To each his/her own--I was actually thinking I might have the same reaction to the pencil, but I couldn't have been more surprised by how much I'm using. There are some days where it feels like it never leaves my hand.

I initially bought the Pencil because I wanted to evaluate the iPad Pro with ALL the accessories at my disposal (including the adapters for SD cards and all that stuff). I half expected to return it, but I have been in Paper using the Pencil just about every single night. I'm not a very good artist, but I can kill hours at a time without realizing it just messing around with the different brushes and colors.

There have been stretches where it just sits in my bag, but when I want the Pencil, I sure am glad I have it. I consider it to be one of the main benefits of owning the Pro.

2 have been lost, 2 have been taken. I'm on my 5th Apple Pencil. $500 is a LOT to spend on styluses. Ouch.

It's actually the other way around. This is exactly WHY the Pencil is NOT included with the iPad Pro! Because many people might want the iPP... but have no need for a Pencil. So why would Apple increase the price of the iPP for people who don't need the Pencil?
what I'm saying is is should be included in the box at no extra cost.(or little extra, maybe half the current price of pencil).after all it's an iPad Pro..and thats the norm with all other devices with an stylus.why not with iPad Pro? then users can choose not to use it if they don't want to.

Don't think I'll ever tire of the Pencil, but then I purchased mine knowing that I'd have use for it.

I don't think it's the sort of thing you should spend money on just because, I think you need to know you're going to be using it to make it a worthwhile investment.

I also like the pencil, I found it irksome when the functionality was removed in iOS 9.3. Pages cannot be turned in iBooks using the pencil, must of it with finger, which leaves fingerprint oil on the screen.

Yeah, I think it's probably part of their focus on it not being a general purpose stylus.

Saying that, I've found you can still swipe with PDFs and if you just tap the edges of the screen in iBooks, instead of swiping, it still turns the pages with the Pencil.

I'm loving my pencil! Never have I loved a $100 pencil quite so much. Oh wait...

Seriously though, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it, and I'm definitely getting my use out of it.

Not quite as sharp as the real thing for poking annoying students in the arm with though, maybe some sort of pin attachment is called for :D
Reminds me of my own elementary school teacher. She had quite an arm on her, and could strike a sleeping student squarely between the eyes with a well-flung piece of chalk.

But today, schools are much stricter and draw the line in the sand when it comes to touching the students, so no, I wouldn't prod with with a pen however much I feel like it at times.

Aye changed days, my teachers were fond of wooden rulers, chalkboard dusters and a particularly nasty leather belt from the headmaster.

..... So I've heard that is, I never misbehaved, no no no, good boy I was

I see. You just want the best technology for free. Makes sense.

The Pencil is not like other styluses and is worth every penny of that $100. There are even many "dumb" styluses that approach that price... they don't even come within 1% of the writing experience of the Pencil.

As usual Apple put out the very best product on the market and they price it that way. People who see the value proposition and have the means will purchase it and be happy about it.

I'm sooooooooooooo tired of that pencil! I bought it with no plans to use it and now I am out a hundred dollars...AND...I have to recharge the it! Apple has really crossed a line here.

Do I detect just a teeny, slight hint of someone pushing their check with their tongue :D

Of course if your serious I do see your point, I've just grabbed an HB Pencil from my desk and I had no problems at all scrawling all over my iPads screen with it, so exactly why does Apples version cost 99.90 more? Somethings definitely afoot there and I'm not talking 12 inches.

Totally, completely and utterly the truth.

I had an Adonit Jot Touch (before they dropped the price) and compared to the Pencil it might as well have been a broken finger.

Don't get me wrong, at the time (not long ago by any means) it was about as good as they got and it was nice to use a stylus with the iPad.

But compared to the Pencil it's night and day. Even now the Touch is only $20 less than the Pencil and I'd call that poor value for money compared to the price of the more expensive Pencil.

I want the best product for free? No I didn't say that.we are already paying premium for the iPad Pro and that pencil is the highlight of this new iPad.it should have been included for either no extra cost or slight increase.
I'm well aware it's much more advanced compared to other styluses in the market but nevertheless it is an stylus.and to charge $100 extra for it is just pure greed.you cannot argue with that.
point is they are already charging people for the iPad Pro and this stylus IS a part of the iPad Pro.
you see things differently obviously.

I'm afraid I see things differently also then, I most certainly don't think it should have been a free bundled item, it's an optional accessory, not something that renders the iPad useless by its absence.

Should they also include the Smart Keyboard, cover, case, av adapter, USB adapter and any other products Apple also happen to make for free as well? Or maybe all stylus manufacturers should be offering their products for free. What right does any company have to charge a fee for a product, it's beyond ridiculous.

To charge money for an accessory is most certainly not greed. To expect products for free just because you want them is a very serious case of entitlement.

No, it shouldn't be included. Many people want a Pro without a pencil. It would be stupid on the part of Apple to force people to have it at even. Fraction of the cost. Apple's in business to make money.

I love the pencil.

Loving my scribbles using the Pencil during lectures! It seems way better than the old Jot Pros, even though back then my peers were ridiculing me for having such 'expensive' styluses.
As a lot of people have said, it's worth every penny :)

I'd be most upset without my Pencil. Never embraced a stylus since day 1, but the Pencil certainly changes everything for me.

General nav being no.1 usage.
Note taking coming a close second.
Sketching/drawing a distance 3rd.

Awesome.

thats your opinion and many disagree.
if it was included for no extra cost or just ($50 extra on price) the iPad Pro would differentiate better from rest of iPads and the whole Pro name would have made much more sense.
those who didn't need the pencil could just ignore it.
it would attract more interest I'm sure, sell more units thus more profit for Apple.

Then there would be threads complaing about the increased price, and why did Apple include a pencil they did not want.

Separate is good. Keeps the cost down for those that don't need it. As many have said, there are styluses that cost not much less, and come no where near the functionality of the Apple pencil. For me it is a great addition.

Bad solution to a problem that doesn't exist. For one thing there's no way they'd put it in for free considering its retail price. And making it mandatory and upping the price is a poor solution that would be less likely to drive sales than the other way around. Many people already have a bit of a problem with the price, why force a more expensive product onto a public that doesn't want it.

As for the Pro name, the crucial part of that is the name bit, it's not entirely literal. They have chosen it to reflect the increased power, expanded feature set and greater flexibility when you take into account things like the Pencil and to differentiate from older generation iPads. Not because it's a device just for pro users or pro applications.

Indeed it can actually be employed to make you more productive than on previous generation iPads, something I've found to be very true for myself.

But it's also, in particular the 9.7" a device targeted at normal consumers, so they needed to do something to highlight that it was a new generation of iPad capable of more than those that came before it, hence the Pro moniker. I mean, the iPad Air wasn't so named because it was made of air. It was entirely for the same reason they chose Pro, marketing, plain and simple.

...... I really shouldn't be allowed on here before my medication kicks in, clearly I'm cranky. Right, coffee and morphine then I'll be back :D

I'm not an artist, but I am a note taker. The Pencil outperforms any plain stylus, and the palm rejection just makes it the perfect accessory for notes.
This is the same for me. I use the Pencil all the time in meetings while taking notes. I'm a faster typist but find that by scripting my notes, I find my retention is better. There are many studies that also prove this out.

Well that was a disappointing click. :(

Expected: A gallery of artwork, done with the pencil.

Reality: "I bought stuff I didn't need." (again)

Riveting.
