I could see it simply being a silent release on apple.com when the new iTunes is available. Apple events are based around narratives and software. If they are simply releasing a smaller iPad, there is no story, no narrative - it's simply a smaller iPad. The rationale for not mentioning at the September event was to simply protect the iPhone story.

Apple has been rapidly building out its production infrastructure in Brazil (rather than China, which is clearly reaching the stage of unrest as their middle class rises and demands better wages/conditions). I have no idea if their will be an announcement before the holidays, but I have no doubt that the production capability will be there.

Oh yes, I did forget about the Brazil factory news bit. Thanks for reminding me.
Then I think Apple could do it by Christmas. Just doesn't fall in line with how they traditionally release their products on a set schedule. The iPad mini is definitely a curveball to the Apple community.

It's a product we've been waiting for since the iPad 1. Do you really think they would just silently post it on their website without any sort of fanfare?

Yeah, I do. Look back at Apple events, how long do the actual hardware announcements last? Only a few minutes, even less if there are no dramatic features.

If all we're talking about is a smaller iPad with no retina display that is simply lighter and smaller, it's not event worthy.

I propose there were two events - the iPhone and iOS 6 event and then the iTunes/iPad/iPod event. They got squeezed into one event for scheduling sakes, and it allows them to announce the iPad Mini with a great deal of flexibility.

The moment that Apple would put that on their site, don't you think all news sites will go "breaking" over it? Absolutely.

Invites ? Who has a link that Apple (Official) was actually going to send out invites today ?

No hurry, it can be this or next week. So have some faith and patience. ;)

No official invites. Just a rumor that it may come today....

https://www.macrumors.com/2012/10/01/apples-ipad-mini-media-event-invitations-going-out-october-10/

"According to a very sketchy report from Philip Elmer-DeWitt at Apple 2.0, Apple could be sending out invitations to the launch event for the iPad mini on October 10. DeWitt notes that it's a "rumor we have no reason to believe" except that it came from a major Apple investor.

According to our source, who asked not be named, there appears to be some truth to the widespread rumors that Apple is preparing to launch a smaller and cheaper version of the iPad -- often called the iPad mini or iPad air and usually described as having a 7.85-inch screen."

"What our source adds is the specificity of a date: The press, he says, can expect invitations to go out on Oct. 10.

Well Nexus 7, here I come. Thanks Apple for helping me make my decision.

I'm inclined to buy one too. I just need a good tablet for my study, yet an iPad is too expensive, especially if a smaller and cheaper tablet could do it as well.

So, to make a choice between the nexus 7 and something that isn't yet announced you relied only on plain rumors of the announcement of the announcement date (not an error).
I guess now that you have all the elements to decide you can make a great decision! Go with it! ;)

You won't regret it. I have one and I love the thing. Its fast, battery life is great, does everything I need it to do, and is half the price of an iPad.

There’s that word again– ‘heavy’. Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth’s gravitational pull?

I'm sure that in 1985, plutonium is available in every corner drugstore, but in 1955, it's a little hard to come by.

Well the thing is I would have really preferred a mini but at this point we have no idea if/when such a device will appear. For all we know it doesn't even exist and I'm tired of waiting around. My needs are minimal - eBook reading, browsing web and email. So I may give the mini another week to see if invites go out, if nothing appears I guess I'll go ahead and get the Nexus. If then a mini does make an appearance at some point in the future, I'm sure I could always sell the Nexus or give it to my wife. In the meantime I still have my iPad 1.

since the ipad mini is most likely not happening what is the hold up with waiting for iTunes 11 till end of october?

also can they even have the event the week after the 17th because isnt there the shares call that week?

Lol @ people acting like the show's over and it's not happening.

WSJ and others are reporting it has begun production on a massive scale. A rumor about a specific date from a sketchy source was wrong. Call me when WSJ (Apple's PR outlet in many cases) is wrong.

Oh it'll be out, first run of production to be 10 Million units, sales will be brisk, Christmas will sport trees with many minis underneath them, if it includes a Retina Screen, and 4G, at $400,Apple will never be able to keep up with production
oh it's coming my friends, just what iteration, is the only question:cool:

Ha! We'll see, give them a week or two and I'll admit I was wrong as soon as Bloomberg, WSJ and co. do the same. :) If it's really not coming, we'll hear just that from similar sources very soon.

Marty, I'm sorry, but the only power source capable of generating 1.21 gigawatts of electricity is a bolt of lightning.
