my 3GS contract is up next year

if AT&T has a nice Android phone like the Droid Incredible i'll probably check it out instead of the iphone 5.

at this point 90% of the functionality and the hardware is identical between the platforms. and i even tell people this if they ask me which phone to get.
Why? Hardware/ software is quite a bit different.

in both cases the CPU's are ARM based
the software is ^nix

90% of the most popular apps are on both platforms and some cool features on some apps like offline caching for slacker radio seem to be appearing on Android first.

so far the big difference is games are better on iOS and the nice games that are 300MB in size are on iOS

Android wins for people that want to customize their phones and widgets

It's the iPhone's closest competition.

So what? I own an Android phone and guess which site I use when I want to read up on what's happening with it? Come on, guess. Did you guess "Not the MAC site"? You should have. Now try to guess which site I use for reading up on my Blackberry 8800. How about my Fuze with Windows Mobile? Again, I bet you're thinking "Not this site" for both of those phones, right? You should be. I have several other types, perhaps I should set up polls and start threads for every single model of phone I own on every single site I visit for those various models. Wouldn't that be a douchebag move? What's the difference? I hardly think it's the fault of iPhone owners that you're too emotionally attached to this site for god knows what reason that you can't go find an appropriate site.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

If I was going to forsake my iPhone-4 for an Android, I would force myself to wait a few months for their screen technology to catch up. A 4.3" screen is great, but I'm hooked on 300+ ppi.

The Samsung Captivate is supposed to be a really good Android phone.

However, for a phone that is marketed as a fantastic media device. It's harder to get music and video onto it. That's one thing that needs to change with Android I'm afraid.

While some might want to have an iTunes-like interface for moving music between their computer and their phone, I actually find the concept of dragging files to "Music" or "Video" folder on the mounted EVO SD card to be as simple as it gets. To each his own, though.

Did you guess "Not the MAC site"?

I use my EVO in concert with my Macs, shouldn't I be allowed to talk about the interaction between those devices on MacRumors?

Here we go again

This is an iPhone forum. Doesn't matter whether it is iPhone's close competitor or what ever the argument may be. It's not an iPhone, is it?

I'm clicking other as in my iPhone.

[/end rant]

Sure, go discuss it in the section that fits your Mac. I don't care how much anyone wants to pretend this thread has "noble purpose", it was was started for the sole purpose of stirring s**t. Period.

So tired of this crap.

Man, you said it.

It is quite amazing that many topics, be they having silly subjects ("what is the best case for my phone") or are completely off-topic, end up very often getting masses of views and replies. This is as opposed to many of those which are very much on-topic but have no interest to most.

hahaha.. Try going to android forums and make a thread just like this but instead of android it's iPhone thread. Let's see if you get different response or same treatment you got from here. LoL! :D

This thread has gone amazingly well. Then again, it baffles the mind on why we need a droid general discussion thread on an iPhone forum.

I find it very civil and respectful. Several mentioning the iPhone. None of this ***** like "If you don't like it, return it!"..." "Why bother posting here if you are a hater!!"....paraphrased, but you get the point.

There are some snide remarks but the majority of people there chose an alternative without spite.

That saying, I do feel this thread would be better off in the Community Discussion or the Apple, Industry and Internet Discussion boards. :D

Looking at your signature, you have an eclectic collection of devices. You would thus be open to all of this :)

Why are there SO many people here getting their panties in a bunch over a damn topic? It's been said before and i'll say it again - IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE THREAD DON'T POST... Hell, don't even CLICK on it. It seems like all of you iFans are getting intimidated by how fast Android is progressing and need to vent to justify your purchase.

Now, to the topic. I've owned a Nexus one in the past and have personally fiddled with the Incredible, and the Droid X. A couple buddies own the original Droid and i highly hate the form factor of it -- seeing as how the Droid 2 is basically the same, I can't see myself every finding that phone appealing. The Droid X is large -- too large for my tastes... The incredible, with HTC Sense, is too laggy. Nice looking phone, but just too darn laggy. To this day I still believe my Nexus offered the best experience on an Android phone simply for the fact that there were so many custom ROMS you could choose from -- all optimized. It's a damn shame my iPhone stinks when it comes to that part. Stupid work, wouldn't let me get an Android!

I can foresee Gingerbread raising the bar again -- this time when it comes to UI. It's nice to see Google listen to their users and implement features within months, rather than years like Apple. It really IS like comparing Apples and oranges... Nothing alike, and looking good for google.

Perhaps, but iOS needs better manual methods as well. I find iTunes frustratingly slow at times.

I just spent hours waiting while iTunes "backed up" during an upgrade to 4.0. (This device only had about 2G used.)

Then when my pictures turned out all fuzzy because of the 4.0 photo sync bug, I had to do it again.

Later, I unchecked two small videos in iTunes and added some photos, and it took another hour to "sync".

I'd much rather have simply dragged a few photos onto the device and done a quickie manual delete from an iOS directory. Bingo, I'd be done in seconds instead of hours.

Or maybe I just don't know how to more quickly add and delete photos via iTunes? (I do know about dragging video onto the phone.)

I'm all for discussing Droid as it compares to iPhone, but this thread was for "Droid General Discussion". I may as well make a thread about my car.

There are comparisons in this thread to the iPhone.

Your car statement was just dumb. Fail.

+1. iTunes is everything that is evil about my PC.

do you not even get the point of all this? here, let me bust out the crayons and color it out for you....

1. this is an IPHONE FORUM (Arn of MacRumors created this forum specifically for people to discuss.....wait for it.....the IPHONE)

2. if you want to discuss the iPhone as compaired to other phones, such as android phones, then do so. However, to create a thread SPECIFICALLY geared toward people to "discuss generally", the Andoid platform by itself, is well, dumb. Go to an Android forum. I'm sure there is a guy, just like Arn, who created a "General Discussion" or "Android Forum" for you to hold your discussions

I'm still baffled why you want to even discuss Android phones on an iPhone forum. really, i'm baffled......

I'm with him...this thread is needless. How many Droid owners visit here except to troll? I could give a rat's ass about Droid or Droid 100.

Note how you said YOU could give a rat's ass about Droid... Solution is simple, don't read and respond.
