Don't care:
1. I won't be looking at touch at goofy angles
2. Screen should be infinitely better than my 1st gen touch
3. Screen is small

I have to say, I think the complainers really are grasping at straws. Seriously, the iPod touch is a music player / game machine. What do you expect? 99% of laptops, where you do serious work, are not IPS displays. I work on not one, but 4 screens on a daily basis. All are 20" displays, and only one is IPS. Guess what, it only makes a difference when I look off axis.

The touch is a game device, and I am sure if I am looking at the screen it will be right in front of me. Enough of the bitching already.

This is an excellent point. Thanks for bringing this up. Not until the iPhone 4 came out did anyone care or really know what IPS was. I too work on many computers at home and at work during the course of the day and NONE are IPS. The only IPS I've ever seen was on my iPhone 4. I must admit, that screen is badass. But, it's the pixelcount that made me say oooh and ahhh. The viewing angle thing, was more of a curiousity. Like, wow, this has a really really wide viewing angle. Did I ever use that viewing angle? No. Why would I? Why would I look at my iPhone or my iPod from a hard angle?

This is a lot to do about nothing. Seriously.

My desktop display is one of the best I've ever used. 1920x1200, and looks awesome. But guess what, it's a TN panel.

TN is cheaper than IPS and is good enough for all practical purposes. This display should be awesome. It's all about the resolution.

Do you understand what normal viewing angle means ? This is my normal viewing angle and both Retina displays will look the same .

Contrast looks bad compared to iP4

Actually I thought it was a big deal when they announced the iPad had an IPS screen. Because people would be looking a photos and videos together having good off-axis color is an important feature.

It's less important on a iPod since you usually don't view the screen with other people at the same time.

Whilst I am sure there will be noticeable differences if closely scrutinized it is ridiculous to try and compare contrast between the two devices with that image. One has a black background and the other a light, one is out of focus and further from the camera not to mention possible differences in brightness setting on the two devices.

I totally agree on the iPad, IPS is a must. Apple also wanted to make the iPad extremely versatile. Maybe someone might want to hang it on a wall to display some content. You want it to be viewable from anywhere in the room.

Sure I do. I am just trying to prove a point that the iPod touch 4 does not use IPS screens like iPhone 4.

Heres a CRAZY idea how bout we compare the screens to the iphone 4, ipod touch 3rd gen/2nd gen,... When we get the stinkin ipod in less than four days. how bout that:rolleyes: So everyone stop complaining about something your judging on by photos and bad descriptions-holding/examining the actually product is the best way to judge it.

The real question is how does it look compared to the iPod touch 3rd gen. If it's better, it's a win. 4 times the pixel density sounds like a win to me.

Yes!!

Sadly, the IPS isn't really all that functional on the Ipad unless you are in a dark to dim room, the glossy screen just reflects too much. I can't use it on angle in any normal lit room and up. The IP4 and iPod Touch 4 both have the exact same pixel count. Straight on, they will look exactly the same.

For me the most important things is the contrast ratio rather than the viewing angles. I hope it is as good as the IP4

another thing ive noted is that the viewing angles only look bad when you look from under the screen.from the side it looks fine.

I'm pretty sure the higher contrast ratio is inherent to the IPS display (though MVA/PVA have even higher contrast at the expense of color reproduction. )

one less sinister reason for the TN display may be Apple's emphasis of the touch being a gaming machine - TN displays have a quicker response time, making them more appropriate for fast paced action. With that said, even on my gaming PC, I prefer an IPS display over TN any day.

The iPod Touch shoukd have the IPS display seeings as when you are using the gyroscope for games and you tilt the Touch at an extreme angle, you need to see what its on the screen so you know what your doing in the game!

Apple must of realised that! ^^

All Ipads have IPS screens too....its possible that the itouch has an IPS screen also but at least it has a retina display like the iphone 4.

Seriously. How can you speculate only on images filmed by a camera.

No camera is as high-fidelity as your eyes. Wait until you see it. And honestly, who gives a s**t? Is there really someone here who will not buy the iPod touch 4 because the display is inferior to the one used in a much more expensive product?

I really don't want/need a wide viewing angle because I don't see why the person next to me on the train/bus/tram needs to see what I'm doing but I really like the contrast improvement on the iPhone 4, if they can get that on the Touch, IPS or not, it's good enough IMO.

The footage is pretty definitive. I noticed the screen difference immediately when watching that video. And at the time, I wasn't looking at it for the screen, I just wanted to see the hands on iPod touch video. And like I said, I instantly noticed the screen. For anyone who has owned or at least used both the iPhone 4 and an older iPod touch, you fully understand how accurate that video is.

There's no argument about that video is my point. There's no argument about whether or not the new touch has IPS. It doesn't. But, as most of us are feeling, it doesn't matter worth a hill of beans anyway.

But I'll continue posting in this thread as long as it goes on because I'm enjoying it. :)

There's nothing to prove or disprove. It doesn't have IPS. That's it. But feel free to keep driving the point home, because apparently some people don't want to believe it.
