting the tariff on Apple a bad idea? I can’t see this having huge ramifications for Apple.

Did I Trump put a measured and intelligent amount of thought into this? No.

You can’t do free trade between a first world country and a third world country.
It won’t be balanced.

First world has minimum wage, environmental regulations, labor regulations, etc

Third world has none or very little.

Free trade only works between countries with similar attributes for it to be balanced.

The infrastructure to build in the US simply doesn't exist.

That's BS. Apple has been the most valuable company in the world for the better part of the past decade and are still top 3. They built the trash can here, surely they can figure out the box designed Mac Pro.

Would it cost them margin and ROI to build it here at the same price? Sure. Probably a lot. But this concept that it can't be done.....I don't buy it.

No but from a Gub'ment stand point it is. The masses gripe if you raise taxes, so this is how they raise taxes without raising taxes. Tariffs = mo' money for the Gub'ment. Because China is supposed to pay those taxes, people don't complain. China passes on the expenses to the businesses whom in turn passes it on to the consumers. So the consumers, we the people, pay in to the hidden taxes. Tariffs, the Rube Goldberg method of taxing the people.

Except China is not a third world country. Not at all.

China is never on the hook for the tariffs. The companies importing the product pay the tariffs. It’s not difficult to understand; Apple will collect the tariff and pay the US government.

Apple will also most likely raise prices to cover at least some of the tariff. China is not directly affected by the tariff. If Apple orders fewer parts or moves production, then China would be indirectly affected by the tariff.

Tariffs are imposed on US companies who in turn raise prices to compensate so it’s hurting us not China. Building it in China and paying the higher tariffs would increase the cost for consumers. Building it in the US would also increase the cost for consumers. It’s a no-win scenario. People keep saying that Apple can afford to do this or that but don’t consider that it is going to cost them more to buy these products. It’s not apple that is going to pay the price in the end. The same goes for any company and any product. No company is going to pay the difference out of the goodness of their hearts, they are going to make up for it somehow.

Except that the tariffs are hurting China as people are buying less. Their economy is tanking because of it.

In a tweet, U.S. President Donald Trump has said that Apple will not be granted tariff exemptions or relief on Mac Pro parts made in China.

Earlier this month, Apple requested the Trump administration to exclude components for the new Mac Pro and various accessories like the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad from being subject to a 25 percent tariff on Chinese imports, according to filings with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.

In all of its exclusion requests, Apple indicated that "there are no other sources for this proprietary, Apple-designed component."

The new Mac Pro will be assembled in China by contract manufacturer Quanta Computer, according to The Wall Street Journal. The current Mac Pro, released in 2013, has been assembled in Texas since its release and is Apple's only major hardware product manufactured in the United States.

Last month, an Apple spokesperson said "final assembly is only one part of the manufacturing process," adding that the new Mac Pro is designed and engineered in the United States and includes some U.S.-made components.

Why not sell it as a kit (optional) ??

Most of us can handle a simple screw driver if it saves 2K in manufacturing costs..

Sounds like the president - and a lot of people here - don't understand that many parts can't be made here - there's no infrastructure to do so. Just saying "make them here" can't produce the factories and engineering knowledge needed to do so.

Well, in about 6 more years you never have to be concerned about his spelling again.

Hopefully only one.

Hooefully much longer...then Trump Jr, then Eric, then Ivanka, and then Barron!!!

Crying tears of joy. How can Apple get supplies in America? Yes they can. Not only that, Apple will eat the cost. Bring jobs back to the best country in the world. America.

Of course no serious professional is going to use a Mac Pro. Stop it. No one uses Final Cut Pro. Stop it. No one uses Macs for scientific work. I visited my wife’s lab once where they are conducting cancer research. They were outfitted with all Macs. No wonder cancer research is so expensive. They are spending them on iMac Pros!!!

Anyway. Of course I wouldn’t want any of my children working in factories. But some lesser folks can.

ugh.

The president cannot spell waiver correctly.

Or maybe he can, but prefers not. There's also no reason for him to speak with a Queens NY accent. The exclusive schools he attended would have encouraged neither poor spelling nor a working-class accent. The wealthy with whom he has socialized since birth generally do not write or speak this way. (I wonder whether his sister the ex-judge spoke that way from the bench?)

It's not a typo - typos are unintentional. Anyone who cares to type accurately, can. The Leader of the Free World has the resources to issue letter-perfect statements (especially when tweet-length). The White House budget has room for a staff writer on the graveyard shift, "John/Jane, clean this up, then post it!" I think misspellings and grossly ungrammatical phrases signal to his fans that he's speaking in the moment, from his heart (and theirs).

To one extent or another, we all adopt a public persona, whether to fit in with our friends and associates, or to deal with the public. His sloppy-seeming tweets are all part of his chosen brand; his "voice" as a writer, if you will.

To some, that voice makes him a "man of the people." That same audience would see someone complaining about/correcting his spelling and grammar as part of the hated Elite.
