This is silly...
They pretty much helped him with the production of the music / videos, etc. and he was a spokesperson when Apple Music was announced. His music and album was plastered in every playlist, chart, recommendation, radio and cramped into any possible corner of Apple Music...
Unfair & meaningless statistic IMO.
Helped him with the production of the music? Huh? This was executive produced by 40, just as all of Drake's albums have been. There are fewer collaborators on this album than pretty much any prior Drake album.

You think showing up awkwardly on stage at an Apple Keynote for 10 minutes gave him an unfair advantage to get one billion streams?

His music and album are in every playlist because the album sold 1.2M first week, has a #1 and #2 single, and is what the people want to hear.

Give credit where credit is due.

Is Beats 1 also streaming from Apple Music? That would explain this number...

Is the money being made from the sale of this product going to be parked in Ireland? Or will those photographed American citizens be bringing that money back to the United States and paying taxes?

Apple's share is probably being parked offshore. Cue and Cook get paid in stock so if Drake is making cash for Apple through subscriptions, the entire Apple organization is getting a cut. Drake and OVO Sound are Canadian so they're probably paying taxes to Ottawa.

Just as with every other company, e.g., Google, Facebook, etc., profits are taxed where they are earned. That's why Apple is the largest taxpayer in the United States, (and the world, but you just asked about the good old USA), because Tim and company are creating products that consumers can't get enough of, literally and figuratively;)

But the commenters here told me no one cares about Drake.

I don't know who to believe!

Believe me and listen to this:

Swish

The entire "Drake" phenomenon went over my head and I do follow
some new music.

As an old geezer music is no longer a big part of my life.

I like information, especially about retirement. LOL

...Not sure if serious...

He just misspelled "piece"

Lol at Tim Cook writing "Thanks." He should have finished his sentence, "Thanks for making us a boat load of money and rolling over and accepting our 1/10 of 1/100 percent cut!"

Yeah, I saw Drake at the supermarket bringing back cans for change, because he isn't getting paid.
Good on ya for looking out for those destitute & in need of you to fight so they can at least rub a few nickels together...

#getreal

I agree, this is Unfair!!! A billion isn't such a big number. It doesn't mean what it used to. Heck, that's only one stream for every phone Apple has sold. He will never get close to a trillion-- I guarantee it. I don't find it meaningful at all. People probably don't even like Drake, they only listen to him because Apple makes them, and Apple makes them stream his songs!!! This isn't fair at all!! Time for Tim to go; this reeks of desperation.

That's about four tweets' worth.

All legally required taxes will be paid in the countries concerned.

1,000,000,000 streams / 15,000,000 Apple music subscribers = an average of 67 streams per user over the course of 149 days since the release of Views. Yeah, right...

It depends on what qualifies as a "stream" of an album.

Views has 20 tracks on it and lasts 80 minutes. This only requires an average of 3.35 listens per track per user over 149 days, if each individual stream of a track from the album counts as a stream of the album.

Also, I know some people have been streaming tracks without actually listening. A few weeks ago some artist was asking for their fans to do millions of streams of one track. Several fans responded by streaming on loop with headphones plugged in overnight, but not actually having the headphones in. Thus you can rack up around 15 streams per hour while you sleep (assuming the average sound is 4 minutes long).

It's called smart business. Other artists should take note on how this was done and emulate.

Good, good. Keep working on it. If we all put our heads together, we can take this award apart and show it for the sham that it is. Here's my contribution: "I wonder how many people accidentally clicked on Drake the musician, when they really meant to listen to Drake University's fight song? Especially with that letterman's jacket that he likes to wear, a lot of people may have thought he was a college recruiter. That would explain this number"

Keep the thread going. Drake and Tim are going down!

The amount of salt in here over this is astounding.

Congrats on having the cheapest fans in the world (who won't buy your music but will stream it)?

Well it's because he's a rapper and you know how some people feel about rappers. I can feel the snark a mile away!
