’87 and ’90 here (I assume the second year is grad school). Gig ‘em!

Actually I took a roundabout, untraditional route to get my BA. I started at A&M in '93 (as class of '97), left after a year to pursue other things and didn't end up making it back to A&M finish my BA until '05. I tell people '97 and '05 because of my age (I can't pass for someone in my mid-20's anymore), though I guess that doesn't matter online (habit).

I'm finishing my Masters at TCU in December and will probably start a PhD next year (don't know where, yet, in the process of applying now).

Gig 'em

Android just upped the ante

Sending emails and texts and activating navigation with a single button push (and dictating the content by talking) sounds really really handy.

When do you think the iphone will integrate such features? 2-3 years from now is my guess

Dragon dictation is free and works great for me.

Then again even with easy dictation I hardly use it. Without an ability to edit what you've said, dictation has it's limits for texting and serious emails

dude, are you illiterate? this is an "iPhone forum".....this thread does not belong.

Totally agree with you on this. Andoid peeps would say the same thing if one of us went on their forums, and started an iPhone 4 poll.

Sorry for the late reply. Was busy starting random car threads on Corvette forums. I'm sure they would love me talking about Kia Fortes and Honda Civics.

HEY WHILE WE ARE AT IT! Lets go to Scientology forums and talk about JESUS!

WHOS WITH ME?!?! I KNOW THE OP IS IN!

Its easy to marginalize a feature that isn't available on your favorite phone. As a matter of fact, Apple did the same thing in regards to copy and paste for years.

So, lets not be a sour-puss about iphone getting beat to the punch on voice control. I believe that it is only a matter of time before Apple incorporates its own version into iOS.

My question is when you think they'll get around to doing it.

Not the same. That's simple speech to text, without intelligence.

He's talking about the ability to tell your phone what to do, or ask it for information.

The Android "Edwin" app already does a lot of that. You can ask for the weather somewhere, or to a translate a phrase into another language, or to solve a math problem, or dictate a message, or speak the phone status... or even just say "Map the closest coffee shop" and it does so.

This will be one major future usage of our devices... as intelligent companions and aides.

Talking about Kias is quite different than discussing direct Corvette competitors, which would usually be seen as okay.

Moreover, most people tend to think of their favorite forums as family, and thus as a place to go to first for opinions.

I agree that people could try to stick to using just one or two threads for such things, though.

It's just as easy for you to marginalize my opinion because it disagrees with yours. If you like the voice control that Android offers, woo hoo! I could care less about it being on Apple's device, as I hardly use the voice control functions it already has.

I wasn't believing it at first, but this thread is proof positive (not even the op really but some of the responses), that some people who are unfortunate enough not to own an iPhone actually hang out and post here just to cause trouble.

Well if you read what he actually posted he mentioned the ability to dictate texts and emails... which is why I mentioned the Dragon dictation app is fine for that (Maybe it involved one more button press... damn).

Despite this so-called "intelligent" voice control, what it really boils down to with Android: the OS is laggy, the device quality is lacking, app quality is lacking, video recording/playback is sub-par, malware is becoming increasingly common, and you have to wait forever to receive the latest official updates for your specific device. There are pages/threads/videos describing all of these things. I'd like to go back to reading about the iPhone in this iPhone forum now. Thanks.

Don't forget about Chrome to Phone (also officially released today), which seems pretty cool, too. Here's hoping someone puts together a Safari extension for this ASAP.

Typical drone response. You do realize that anyone can buy an iPhone, don't you?

You need a better source of information. All of the problems you mention were issues with Android 1.6 era phones.

Having a preference is alright, but there's a fine line between preferring one OS and being a fanboy/ostrich with your head in the ground.

Your comment about updates is pretty telling. Apple puts out what, 2 a year, if that? iOS isn't growing at anywhere near the pace Android is in terms of features or agility.

You're making me really sick, fanboy. Please leave and take your comments with you.

Had a good laugh reading this thread...

I will be right back

*heading to a microsoft forum to start a thread to see who prefes a macbook over a macbook pro*

Those problems still exist on phones w/ 2.2. How about you let me know when a single android device sells more than the iPhone. And as for my updates comment, I was referring specifically to how it has taken months for android phones to receive the official 2.2 update, just as we start to hear about 3.0. Fragmentation buddy.

And at least I'm not poking my head in Android forums like some idiot who needs to justify their lame purchases.

I don't think very many people are "trying to justify their lame purchases". The Mac vs. PC war has become the iOS vs. Android war?

Android has become an excellent platform. It's progressing at an incredible rate (hardware/software), and the classic response that "the OS is laggy, the device quality is lacking, app quality is lacking, video recording/playback is sub-par, malware is becoming increasingly common, and you have to wait forever to receive the latest official updates for your specific device." is the equivalent of Android fanboys knocking Apple for having "a closed ecosystem, lacking flash, outdated phone after 6 months, yada yada yada...".

I honestly don't care what phone people have. Anyone who has an iPhone 4 could purchase an Android, as anyone who has an Android phone could have purchased an iPhone 4.

Phone warz is ridiculous.

People just need to try things out and find out what works best for their mobile lifestyle. For the life of me I don't know why iPhone users keep on bring up Android on this iPhone forum. The Android forums I've been to never bring up iOS vs. Android, it's always Android vs. Android. Why can't we here just focus on iOS and bring the Android topics to the Industry discussion forum?
