Really...? Dr. Dre is being compared to Steve Jobs?

This is one of the funniest 'news' posts ever on MR, thanks to WSJ.

and excel at making certain types of music sound great. And yes, they're marketed almost as well as Apple's products.

But they don't. They are no types of music that wouldn't sound better on less expensive headphones. They sell because of their looks. That is it. They are jewelry, not an audio product.

I wonder why Beat got so much attention...when Dr. Dre is deaf producer....how does he know the products sound good?

Well that's subjective. Looks are subjective.... To a much greater degree, frequency and phase response are NOT. Neither is quality.

If you just want to 'look' good, why are you buying headphones? Get a grill dawg. That's what the real playaz do.

Looks are 100% subjective to left brain unimaginative morons.

You want to argue that your finger painting project you made in the first grade is better than Da Vincis Mona Lisa?

Your last statement is the dumbest thing I've heard uttered from a human beings mouth. You slipped through the cracks of natural selection, please don't reproduce. kthxbye

No, because Dre is a rapper and Jobs was a brilliant software and hardware developer.

Actually, I don't know much about Dre, I'm sure he's done a lot of awesome stuff in his lifetime--I just don't see this as a racism issue which you seem to be trying to make it.

Steve jobs designed software and hardware??

ROFLOL!!

You missed the sarcasm then. Beats are jewelry. That is all.

I think maybe you do not know what subjective means.

This is the silliest thing I have read in months. I actually JUST registered to post how much I laughed when I read this article's title.

  • Any person that has ever listened to Dr. Dre's Beats headphones knows that they were not designed by a perfectionist.
  • Anybody that has ever owned Beat's headphones knows that they fall apart after a month. They also know that Beat's were not designed by a perfectionist.

Who really buys into this bologna?
Silly? Well lets see.... when was the last time you were offered 3 billion for a project u co owned ?
Maybe the silliest of all are those who cant swallow the fact that Dre and Iovine are successful way way beyond the average joe who calls the idea of the headline.. Silly!

Dre and Iovine did something right beyond the average joe to be where they are right? Or you would have held their stature and been offered the 3 billion for your genius as well..!

Absolutely not. The product is 100% marketing; 0% quality. It has no goods behind it.

Anybody that has heard a pair of headphones that is worth $400 and then auditions Beat's knows this.

Here's the thing. Beats are designed and marketed to reach a consumer that likes bass heavy sound. Designed and Marketed. To Beats targeted market, they are the "got to have 'em" headphones. If that's what the people want, any smart business would be stupid not to give it to them.

People like what the like. Even if I gave a Beats fan my Senn cans that doesn't guarantee they will like mine better. They could easily say, "needs more bass".

Jewelry that happens to deliver high quality music to your ears.

Jewelry with good digital features is a great thing. Or is it better the have a piece of poop on your ears that can deliver music?

Nobody is comparing Beat's to apple headphones? Why would you compare a horrible sounding pair of $400 headphones to a horrible sounding pair of apple $30 ear buds?

I wasn't really comparing them.... You were saying Beats headphones were not designed by a perfectionist because they have poor quality audio and they fall apart easily. And I just thought it was funny because under Steve Jobs (who is a perfectionist) Apple created some of the worst earphones known to man. Just a bit of irony.

Steve did a major harm to apple by serving his ego! One of his biggest mistakes !

Actually Steve Jobs and his ego saved the company. His insistence in doing things his way reversed the mediocre trends of the company. It was only the media overhyping his illness that caused any downsides in the company value.

He’s such a perfectionist, how come Beat’s sound is excoriated as much as Bose is in the world of high-end portable listening forums at Headfi.org ?

Bose is about as overpriced and overrated as Beats are. The difference is, Beats acknowledges that they put out bass heavy headphones and people acknowledge that they pay a premium because they are "cool." Bose users, on the other hand, try to claim that they are enlightened audiophiles.

Why would you compare Beat's to Senns? Of course a Beat's customer doesn't want a neutral sound, and especially does not want an open back can.

I think offering a Beat's fan a pair of Denon D2000s would be more successful. They hit harder and have more control and texture in the lower frequencies than most of the sealed phones I've listened too. They also cost less than Beats.

He also, apparently, has no concept of good sound, because his headphones are horrible. Hardly better than the el cheap KOSS knockoffs you can get at Walgreens.

KOSS knockoffs? KOSS has been around decades longer than Beats.

If anything, Dr. Dre has used his business savvy to pull off the incredible: His Beats headphones are a perfect knockoff of KOSS headphones, at several times the price. And he's used his coolness factor to dupe people into buying them.

... perfectionist impulse, coupled with his disregard for artificial deadlines ...

Good man.

If you ship a product that sucks, on time, people will hate you forever.
If you ship a great product late, people will be mildly annoyed while they wait.
But they'll love you forever after.
Or something to that effect.

Go to a headphone meet. If you're interested in high quality music, i would be happy to share information with you to help you on your search for that.

If you're interested in jewelry, enjoy your Beats.

+1. That's one of the best Beats/Bose comparisons I've seen. If you don't mind, I'm going to borrow this in the future.

ROFLOL!!

He did design hardware and software.

He helped design the hardware layout in Breakout, Apple 1, Apple 2, Next Cube, and I'm sure countless of other undocumented instances.

He didn't engineer hardware and software, but he sure as hell helped design them. And in the rare scenarios when he did either of the two, it was brilliant work.
