Trump is a clown.

Having said that -- good. Keep the jobs in America. Pay American wages. Operate under American labor / safety laws. Abide by American environmental regulations.

That sounds good as a campaign slogan. But in reality what would happen is the cost would be transferred over to you.

Trump is right. Make it in the USA. Apple is getting plenty of tax breaks

I think the best part of all of this is that we have a Republican imposing tax increases with not so much as a whimper from the Tea Party.

That is what a tariff is, after all; little different than a sales tax or excise tax. While such taxes can be used in part to encourage/discourage certain kinds of behavior (just as tax deductions can be used to encourage other behavior), to the extent that people are willing to pay the tax to have the goods, tariffs raise money. The excise taxes on gas, tobacco, and alcoholic beverages haven't stopped most people from driving, smoking, or drinking. Until around 1913 tariffs and excise taxes brought in the majority of US government revenue.

Everything else is smoke and mirrors.

Fun fact: The Boston Tea Party wasn't held to protest an increased tax. Some protested because, although the 1773 Tea Act cut taxes on tea, there was still some tax remaining. Others protested because the main effect of the Tea Act was to undercut the price of tax-free smuggled tea. The British East India Company had a huge surplus of tea in the UK, and they needed to move it out of the warehouses. Parliament essentially gave BEIC a company-specific tax break.

It seems you guys don’t understand that this is a product that millions of filmmakers and content creators around the world have wanted for the last 6 years. Have you ever sat down and read the credits at the end of a movie? Lots of names, right? Every one of those people wants this computer. You’re massively underestimating the amount of people who are excited for the Mac Pro.

Just because it’s not intended for you doesn’t mean it lacks a target market. This thing’s going to sell like crazy.

Yeah those makeup artists and truck drivers are just waiting on the edge of their seats for these new Mac Pros that will cost 1/5 of their yearly salary.

You're massively overestimating the amount of people who want/need this.

Crying tears of joy. How can Apple get supplies in America? Yes they can. Not only that, Apple will eat the cost. Bring jobs back to the best country in the world. America.

Of course no serious professional is going to use a Mac Pro. Stop it. No one uses Final Cut Pro. Stop it. No one uses Macs for scientific work. I visited my wife’s lab once where they are conducting cancer research. They were outfitted with all Macs. No wonder cancer research is so expensive. They are spending them on iMac Pros!!!

Anyway. Of course I wouldn’t want any of my children working in factories. But some lesser folks can.
Who are lesser folks?

Trump is NOT a clown.
He very much is a clown

That's a valid observation.

Another Observation: A Republican President trying to incentivize American companies to hire locally and generate working-class jobs (something the dems should be cheering?). It seems that since the 90s(at least) both parties catered to non-working-class concerns.

While I get your sentiment it isn't going to happen. Production shifts to Vietnam, Mexico or other lower cost producers. At bets we'll get a high tech assembly line that employees a handful of skilled technicians. US Labor is simply too expensive to do the kind of labor intensive work done overseas; even China is starting to feel pressure from cheaper locations.

Tariffs don't do that overall and are simply a new tax on consumers.

As a libertarian, I agree.

I suppose I didn't make it clear in my previous post that what's unique with President Trump seems to be that he's making an argument for working-class jobs (whether or not its a valid argument is debatable). The dems seemed to be content with inflating government power for purposes of redistribution with robinhood-like taxes/policies, but they hardly-ever used the levers of power to incentivize private-sector working-class jobs (at least i dont remember that argument being made publicly anyway).

so they move the manufacturing to China to increase profits- then are zapped with a 25% tariff for doing so. Serves them right.
There's no way they'll increase the price of the $6000 base mMP to $7500 to offset the tariff, $6K is way overpriced as it is.

The mMP is officially now an Apple Boondogle. Either they don't make a worthwhile profit selling it at the original price, or they jack up the price and hardly anyone buys it.

Good for Trump, I hope he extends the same answer to anyone else who asks the same request! Support American Jobs!

Wish our pathetic excuse for a parliament in the UK was like that, it remains to be seen if Boris does what he says.... they have lost a LOT of the public’s trust over the last 3 years or more.

Disagree. We've had a 25% tariff on "light trucks" (70% of the US automobile market) for 55 years. Works wonderfully. 2/3 of US sold Hondas are built here, 56% of Toyotas (87% inside NAFTA). The US supply chain has been maintained. There's US sheet metal companies, Toyota transmission plants, know somebody who works at a head gasket plant, you can go to the University of Michigan to study automotive engineering and manufacturing...

The strong and consistently applied automobile tariff kept automobile manufacturing alive. We made our electronics here in the US until Clinton let it slip to China in the 1990s.

Yes, it made the truck market in the US stronger but not really more viable long term. The "chicken tax" has also resulted in much higher prices for trucks; and resulted in manufacturers pretty much giving up on cars in the US in favor of trucks since the profit margin is so much higher. Even so, the only truck in the top 10 made in USA list is the F150 and Honda. Others are made outside of the US in NAFTA countries and reimported. US Car companies love the tariff because it enables them to keep profit margins high. They could lower prices but why bother if there is no real competition.

The challenge is rising gas prices resulted in a drop in demand long term and all of a sudden all those profits go away and they have no US made cars to compete with imports or foreign manufacturers making cars in the south. US companies are essentially a monoculture.

The real challenge for them is the Chines car market and what tariffs and other rules will impact their presence there, given it is a huge growth market they want to tap.

As for going to Michigan, I wouldn't wish that on my worse enemy...

When I think of the likes of Red Skelton, Bobo Barnett and Benny Hill, calling Trump a clown is indeed very insulting to those great entertainers.

Trump isn't even worthy of hold the over-sized shoes of fictional clowns like Krusty, Pennywise or the Joker.

Clowns at least intend to bring joy and happiness to everyone they meet

What’s really hilarious about this hole topic is people still don’t realize the spelling mistakes are intentional. People who don’t even like Trump will spread the fundamental message while being spelling/grammar n@zis which everyone hates. It’s brilliant on his part... the only bad press is no press. Scott Adams has discussed this many times.
