I have a friend who has a Motorola StarTAC 7000 still in use. His wife has an Iphone 5s. His phone gets more stares. He refuses to give up his 'communicator'.

These iPad's get outdated too fast. I bought my iPad 3 about 1,5 years ago and it's too slow already. It stutters during normal operations. However it manages to run the latest games like Infinity blade III supersmooth, so it has plenty of power for normal operations like typing or scrolling. It's just Apple crippling iPad 3 with the latest OS.

Atleast on a Macbook Pro from 4 years ago, I can install Windows 8 or go back to an older OS X if Apple cripples my 4 years old MBP with a new operating system. ( many users did go back to snow leopard when Apple released OS X Lion for example)

Just buy a MBA, 13" rMBP or an ultrabook if you need something super portable since they last much longer. You think the latest iPad runs great now, just wait and see in 2 years on the latest iOS how bad it will run.

I guess this deserves an update with iOS 7.1 released now.

My iPad 3 is functioning much better with this latest OS. It's not as fast like iOS 6, but atleast it's useable now. It's responsive and smooth again.

As a MacBook user myself, I don't see how we can compare premium $2000+ laptops with tablets, which are basically just big cell phones with low processing power (compared to a MacBook pro), that being said I haven't been able to trip up my air yet /crosses fingers.

I feel iOS 7.1 has made my 3rd gen iPad work very well again (so glad because it's a 64gb 4G model that I didn't want to give up on or sell so soon after purchasing it)...it also made my 16gb 4G 4th gen work much better also!

LOL, welcome to world of being "suckered" by Apple. I will never, ever purchase an iPad for myself.

That's why I wait to find "clearance prices" on NIB :apple: products before purchasing then:p

iPad 2 owner here. Upgraded from a JB iOS6 to iOS7.1 last night. Colour me impressed, it's like a completely new iPad! (except for the low res screen). Navigating around the OS is super smooth and Safari is much quicker. This should hopefully make the wait for the Air2 easier...

I made a comment earlier and i'll say it again. I have an iPad 2 I purchased back in 2012 from Apple as a refurb and I purchased a new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 back when it was released mid 2011. The Galaxy Tab is pretty much a paperweight and just sputters using Google Chrome.

My iPad 2 runs really smooth with iOS 7.0.4 and it's about a 3 year old machine.

The tab 2 10.1 (2012) isn't doing much better. I had to get rid of mine this year because it wasn't good for anything but watching videos.

My ipad mini, same internals as ipad 2 is still the fully fledged tablet it was a year and a half ago. My friend has an ipad 2 and that is also buttery smooth. All products get outdated in time, however you are much better off with an iOS device if longevity is important to you.

I'd rather buy an ipad 2 (2011) right now than a galaxy tab 3 10.1 (2013).

There is also the matter of usage/workflow improvements in the value ... I use my iPad more than anything else and consider I get very good value for the price. And, while I might replace it sooner than a computer it is also cheaper to replace. A family member now has my ipad2, running latest IOS, works perfectly.

Given its primary function of surfing the internet and replying emails, I find it difficult to agree with you.

Sure, a new version comes out every year, but it doesn't mean you must buy it. There is a new Corolla every year, but it doesn't mean you have to buy every iteration of the thing. Your old Corolla still takes you from point A to point B just as your old iPad still checks emails and surfs the web.

If you must do street racing... err.. I mean play games, then you are better off with a different car,.. I mean device, damnit!

I mostly agree with you. No need to upgrade every year. People seem more mad at the fact that they can't stop themselves from wanting the newest device versus actually having to buy it. In other words, they don't want apple to make a new device since it makes them pressured to buy one. This isn't just a tablet thing either. Just about every electronic gets "outdated" quickly.

Just keep using the thing until it stops working which I suspect will be quite a while. I held onto my iPad 2 for over two years before getting an Air. I'll have the Air for at least that long if not longer.

You should be able to get 3 years of use out of iPads. Which isn't bad. Considering most notebooks last around 4-5 years.

I find a huge difference between my iPad 4 and my MacBook Pro. It's like a world of difference.

I use tablets for fun, and my laptop to get some serious work done. I, for example, can't code on a tablet, so it's entirely a different animal.

I used to have one of those starTac's, first cell phone I ever owned. Rock on.

In regard to the iPads, they will never be able to compete with laptops or desktops and nor do I expect that. My tablets are used for school work and for fun, half toy/half study tool and that's what they will always be.

Some of us remember the PC speed wars of the later 80's and early 90's when the 486 and then 586/Pentium clock speeds would increase every few months AND you were dropping $2,000+ for a desktop PC and monitor.
$500 every two or three years for a tablet is a small investment in technology from a historical perspective.

The thing that bothers me about the iPad 3 is it was a clearly half baked product so instead of improving it before releasing it [strongly believe the iPad 4 was the intended iPad 3]is in my opinion] they just threw it out there with ridiculous charge times, poor screen quality control and zero improvement on the processor [every other release had a significant improvement with a new processor the iPad 3 is the only one that offers nothing].

I feel like an idiot for buying it actually but haven't made that mistake again as I have never bought an apple product since.

...we'll then don't purchase anything from Sony, their CS experience is non-existent after you walk out of the store...even on high end TV and laptop items (which is why they constantly lose money every FY and are dumping their laptop division at the end of this year)!

I have an iPad3 & iPad4 and the screen quality has an un-noticeable difference to it...the A5x is a slower SoC than the A6x SoC so fortunately the iOS 7.1 update made the iPad 3 fluid feeling again although it is easy to tell which iPad I'm using (they are both in the same type of case (and color).

While I too sometimes wish I hadn't purchased an iPad3, I got it on a clearance price of an 18% discount NIB as it was miss-marked sitting on the shelf and it was a 64Gb 4G model = coming from my original iPad 32Gb 3G model it was still a good upgrade at the time and with iOS 7.1 I don't feel the "need" to dump it yet....

When the iPad Air's & rMini's came out I was tempted by the latest and greatest, but...

...I was able to snag a NIB iPad4 16Gb 4G model for $330 so my original iPad went to a family member and I use the larger iPad3 for mobile movies and music while the iPad4 is my "daily use/gaming" iPad.

Wow, ain't that the truth! Remember that nonsense? I remember trying to play that game a little bit and it was costly and disappointing. Great point about what we pay for tablets versus those damned desktops. We should be happy and I sure am. I'll get a LOT more than a few years out my tablets. My daughter is still having a blast with my iPad 2 and that was purchased shortly after it was released. It's just fine. Many more years to go until it's truly useless.

I disagree, I have an iPad 2 and it still runs fine on iOS 7. iOS 7.1 has improved it even further. The only reason for me to upgrade would be the retina display. As far as the processor goes , I think it holds up very well. In fact I had more crashes on my iPad mini with retina display on iOS 7 than my iPad 2 . This problem was due to the 64bit processor and seems to have resolved with iOS 7.1. I still feel the iPad 2 is a fantastic device. I can't speak for an iPad 3 but I think iOS 7.1 and installation as new device should make it run faster

iPad 3 surely is the worst iPad released so far.
It was half-baked in a way ....
First generation iPad mini comes in second position (iPad 2 hardware on a tablet released at the end of 2012, I don't like it since iPad 3 hardware and iPad 4 was already available)

Actually the iPad 3 isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I still have my iPad 3 and tbh, it's pretty quick but then again it's still running iOS 5.1.1 :)

I know, it's not bad at all, it was just released in the wrong time between iPad 2 (that still was a good tablet at the time) and the iPad 4 (that was a more "complete" product).

Must disagree. My ipad 2 which I've had going on 3 years now runs just as well as the day I purchased it. It running ios7 and have not had a single issue with it. I've also got the new mini so I do have something to compare it to.

Same here, my wife and kids ipads are all ipads 2 and they run just fine, i also have an ipad mini and it runs great too...

What's so half-baked about it? 2048x1536 10" screen on a mobile OS was very impressive for the time, I don't recall any mass "gate" issues and it was as fast as the iPad 2.

iOS 7 is TERRIBLE on all iPads.
