I cringed when it happened because I knew the haters would jump all over this. Clearly Face ID doesn't fail that often, or Apple wouldn't ship it. Craig was just unlucky on stage.

It didn't fail though. The passcode needed to be used in order to have the ability to use FaceID. Just like how it is now with TouchID.

Still wondering about situations like wearing sunglasses... I think it will be cumbersome to remove your sunglasses to unlock your phone. May not seem like a big deal, but spend all day outdoors and have to remember to do that.

Second, I unlock my phone with Touch ID well before I even look at it currently. Now I will need to tap, look and swipe to unlock. Seems like a major step back in simplicity (which is a cornerstone for Apple)

That goes for Apple Pay too... currently you take the phone out of pocket, finger on home button and autenticate purchase. Now I will need to double click sleep button, scan face, then point to POS terminal?

Major step backwards in my opinion. I think when everyone has the phone in real world situations, they'll feel the awkwardness.

For this reason, I think I'll go to the iPhone 8 and wait for the iPhone X to evolve a couple of generations.

Don't you have to take the gloves out to use TouchID too?

This is actually a good reason not to use Touch ID, also.

They could touch your finger to the phone just as easily, could they not?

I'm sure I read somewhere in a discussion on this, that - in the U.S. at least - the police can't force you to divulge a password, but there's no issue with compelling you to unlock your phone with Touch ID. Depending on where you live, who you are (and your level of paranoia too, perhaps) - a good reason not to use either touch or face ID.

I do think it's funny though, how quickly Apple are knocking touch ID now that face ID is here..

1) It looks like it needed the initial passcode first. Oops.
2) Animoji's are cute but c'mon, spent a little too long there
3) Most people watching this hate the obligatory violent gaming segment
4) More AR/VR Dinosaurs!

Most likely, rise to wake was on, and every time it wakes, it tried to recognize the stage crew's faces, causing it to lock up after too many failed attempts. Craig wasn't there for a final unlock. Is the demo crew's fault for not making sure the final routine is set.

Wow, never heard the word "chagrin." Now I know.

Anyway, I hope this is fixed without requiring a hardware update. Would be a shame if the ultimate iPhone were a dud.

This is TOTALLY far reaching, but I'm just going to throw it out there. What if this was a stunt to show the security of the feature, as well as to show how others can get in to your phone by using an alternative passcode?

I highly doubt that's the case given some of his reaction, but to play devil's advocate..

I think it is not good to criticize without any reason ... the phone was rebooted due to projection connections ... and it was meant to be used by Craig Federighi ONLY ... he has his Face ID embalmed in it... but first time wake from reboot or restart require a pass code injection ...

he did showed face ID unlock feature many time ... and it worked flawless...

Pay $1,000+ for this.... why? Literally, what does it do that actually makes life any better? And I say this from a very clear standpoint of being able to. Still have my 64GB 6S, selling it and re buying the 128GB 6S, for ~$75 total. Kind of sad but it has become a fool's game in recent years. That is just one opinion though of course I am sure others differ, but also sure some others agree.

Touch ID was pretty bad when it first came out on the 5S. It's great on my iPhone 6, though.

No I don't always pick it up. And my notifications are kept private such that the phone has to be unlocked to see them. Yes I know I received a message, but I don't want the contents visible by anyone but me. Often, in meetings, i don't want to be so obvious as to pick up my phone to use it, such as to cause a distraction. I'll sort of casually glance at it while keeping my focus on the speaker. i'll even reply without lifting it from the table. So no. Apple either has to ensure it works the same way or force its customers to change the way they currently sue the phone.

Okay so you need to be able to check notifications/messages, open up the messages, and reply with one finger with the phone laying on a table at an approximate distance that you wouldn't be able to make eye contact with the sensor, but that your arm would still be able to reach, use touch id, push to open up, go to messages, and type your message with one hand. Got it. Well I actually think tapping and looking at your phone will unlock in this scenario, you just might very well not be able to use the phone in this exact scenario. I guess sticking to an older generation with touch ID on the front of the phone is your only option (android phones have it on the back so they wouldn't work).

Face Recognition is a solution to a NON-EXISTENT problem....if your phone is stolen...facial Recognition is not going to bring it back to you.....but when it fails...you will be cursing Apple....no thanks...just one more hair brained idea to fail.

One could say, and no doubt thousands had, about the first iPhone having a non-mechanical keyboard. A massive fail in the eyes of many.

There have been many other changes as well that people don't even think about today.

The most overlooked issue that everyone has missed.
They should be using the sound of the million dollar man / woman TV show from years ago when u face unlock your phone... this to match the new “Bionic” chip...
;)

There is no failure he just take the wrong demo phone first. When he realize change with the right one. Just watch the video again.

The stock also fell pretty sharply after the iPhone X announcement.

Great, buy some stock. When iPhone sales skyrocket purchase iPhone X with dividend.

They should not have removed Touch ID, Look how slow face id was to unlock the phone even when it finally worked

Face ID unlocks but does not open home screen. The swipe up adds fraction of a second. Touch ID can unlock and view home screen with a press.

IF that is the case, then Face ID is point. You wont be able to carry your phone on public transport, for example, without it trying to unlock with everyone's faces - only to lock you out and force you back onto a passcode. You may as just use a passcode all the time. Touch ID works.

It appears that merely showing a locked iPhone X to multiple people can be interpreted as login attempts. Not certain how this was circumvented in the hands-one presentation. Perhaps visitors were primarily handling unlocked iPhones.

Ok, let's quote Apple on this, it's not Face ID, it's Touch ID, but it'll do.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204587

When you fail to authenticate with your Touch ID [and in this case with your Face ID] multiple times the message is: "Your passcode is required to enable Touch ID" - This one is the winner

Solved.

People on MR today:

"Face ID sucks, no way I'm buying this, too expensive, won't work with sunglasses" etc. etc.

People on MR on 27th October:

"Apple can't deliver my iPhone X fast enough, damn you Tim Cook" etc. etc.

So in your opinion has Apple ever had a massive fail with the iPhone? How about a minor fail?
