I love all these douches are like "Maybe you shouldn't have upgraded to 3.0!" I'm sure they say that while sucking on their nerdy little fingers with a dick up their a$$.

It was a developer software... that was the point. Apple should have a policy allowing people to just switch back. After experimenting with 3.0, I decided to switch back. I didn't enjoy the consistent locking-up, having no sound, not being able to access my iPod.

Cheers to all you who also like to experiment and develop apps.

When it asks you if you want to restore from a backup choose a backup that was done before 3.0 was installed.

You can also control-click on the iPhone in the sidebar and click on restore from backup.

"The backup cannot be restored to this iphone because the software on the iPhone is too old." <--- I have this MSG and I don't know what to do ;/ ;/

Use Time Machine to go back to before you updated to 3.0 and grab that backup.

Mine said the same. Although I was able to find an older backup in the dropdown box. You may have one that you can use.

+1

I was able to successfully load the 3.0 update on the IPOD Touch 2nd Gen. So I tried it on my iphone 3G. Well need less to say it didn't work. So i tired a lot of steps to get the phone back to 2.2.1 but was unsuccessful. I went to the apple store made up a story about how my apt complex had a electricity go out while I was do a restore on my phone.

The Genius Bar rep tried several time and then swaped my iphone and I'm up and running.

hope this helps!

I'm back to 2.2.1. However, is anybody else having issues activating? I'm on At&T.

Also, iTunes tells me there is a baseband update. Should I update? Or is that coming from the old 3.0?

The iPod touch is a lot different than the iPhone. The iPod doesn't need to be "Activated" and it has no baseband to screw up. You shouldn't just assume that upgrading to developer software on an iPod touch is the same as upgrading the iPhone 3G. You should do more research sometimes. Also, now there's people who have successfully downgraded from 3.0 to 2.2.1 but, the iPhone still has the 3.0 baseband (which can't be downgraded) and now they're having trouble getting data to work correctly or at all. This is why Apple said you can't downgrade after upgrading to 3.0. It's like this on almost all updates to the iPhone... it is harder to downgrade than it is to upgrade simply because of the baseband version.

Well my data issues have been resolved. It went a little something like this:

My phone just quit receiving cellular signal. First it was the data dropping sporatically. Then data was completely non-existent even though I could still make calls. Then my cellular connection start to fail. In the end there was no service at all. After a restore and several hard resets the most I could get was the five little dots where the bars should be.

Took it to Apple hoping they WOULDN'T give me a replacement because I had my BSE shield installed. Sure enough, genius said she was going to replace it. I asked if she was sure there was nothing that could be done. She put my SIM in her phone to make sure it was the phone and not the SIM malfunctioning. So now I have my 3G in it's box with the plastic on it til I get the new BSE in the mail.

Moral of the story: if your phone was jacked by the new baseband, Apple will replace it.

Cue the self righteous whiners bashing me cuz I shouldn't have upgraded and I'm cheating Apple and all iPhone customers who have legitimate issues.

After doing a little research, I would assume that my phone that is now back 2.2.1 still has the 3.0 baseband, which is not allowing me to activate.

I found on livecrunch.com a member by the name of Danny posted this:

"For all of those with carrier issues, if you don’t know why that’s happening its because 3.0 updated your baseband, which you cannot change, at least I thought so. I’m posting a link from my iDisk for a custom restore that i created with pwnage tool, this ipsw does not include cydia, or installer, and does not activate your phone, but from what I’ve heard, it is possible to get your baseband down using a custom restore. Try it out and let me know if it works for you or not as I had no need to actually test it myself.
For all of you with a PC please attempt “J’s” method above, for some reason it’s a lot easier to do the whole restore on a PC than a Mac. Anyway, good luck to you all."
Download Link for Danny's ipsw

Other users on the forum: Here Seem to have had success to downgrade the baseband.

So there is hope, especially for those who live a few hours from a Mac "Genius". I'm about to try it right now. I'll let you know if I have any success.

I agree with you. if you have iphone and ipod touch both, you can try. this is my case. I have tested it with my second Gen. ipod touch. actually, I can easily downgrade to 2.2.1 for ipod touch. as you said, it doesn't need to activate something for contractor. so whenever I want, I can restore it. that's why I don't try 3.0 to my iphone. I don't want to take a risk. it's everyday business so it must be working every moment. anyway, new 3.0 software is impressive. I can't wait for official firmware.

Just wanted to confirm that using quickpwn in Windows does work.

I used XP running on VM Fusion, closed out iTunes helper on both OS X and Windows, ran quickpwn and followed directions on the screen, done. I didn't install cydia or any options using quickpwn. I used official 2.2.1 ipsw in quickpwn, not back into OS X and redoing firmware install with official 2.2.1 ipsw.

Just for the record, only reason why i went back to 2.2.1 is because I'll be going on a road trip this week, and 3.0 has issues with the iPod App, and I NEED my music. Other than that, I'm already missing the cut and paste functionality as well as the widescreen keyboard. Will be going back to 3.0 when I get back.

Can ANYONE confirm the activation with carrier / baseband compatibility?

AT&T does not want to activate the phone (3G) once the firmware is downgraded.

iPhone works, but NO cell service..

Some people say that theirs works? Is it because they have touches? 2g iPhones? other carriers besides AT&T?

I am a dev, 3.0 works for me AND is activated and registered with the dev program.

but 2.2.1 and 2.2 will not activate with AT&T once the phone is downgraded using quickpwn. Everything else works perfectly in the downgraded firmware.

It's because you used Quickpwn to activate the phone. Quickpwn fakes the activation (this is only to be used for carriers other than ATT). That is why you don't have service.

Again I said this earlier, use iTunes to restore the phone. You should get error 1013. This is a GOOD error. Now open quickpwn. All you need to do is open it, THAT IS IT! DO NOT GO THROUGH THE PROCESS AND JAILBREAK.

Now after opening quickpwn, open up iTunes. Your phone should now activate normally.

Now that the phone is activated you can jailbreak if you want.

Awesome!!

You knew EXACTLY what I was doing wrong!!

I kept going through the process and jailbreaking it!!

All you need to do is reset the phone so Quickpwn SEES the phone on the first screen and then BAM! open up iTunes and its good to go!!

Thanks a bunch man!!

it was very easy to do,thanks and it is good to be back as the grass was not greener on that side!

Restore to 2.2.1 successfully on a Mac

I successfully restored my iPhone from 3.0 Beta to 2.2.1 but now everytime I restart my phone goes into Recovery Mode. I have to then use iRecovery (on mac) so that it boots up normally again.
Is there anyway to fix that ?

Thanks for the reply

Stephan

I ended up going back to 3.0.

The new baseband and 2.2.1 together are extremely unreliable. Not only does the data connection keep dropping but the reception also sucks.

Obviously the two were never made to work together.

BTW, Youtube works now. To get it to work you need to do the following:

restore with 2.2.1
restore your settings
update to 3.0
