I just brought my retina MacBook Pro 2.7/16gb/768ssd in to an apple genius to go over the lag issues and the IR. I showed him the stuttering on iGPU and the smoothness on dGPU and he said it seems like the iGPU is having issues handling the display. He was then going to connect it to their network via ethernet to run some hardware tests and he couldn't get it connected via USB or Ethernet/thunderbolt. He also saw the screen distorted towards the bottom.

He couldn't perform any test and said since I paid over $4000 for a maxed out spec rmbp he would exchange or return. I told him I was within the 14 days and I would return it. He agreed and also agreed when I said I think it's best to wait for the next refresh model since this is the first production run of these models.

:(

It's 4 times as "capable" to me because I can see 4 times more pixels on the screen.

But in terms of performance, the GPU is actually more than 4 times as powerful. It's only the CPU that's "only twice as powerful".

And I don't disagree. But here's the kicker: does the construction worker absolutely need a Retina MacBook Pro? Is he forced to buy one? Does he just want it?

If the construction worker "needs" the machine, or is "forced" to purchase one, either because his job requires him to view very detailed CAD drawings, or because he is more productive with a more powerful computer, then... it actually "helps" his productivity, and increased productivity means increased return, right? So in which case, I think he still "gains". When you work in any field, I think any "gain" in productivity is appreciable. Be it small or not.

If the construction worker just wants the machine, then he has to rationalize the purchase. In which case, he has already thought about the loss and gain, and I don't think anyone can, or should, criticize him for his decision. They are not in his shoes. Who knows, he might have a secret bank account in Switzerland.

What I'm trying to say is... how you see the world is not how everyone else does. Maybe you don't find people's purchases justified, but it's their decisions to make.

Well, there is a fair amount of rationalization in that post. Not to mention a rather dubious conflation of "pixel count" with increased capability. But then again, there is a lot of that going around in this forum.

Yeah, I suppose that I do see the world differently from the majority of consumers. That's good for Apple and its ilk who will continue to turn out expensive toys for people to buy, whether they can afford to do so or not.

If the screen is not 4x better, I guess you're saying going from 320 x 240 to 640 x 480 isn't 4x better either?

Nor is going from 640 x 480 to 1280 x 960?

In that case, why do you even own a Mac computer with a 1280 x 800? 640 x 400 should be just fine.

640x400 is no good for anyone! Not sure why the argument of screen quality is still aroun.d

I agree that

this thread is a joke. Have had my MBP Retina (Samsung screen) since it was launched and have 0 issues. Only "bug" is that it doesn't always wake up instantly, takes a few seconds... thats it.

Have they checked for IR with a dark gray desktop wallpaper? I GUARANTEE they will produce IR in the coming days, weeks, or months to come. I have received 11/13 rMBP units that were LGs, including the one I'm currently using and I have produced IR in each one between 2 days to up to 2 months. I even had 2 repairs of 1/2 being an LG display and it produced IR within a few days. In addition, over time the ghosting will get worse. You are very fortunate to own a Samsung, although I'm not entirely certain you own a perfect screen. You could probably have additional defects such as yellow/pinkish tints and especially backlight bleeding that I've seen on 3/4 Samsung screens I owned temporarily.

I will wait patiently for what Apple has in store for us this coming Tuesday. We'll see if Apple has finally made things right and resolved heat dissipation and display issues. It will be utterly disappointing if Apple continues to consider this anomaly being a "feature" since a 13" rMBP will accomodate more sales, possibly double or triple the 15" rMBP.

Perfect screen? wonder what that means... Now, seriously, this is getting ridiculous... You can find such horror stories in this thread....
I can assure you than none of those LGs have any single issue! As to my screen. It does not have neither backlight bleeding not any kind of noticeable tint.

And that is not ever a bug--it was designed that way to save battery power. :)

Well that's because the Samsung screens don't have this image retention issue like the LG's do.

Trolling is a freedom and a right online. Stop whining. I am happy to say I returned my maxed out 15" retina macbook barf and saved a ton of money when I got a new 17" MBP late Oct.2011 2.5Ghz i7, which then I maxed out completely and got 3 TB displays with the refund and managed to save 1200 bux. Worthless 15 inchers.

and now Samsung wont deliver more LCD panels to Apple

so this will get even worse. close to 100 % faulty displays in 2013 if this continues on.

and to those who wrote that they have perfect MBPs with samsung displays,,,,well thats what i wrote too. sammys have much less problems and no IR. its about the LGs that are *****.

I'm just glad that I wasn't in the market yet for a replacement laptop for personal use. I've only had my MBP for 2 years.

Retina display is something I want. I like the better display that higher resolutions give you. Though generally my hi res antiglare display is fine now. My only issue with the Retina display based on early reviews is it appeared that the GPU was a little underpowered for the number of pixels. I figure that, in 2 years, video performance won't be an issue anymore.

I upgraded to the rMPB recently (I waited for a model with ML preloaded, as I'm sure the third / fourth production run probably has some flaws ironed out) from a 2010 macbook air

It's a base rMPB, but so far, touch wood, no issues - I have a Samsung Screen and SSD, and this thing roars.

The only single issue I have still bugging me is: If I open my lid after 5-6 hours of sleep, it takes about 4 seconds for the login screen to be responsive.

I had this same issue on my old Macbook Air after upgrading to ML, and thought it would be resolved on the rMPB either through more robust hardware or a software update - no luck thus far. As far as issues go, it's a minor annoyance, as is Safari freezing up every third day

I'm pretty damn happy, and lucky too I guess

I get the same issue when coming back from sleep. The only other issue I get is with Google Chrome and ESPN (recap/play by play pages crawl).

I don't get what people are inspecting so closely for. You can find flaws in any product. Its made by humans. Surprise, things aren't 100%. Its a lovely product that I'd purchase over and over again.

That's actually the computer going into stand by mode after a while. This is how you are able to get 30 days stand by time. It's not sleeping, it's a little bit deeper in. Perfectly normal.

Agreed for the iGPU, not the dGPU. Still, it's wise to wait with this particular technology.

Well, the 13" Retina is massively flawed by it's price. That thing must have the fattest profit margin of any new product that Apple has ever introduced.
