Help

I figured it out!

Rename the "iPod touch App Pack 4A93.ipa" to nikita.zip and download iPhoneDrive. Then launch iPhoneDrive and make sure you're using Advanced Mode and make a new folder called "Nikita" on your iPod. Then copy the "nikita.zip" file into that folder and restart your iPod touch.

Do I make a folder on iPhoneDrive called nikita and then copy to iPod?

Wonder if the restore file is the same for older ipod touches then from the new ones that come with it already pre-installed... if they're different, couldn't you just restore yours with that one and have them there? (assuming you're fine with 1.1.3 unjailbreaked)

That is possible but since the new ipods arrant shipping just yet, or are not in stores yet. We will have to wait and find out. Because if you think about it, that would mean the the files would not have a registered name in it, they would be blank.

So, has this worked yet? With all the discussion, I'm guessing no.

So, basically, what we need is the files off of a brand new iPod, then we can distribute them safely? Do the new apps come preinstalled on new iPods? If so, Im about to become even more ticked...

From what i understand from the keynote is that all new ipods will ship with the apps on them, and yeah the package may beable to be used off a new one but since no one has one we have yet to see that.

Yes. They come standard on all new ipod touches. $20 for people who bought touches early. stupid, i know.

As for downgrading, I've read that you can't with the new firmware, it gives a "Download error"...or something like that. It seems Apple doesn't want us to take a peek and jump back to 112 if we don't like it.

That idea of not being able to downgrade was given in the last version. Once we are able to access the file structure we can modify the version id to 1.1.1 and restore to that fw version.

well if we restore are ipod wont it go back to 1.1.2 if thats what you had previously installed?

Angrier by the second...

Well, if this is how Apple Inc are going to treat early adopters, we just won't by the products when they're first released, we'll just wait until all the updates become available before purchasing.

COME ON APPLE, release it for free its stupid. $24.99 in Australia for a 20KB file which just edits a few lines in a text file. $20.00 in the U.S and $00.00 for people who bought it today (16th Jan 2008) or on the 15th.

I am extremely disappointed with Apple, i thought that they were NOT like Microsoft. The iPhone Update is FREE and it adds the same features to ALL iPhones purchased wither when it came out or just recently. And the iPod Touch is practically the same device, thinner, new faceplate and slightly changed OS.

If anyone could decrypt this file, allow us to put in OUR OWN iTunes Info and post it. I and hundreds of thousands of Apple Fans around the globe will be grateful. Pleeeeeeaaaaaaasssssseeeee Hackers, you can accomplish this.

Oh and Hackers - While you're at it, make the file as NOT REQUIRING JAILBREAK.

Thankyou!!!

Cheers

going through the content of the file once it is converted to a zip it seems that the only file that contains user data is nikita_receipt.plist.sinf all of the other files have a creation date of january 12th while this file has a creation date at the time of download and contains your name in plain text

Well, I'm fine paying for these updates. I think all we get is worth the money. (and I hate to use this argument, but it is an iPod and doesn't really need those PDA features. You bought it when it didn't have those features and you were happy then) the only thing I'm worried about, is if we buy the update now, will apple make iPod touch users buy every update afterwards that iPhone users get for free?

I would take the plundge and buy the update just to help the community but I dont know if paying £12.99 for the update justifys the apps and then I would be concerned about handing over the file if the file contained personal info

IMO this isn't hacking, it's piracy. Dress it up how you want but you're trying to get apps that Apple have put a price on for nothing. How is this any different from torrenting CS3?
if you want the apps, buy them. If you don't, don't. If you want to pirate them, don't dress it up as hacking because it ain't. I'm sure there will be plenty of people complaining that apple have screwed them for being early adopters. That may be true or it may not be, but either way it isn't justification for piracy.

I'm not trying to pirate. I'm just trying to figure out a way to make it so that I can make sure I'll have these Apps in the future if I restore my iPod. I need a way that I can back up these files and KNOW that they're safe for good.

and please show the justification of apple charging excisting ipod touch users for the 5 apps when they are giving the new buyers (when 1.1.3 touch's are out) the apps as part of the touch firmware no extra charge?

Well, doesn't the touch REQUIRE that you activate it with iTunes before you use it out of the box? So it's entirely possible that iTunes is now generating the "unlock" file for the apps during the activation process and then applying that the 1.1.3 firmware on the device. That would mean that the firmware shipping on the touch is the same as the firmware you download and it wouldn't help with this at all.

Come to think of it, the fact that you have to activate the touch when you unbox it sort of hints that Apple planned this from the start, or at least wanted to keep the option open to them.

With respect, that's completely irrelevant from a piracy point of view. When I got my MacBook Pro, it came with Tiger. Then Apple released Leopard which included extra programs such as Spaces and Time Machine and included it on all new MacBook Pros for no extra cost. Should I have expected Apple to give me free versions of these? Or should I have used it as a justification to pirate Leopard? No and No. This is no different if you step back and think about it rationally. Apple never promised these apps so they've not reneged on any agreements. They may have made a PR cock up and annoyed a lot of users (I'm not arguing with that), but that doesn't mean it's justified to pirate the apps.
When Adobe released CS3 they made the UK price more in pounds than the US price in dollars (which made it more than twice as much in the UK as the US). Was I annoyed? You bet I was. Did I feel ripped off? Yep again. Did I pirate it or use this as justification for piracy? No, I just didn't buy it
If you feel that strongly that Apple have screwed you, vote with your wallet and don't pay the $20. I just feel that if you want to claim the moral high ground then you shouldn't resort to piracy.

Apple doesn't lose anything if you do not buy the update... however, the user will miss out on the niceness of these Apps if they wish to not buy it. Also, Apple cannot lose either way... they either get a free $20 or they don't... whoopdy doo.

The user is going to always lose... so therefore "protesting by not buying the software" won't do a single thing.

I was looking at this in the retrospec that if i buy the apps i should be able to use them on the devices i own. So therfore i would want to be able to put say it on two ipod touches, if i legally own two of them.
