While I don't think it looks bad I'm sure over time they will improve it. That said, the alternatives you've provided are much worse in my opinion.

the iPad screenshot shows it even more. Basically going to look like that on a non "retina" screen. low resolution with text over a pattern like that is not going to look great..

I'm willing to bet the textured look is to show off the retina display also.

I can agree on that. Its not only the textured look though. It is the inappropriate use of contrast behind letters, the tiny letters for the notification that there is no option to change size and the "cheap" use of gradient on the original texture.

By saying cheap, I mean that they didn't spend any time at all to make the little lines of the texture a bit smoother after applying a gradient overlay on top of the layer. That made the little lines even more prominent and gave the whole image a "dirty" look.

And to be honest the beauty of the retina displays is being seeing everywhere else, on the glorious background wallpapers, on the graphics on the games, on the photos, everywhere.. Why do we have to get reminded of the retina display on a place that is supposed to be purely functional?

^Honestly on my iPhone 4, I see no issue at all with it. It all looks very sharp and extremely easy to read. I guess they just want to go with consistency across different areas of the OS with that texture.

Sorry, but i see absolutely no point in all those "organic"-ui-"enhancemets!

We are taking about mobile devices here so if one is not into showing of how much greater his display is compared to the guy next to him this brings zero value for the user, but makes text harder to read. I realy wished they would care more about usability then flashy looks.

I've only seen it on an iPhone 4 owned by a friend, and it seems to look much better in the flesh compared to screenshots.

i think it looks really cool - esp the contrast of the weather widget against fabric

still looks pretty stupid on the iPad, especially in contrast to the (more dominant, not covered entirely) homescreen wallpaper.

on folders, the fabric is sort of 'underneath' the UI, ... the springboard actually tears up.
on the iPhone you have a canvas covering the entire Screen, like a window shade.

on the iPad you have this weirdly sized, weirdly placed patch of fabric.

but i suppose we'll get used to it. I don't expect we'll be able to change the 'theme' of the notification panel, ... maybe something more abstract, more modern, for the iPad

I could definitely imagine. I reckon notification popups at the top of the screen look pretty stupid as well just because it doesn't cover the whole top width.

that actually looks pretty okay.
it's the drawer, mostly. ;)

It's not terrible, but it's certainly not a triumph.

Phazer

yeah, that's kinda the whole issue.
It's not terrible. But we're sort of spoiled with Apple usually being top notch in GUI design. Especially on the iPad, the Notification drawer looks uninspired and rushed :/

Jeez people! This is the 2nd beta. Until the functionality and layout is nailed down the graphic designers will then come in and polish things up.

Why are you people expecting a 100% bug free polished OS in the 2nd beta? Bring it down a few notches and focus on functionality.

noone's 'expecting' anything

this is a forum. for discussion. welcome.

besides, we're talking about Apple products. Apple themselves do not hide the fact that they're as much about design as they are about functionality, which many do appreciate.

Many people like this background because they find it visually appealing. However, the purpose of a phone is communication and anything that reduces contrast, like superfluous texture in the background, actually make it harder to read. Why take an expensive screen and handicap it with unnecessary decoration?

i don't think it's specifically the texture, that's appealing, per se

to me, it's the illusion of a very basic, very 'analog' foundation underneath that shiny, polished OS.
you open up a folder, the OS opens up to display what's underneath
there's quite obviously 3 layers
the icons > the wallpaper > the fabric folder background
they each cast drop shadows onto the layer beyond.

I like the fabric. What I don't like is how you access it! In some games I accidentally made it come down.

they do need to do a little more tweaking, for sure.
it happens far too often that, when trying to drag down the notification drawer from within the messages app, i scroll all the way to the top of my message history

the notification drawer casts a proper shadow onto the entire screen aswell. Still, i'm not sure it should use the same background texture as the folders

I've hated that horrible texture since it's inception. It does look amateurish. It looks like it was made by someone brand new to Photoshop filters. Even from a distance it looks like crap.

I have hoped that Apple would follow Teehanlax's design for about two years. And when Apple finally does revamp notifications in almost the exact same way, it ruins it with that stupid texture. Ugh. As a designer, it pains me to look at it. Teehanlax's design is far superior still, two or three years later.

I guess i'm one of the few people who actually don't mind the linen background of the Notification Center. I think it's clean and tidy, and does't have a bunch of extra fluffy crap. It's less boring that plain black, but not as distracting as if you had your own background picture on there.
I think it goes hand in hand with the changes in OS X Lion and iTunes 10.5 where they did away with the colorful list items (Finder) and just switched to plain gray.

20 years of experience tells me this is unlikely.

What was the last piece of Apple software that got a major graphical change between a 2nd beta and the shipping version?

From what I can tell Apple tends to start with the design half of the job and does the engineering stuff second.

The fact that this has been in iOS since folders leads me to believe that they're not going to come in and change it. They may change the look of the UI elements, and the way the drawer looks, but they're not changing that texture.
