These iPad's get outdated too fast. I bought my iPad 3 about 1,5 years ago and it's too slow already. It stutters during normal operations. However it manages to run the latest games like Infinity blade III supersmooth, so it has plenty of power for normal operations like typing or scrolling. It's just Apple crippling iPad 3 with the latest OS.

Atleast on a Macbook Pro from 4 years ago, I can install Windows 8 or go back to an older OS X if Apple cripples my 4 years old MBP with a new operating system. ( many users did go back to snow leopard when Apple released OS X Lion for example)

Just buy a MBA, 13" rMBP or an ultrabook if you need something super portable since they last much longer. You think the latest iPad runs great now, just wait and see in 2 years on the latest iOS how bad it will run.

"Let me tell you something. You're suspect. Yeah, you. I don't know what your reputation is in this town, but after the s*#@ you tried to pull today, you can bet I'll be looking into you. Now the business we have heretofore you can speak with my aforementioned attorney. Good day gentlemen, and until that day comes, keep your ear to the grindstone."

Must disagree. My iPad 2 which I've had going on 3 years now runs just as well as the day I purchased it. It running ios7 and have not had a single issue with it. I've also got the new mini so I do have something to compare it to.

Lucky! Got an iPad 2 for 3 years+ and it's kinda showing it's age now. iPad Air 2 will definitely be a worthy upgrade.

So stop whining about Apple. They haven't screwed you. That iPad 3 hasn't screwed you either.

I have to agree. I bought an iPad 3, and I was most bummed that Apple changed to a lightning connector months later since I knew that I would be living in a mixed adapter environment until I no longer had the iPad 3 (or my 4S, for that matter) - certainly a First World problem.

Then the lack of iOS 7 AirDrop support for iPad 3 was a bummer, but Instashare is better, so not sure that was a real let down. In the end, my iPad 3 is running fine on iOS 7.0.4. My wife and son, who have inherited it since I bought my rMini are more than happy. It still functions perfectly, the screen looks great, and it has been used every day, without issue, for almost 2 years straight.

Huh? The Xoom came out before the iPad 2 in Feb 2011!!

Last time I used mine it was running Jelly Bean and included all of the features that were included with Jelly Bean (Google Now etc).

The iPad 2 and my iPad 3 are running iOS 7 (poorly I might add, crossing fingers for 7.1) with many features removed.

I love the iPad but that is a very bad example since in reality the Xoom is doing better. And running better since every update has increased performance, after project butter it probably better then it was when it was new. I wish I could say that about my iPad 3.

Let's also not forget the iPad 3 is a bit underpowered for the retina display too.

Is the Xoom seriously getting better with new releases?

I bought it at release, and remember being pretty let down for a few months with it. Widgets would bog it down as I remember, and the stuttering - OMG. I switched for a Galaxy Tab 10.1, and enjoyed it much more. It still stuttered (not quite like the Xoom), but it was much better than the Xoom.

Anyway, just curious.

I doubt I'll go back to an Android tablet, since I'm now too spoiled with the apps on iPad, and the aspect ratio is ideal for sheet music/reading. Plus iTunes University, also that the app store offers many more free/discounted apps than google/Amazon free app a day.

Not that it is going to solve all of the world's problems and such, but iOS 7.1 Beta 5 is very stable. They have ironed out a lot of the kinks. All devices will be better because of it.

Pretty much this. The problem hasn't been so much not enough RAM as it's been poor iOS7 optimization. The iPhone 5S has the same internals and doesn't suffer nearly as many crash stories. It's pretty well understood that iOS7 was built with iPhone in mind and then shoehorned into iPad to get it out in time. Betas of 7.1 are showing a lot of performance improvement on iPads.

No idea how people decided there wasn't enough RAM. Was it just because Apple didn't increase the RAM from iPad 4?

Also curious where people heard that iPad Air 2 will have 2gb ram. Apple hasn't said anything about it. There's a lot of speculation and guessing going on in here.

Good to read about 7.1 showing promise. I just wait for the official release and don't concern myself with the betas because they are only that.

Don't buy an iPad

If you say so, I absolutely won't buy one. How could I fly in the face of an order like that!

Oh...wait...I have an iPad 4, and I really like it. I enjoy the various functions that it offers, and iOS 7 is just fine with me.

Please...do I have to throw it away, or is it OK if I keep it as long as I promise to never buy one again?

  :p

That iPad 3 hasn't screwed you either. That MacBook Pro from a few years back? Yes, it definitely has more life than an iPad, as it is a full framed computer with a full-framed price tag. But go run a 3 year old MacBook pro with MAX specs next to a Baseline 13" MacBook Pro with Retina Display. The baseline Mac from 2014 will easily outperform it. Simple revolving technology. It's a good thing.

Hope this insight helps.

I don't mean to come off as pedantic, but the maxed out early 2011 MacBook Pro had an i7-2820qm, which is far, far faster than the i5-4258 in the new rMBP. The 2011 model would also have 4x the memory, a better GPU, and 4x the SSD space (though it would be a bit slower).

I think most people here missed his main point. He said "they get outdated too fast". Compared to a MBP or MBA they do!

I've had my MBA for 3 years now and it's working just as well as it did when I first got it. I use it everyday for work and love it. In that time I've bought 2 iPads. Says it all. The iPad gives me nowhere near the return on investment that my Air gives me. I can see me keeping the Air another 1-2 years.

The kind of investment you make in a MBA is heavier than an iPad. I think whilst we don't like to admit it, lots of us will be too tempted again by a new iPad release.

I'm in the same boat... my 4 year old iPad 1 struggles with even basic web pages and apps, and isn't even remotely the same device a new one would be.

Yet my 6 year old PC runs very well at anything I throw at it (music editing with FL Studio, RAW image editing with Lightroom, casual gaming). Granted, spending $100 on an SSD helped wonders with OS and application speed.

Ios 7.1 runs much smoother on the 3rg gen. Try it with a clean install. I have 3rd gen, 4th gen, Air, mini & retina mini and 7.1 is definitely an improvement across the board. Notebooks and tablets have different use cases and very different price points. I don't think telling someone to not buy an iPad for £300 but to go and spend £999 on a notebook is very helpful to be honest.

Do you already have 7.1? It's not out in general release yet as far as I know.?...

I don't know if I said this already but...

the first iPad was underpowered at release, I believe the iphone had 2x the RAM it had even though both cost about the same.

After that every iPad survives about 2 years providing very good performance, which is long enough time for me.

say you buy an iPad for $500 , use it for 2 years then sell it for $200 :
$300 / 24 months = So you pay about $12.5 a month for using an iPad, which is not bad considering that is like 2 cups of starbucks a month

Ah yes, the pesky RAM thing. People just all became software engineers overnight and "decided" the RAM quantity was the problem. Of course they had zero tangible data to support that but it sounded good. Truthfully, you are correct in stating that's it's an OS 7 issue and the next OS update will take care of many of the safari issues people are seeing.

I don't even think the second gen Air will have more RAM. With optimizations it probably doesn't need it. We shall see.

7.1 appears to fix most restart/crash issues, yet the rapid reloads remain. Over a year of engineering being placed on this, and the reloads persist.

So at what point will apple get the optimized iOS to make the browsing user experience the best in the world? I'll wait for your Defense of the RAM.

iPad 1 and now iPad 3 will probably be the ugly step child of the iPad family.

iPad 1 was only supported from April 2010-Sept 2012 and support stopped at iOS 5.

iPad 3 will probably suffer the same fate. The A5X is just a modified A5 with quad core graphics but it's a wash cause it has to power the retina screen as opposed to iPad 2 non retina screen. 1gb of ram does help but I can't imagine it getting more than limited ios8 support. It will get iOS 8 but a stripped down version.

I do think iPad 4 with its a6x processor has plenty of juice left in it.

I have owned every iPad.

I don't really have a defense for anything. I just believe software updates can and should fix this issue.

Keep in mind they are still working on 7.1. Its in beta mode which means more tweaking to come. Perhaps the reloading issue will also be corrected?

Let's wait and see. Neither me, you, or anyone knows for SURE what the issue truly is!

VERY true.

But as times goes by, and the reload issue persists, I will lean more and more towards a RAM issue.

Ya know, we've both been discussing this problem for a while, Mr. Blah. If an OS update comes out and does NOT take care of it....I will concede and come over to the "not enough RAM" side once and for all!

Fair enough? :D

Deal.

It's nice dealing with nice folks.

Have a good one.
