Droid 2 is getting a R2-D2 edition. Finally a Star Wars reference. Too bad these aren't the droids I'm looking for.

They are too late. Most of people are locked in a contract with iPhones, evo, droid x .

Is the Droid 2 or the Droid X supposed to be a bigger hit? I had assumed Droid X was the Droid sequel, had not heard of 2 until today.

It depends. The Droid X is supposed to be Motorola's big screen competitor to phones like the EVO, and I'm assuming from the marketing, they're trying to make this phone a hit. From the current backorder time on Verizon's, it seems to be working. As for the Droid 2, I haven't seen a lot of marketing for it yet, but the goal here with this device would be to try and make the 1st generation Droid owners upgrade to the D2. Just my $0.02.

Who cares?

Really.. enjoy your iPhone and stop worrying about the sales figures of other phones...

Just because there aren't lines and it doesn't sell out the first day, doesn't mean that they aren't selling successfully.

The Droid X is a completely different model than the first gen Droid. They both reside in the Droid "series". The Original Droid has a slide out keyboard & 3.7" display. The Driod X has a touchscreen keyboard & 4.3" display. The Droid 2 is a second gen version of the original @ retains the very popular keyboard.

My opinion is, if Apple would have included a slim slide out keyboard on the iPhone they would have lured thousands of BlackBerry users, and surprised the mainstream with ease of use via fast input for lengthy emails & texts. Or... Apple could have done what every other smartphone maker does and offer more than one model. One with, and one without the slide out keyboard.

At times Apple's decisions baffle me. Why they would lock themselves into just one carrier for so long, for example. Or only offer one model of iPhone. I can hear the fanboy responses already... Like "to perfect one phone" and on and on. That's a stupid excuse, since Apple has all kinds of products it focuses on. Anyway, it's just my observation.

Umm, isn't this the iPhone forum? Who cares? If you go to the MacPro forum, there aren't a thousand posts about Dell towers...

basicly the anything sold generally opening weekend on products that have people line up it is not worth really considering that as a fair comparison...The others do not go for that type of blind fandom. It is not fair to use that as a line of judgment comparing to other phones.

yes, i'm sure those other companies would hate having millions line up at stores around the world waiting to buy their new product on release day. most companies i know of despise that kind of "blind fandom".

The Droid 2 is the sequal to the original droid phone, i.e., has a physical keyboard. Where as the Droid x is marketed as a premium or high end phone, given the large screen, gobs of memory and high performing cpu/gpu.

I haven't seen any numbers but from what I can gather, the droid x was a very popular phone, flying off the shelves and verizon dealing with product shortages.

Given that D2 just his the streets the other day, its a bit early to say if its selling well or not. Clearly its not generating the energy the original droid did or the droid x but that doesn't mean its a dud.

As for the blackberry, I cannot see how RIM could expect this puppy to be flying off the shelves. It would have been a great competitor back in 2008, but now in 2010, its seriously lacking. The screen itself is enough to scare most people away - low res, poor pixel density.

I still don't get the "interest"

If it's to feel superior - that's weak
If it's because it's that slow of a news day - still weak
And even if you're going to buy another phone - who cares. Buy whatever you want.

I wrote in another thread - the same people who are bragging/supporting/defending Apple's sales are also the same people that "conveniently" forget the same data when it comes to Mac/PC sales.

Yay - the iPhone kicks ass and has huge demand. It's dominating the market.. woohooo.

Yet (as said above) the same people ignore the same rules of engagement when you're talking about how many PCs sell on a daily basis versus Macs.

Instantly THAT can be written off with "yeah - but PCs suck" or something just as weak.

In other words - SOME people on here (and in this thread) will flip flop their reasoning and do whatever it takes to maintain that Apple is #1 at all costs.

Funnnnnny.

Android will be fine.

RIM, on the other hand.... it's kind of embarrassing to throw an event to announce the phone and the new OS and the response is "meh". I went to Crackberry to look at the "who's standing in line?" thread and many of the people there noted that there was no line lmao.

Once the apple fanboys/girls buy their product then you get what the real demand is. You have to strip out the fanboys and girls from apple first.

No, you don't. The Apple "fanboys/girls" are real people, who pay real money, and end up with real products in their hands. To me that constitutes real demand and directly contributes to Apple's bottom line, whether you like it or not.

I'm sure if "Fandroids" were lining up, and if RIM had any sort of rabid "fan" base to speak of, you wouldn't be discounting them.

Sounds a lot like the hooplah and ultimate non-event that was the Palm Pre.

However, in RIM's defense (and it's rare that I come to their defense), their bread and butter is still corporate customers. Those people don't stand in line. Instead, thy have their purchasing departments place orders through their carrier's business account rep. So, while the Torch maybe didn't make a splash on the consumer end, it's still likely to sell to those who have work phones, want something LIKE the iPhone, but whose IT departments have a lot invested in Blackberries and won't see it any other way.

On the other hand... more businesses ARE permitting iPhones....

Well I will be the first to say that..

I got rid of my iphone 4 and got the blackberry torch on launch yesterday :)

Go ahead and call me stupid everyone...but I love it so far!

Lol. No way! You're living in 2008 with that phone.

Not stupid. You are simply buying a phone that suits your needs better. I am quite happy with the iPhone 4 but I do suspect I may in the next few months buy something like the HTC Desire HD or the Samsung S Captivate, root it and then go from there. I am not crazy about the "walled garden" approach of Apple but the phone generally works well.

What drives me batty on these forums - thank heavens for the rational posters - are those that have their whole identities wrapped up in their phones and need to see undeviating worship of their devices and feel obliged to heap scorn on the perceived heretics.

Yep. The corporate customers are great but like you said iPhones are being permitted. I know, at my place of work [energy related/research company], all of the higher ups/executive directors have iPhones. Not only that but when we switched to an exchange server, people who had BBs were told they'd have to pay for BES to have real-life sync time access to it. A lot of people switched [including me].

Slowly, but surely, iPhone use has grown over the past year I've been here. I'm sure other companies are following suit.

Android and Apple may not have a dominant presence in the corporate world but it's growing.

BUT, you have to REMEMBER PCs are A LOT cheaper than Macs! You can get a PC for $300 brand new...the lowest you are paying for a Mac is around $1,000.

Correct. At my IT firm, all you see is iPhones. Computer geeks love iPhones.
